MRSCHRIS56, glad you survived Cancer. I have had several friends from high school days die from Cancer the past few months and they were about 63. Mike, Gary, Steve, Kaye, Brenda, and Sheila. They make me appreciate each day I still have to live.

Thanks for asking RRayner - what a difference SP makes! I've just posted a blog on my first year with SP, entitled "My best year". That about sums up how I feel now at 62. A complete turnaround!

I recently joined Sparkpeople when I began to seriously feel "OLD". I'm only 61, but was literally dragging myself around. It's only been about 7 weeks, and I'm already feeling more energetic. It suddenly struck me this week that lately, I've been thinking and planning very seriously for my retirement, but all of my energies and efforts over the last several decades have been focused on my career, and I've been neglecting taking care of myself. Now I realize that my "career life" will only continue for another 5 or 6 years, but the rest of my life will hopefully go on much longer than that. I want to enjoy those retirement years to the best of my potential, so it's time to put my energy where it most matters, and that's living a more active, healthy life. I don't know if that's wisdom or not, but I'm glad I have finally gotten to this point. Don't know why it took so long. Duh!

I think with age you get wisdom. I am 60 and it is so nice now that the things that used to bother me in my younger days no longer do. Life is too short to be stressed. We all should stop and smell the roses.

This made me start thinking about it all also. I knew I was overweight and started weight watchers at 41 but I did not make life style changes - I was just accountable for what I ate. So, I would skip lunch to have a snickers bar or some other idiotic idea. At 42 I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and that is when I really started looking at my body differently. I did well and got to a healthy weight when I was diagnosed with achilles tendonitis which led to a tear which led to inactivity and more weight gain. This time, for me, it is really about self-awareness. I am still struggling and the weight is not coming off but I do feel as though I understand the tools better and am just spending a little more time preparing so that ultimately it is a life style change.

Be still and know that I am God.

I think young people think they are invincible. I know I did until age 34 I was diagnosed with cancer.

Since that time, I've been more aware of my health and taken a stand to keep myself healthy. It's very hard when we have busy schedules and sometimes I mess up.

That's why I'm here!emoticon

Out of my comfort zone.

I'm wondering how many of us make self-care a higher priority now than when we were younger. I'm finding that as I age I know more about my needs and limits AND am more respectful of them. A side effect of this, however, is that taking care of my body takes more time, money, and diligence.

I know that if I don't maintain balance, if I'm not responsible in any self care area, there's a price to pay....literally....and it's usually painful!!
