Yes, we had a store called the TOY CHEST, and they sold all kinds of penny candy. I too remember Mary Janes and squirrel nut zippers. Also, bulls eyes and mint juleps. The mint juleps you could get 3 for a penny. Oh, those were the days!

Maybe I was candy-deprived, but I don't remember a lot of the candy y'all have mentioned. I loved Tootsie Roll Pops, but maybe they came later? I do remember wide, stripped pieces of coconut candy that were sooo good. Anyone know what they were called?

dots - it was a long piece of paper with little balls of hard candy and you had to bite them off. I bet I ate some of the paper as well. Also the candy lipstick was a girls best friend if you were preteen.

Mary Janes--I actually preferred to taste of bit-o-honeys but they were kind of miserable to chew before you got your adult teeth, and much harder to suck off your teeth. They cost more than a penny, but I also loved frozen snicker bars--even harder on the loose baby teeth.

Gummy bears . . . I remember serving up seven for a penny behind my Uncle's candy counter at the comic and used book store. Afterwards, I graduated to the nickle fudgicle, pink Starks, and the Necco candy roll that today is available at the Dollar Tree store.
