San Diego is 6 hours away and I've been to that zoo. It IS wonderful. However, our zoo is one of the best in California and is growing constantly. We ended up not going because Carson was sick.
Made a bunny cake yesterday with the grands and today we're decorating Easter eggs. Should be fun and messy.

Nas--glad you're making progress.
Taking the grands and their mom to the zoo today. Going to see (I hope) the 4 baby Malaysian tigers and some other new babies!

I got the dreaded grocery shopping done. The grands have the week off this coming week and I have crafts and cooking projects planned. We'll also color Easter eggs and I'm planning a day at the zoo. Luckily it'll be in the 80s. And I'm sure they'll want to use the new pool.
Have a great week everyone.

Thanks for the advice Justyna.
It's odd to think about ice and floods when the weather here has been in the 90s and is now in the 80s.

We have interesting guests here. I think I mentioned them coming... hunters who are Cree, here to shoot geese. They are out tonight to see what the flocks are like. They only brought one freezer with them plus 2 coolers and there are 5 adults and two 2 year olds.

I baked cookies and banana bread this afternoon and they were very excited to try them. I wonder what they will think of crepes for breakfast?. I mentioned bacon and eggs and one woman said she would prefer something else so I promised a different breakfast every morning. Makes it fun for me. However... I did eat some cookies when they came out. I have not done that in a long time. A few stresses in our house. My eldest burned her face while cooking with oil and it does not look very nice this morning. My husband is out looking for aloe vera but my friend said we should get a perscription for flamazoid which means taking her to a walk in clinic and DH has not been answering his phone. We are finally meeting our family doctor next week but I think that is too late. I have been putting polysporin on it so far. Lips, cheeks, around her nose and spots on her neck from splashes of oil when she turned something. We did put ice on right away but a layer of skin has come off. Not good. Also some worries about flooding here and our rental unit. They predict the river is at it's highest right now but rain is coming all week. A road has already been closed due to flooding and a sinkhole in town and the bridges are "scary/fun" to cross. Rushing water and lakes depending on where you are in town. Behind us is definitely the rushing water and icebergs.

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

Geri the spasms can happen anywhere and the pain, I KNOW! I've had them in the small muscles of my foot, around my hip, and thighs. Put pressure on them, rub them, hot compress. Pray they don't last and then stock up on Coenzyme Q10, Magnesium and Calcium. The only thing is there can be a medication corrolation. I have a doctor requisition on my bulliton board to test CK levels (creatin) which can go up if you are on statins- cholesterol meds and cause cramps in ANY muscle in the body including the heart. Typically after a heart attack CK levels are also raised. If you are having blood work on a regular basis your doctor should check for this, just in case. Dehydration can also cause cramps, or not stretching post workout.

I AM glad your leg is improving Nas.

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

I guess they're not finishing the pool until Monday. The pool looks funny with tile and nothing else in it.
I had a killer spasm last night. I get Charlie horses in my calves on a regular basis. Last night they hit in both thighs right in the front and rolled into the backs. I've never had a thigh spasm!! You can't stretch it out. I tried walking them out but I couldn't put my leg straight and my DH (dear husband) had to walk me back to bed. I was so dizzy and disoriented. That's never happened!! It took quite a while of me screaming and crying before I was able to find a position I could sleep in. Luckily, this a.m. I'm fine and nothing is wrong. My thighs are a little sore but not enough to stay down.
Must go grocery shopping. Ugh!

Oops, Sorry Robbie.. you would think by now I would know everybody's family tree! emoticon

I'm looking forward to the pictures Geri. I had a clean eating day yesterday, hurray! And I read a blog that was very inspiring by the blogger of the day. I'm going to print out his blog and re read it carefully becuase there were a lot of treasures there for stress and emotional eating and the scale. Big to do list today. I didn't get the pup to the vet to get her stitches out. I'm not sure if they are open Saturdays but if not it will have to be Monday.

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

Welcome Sharsha. We love new blood and new ideas. Thank you Justyna for the baggie tip. I would never have thought of using one with the bathtub. My kids say I'm book smart but no common sense.
No, I don't swim and I'm the one who has the grandkids. Robbie has tons of nieces and sisters, etc.
My grands swim but I watch them from the side. I know how to swim, it's just such a nuisance to get in, get wet, get off, etc, etc. I just don't enjoy it enough to do it. If I had to jump in to save someone I would. However, I tell my grands that if they make me go it, they're grounded! With the baby, it's going to be hard. When it hits 110, the baby will want to cool off. Luckily, my DD (dear daughter) goes in all the time and she can take her in.
The pool got the tile in today and it looks good. Time for the bottom and sides!

Welcome Sharsha3!

I have no idea how many times I "started over". Never feel bad about it. Hehehe if you want to read my spark success story it is below in my signiture. It was just posted a fortnight ago so I'm still getting comments on it. But in the story I talk about how I was ready to give up.

Look to your strengths. You say you live to eat. So can you use that? There are several streaks suggested in spark people like trying to get 5 fruits and vegetables in every day. Why not make that your personal challenge? Brain storm recipes you love that are vegetable based and then try to find a new vegetable recipe to try each week. I used to associate salads with dieting and could not get myself to eat them so I found lots of roasted and stewed vegetable dishes that now are part of my "toolbox" of foods I know are healthy for me. I eat salads now but it took me years to change that attitude.

Geri here is not a swimmer but Robbie is especially with her grandkids. I am in the water frequently, mostly walking. It's so good for my knees. I have neuropathy as well from ankylosing spondilitis. My chiropractor keeps me moving. I have a think I do neck stretches on. It is supposed to be every day for 20 minutes so any day you are on here ask me if I did my neck stretches... I tend to forget. Nas does chair exercises and is using a walker... are you still Nas? There are some good chair exercise videos on spark people.

I love reading. DH means Dear husband and DS is for Dear Son etc. So my DH and DD (daughter) have electronic books and put them in zip locks so they can read them in the hot tub.

You may laugh but I have been known to take a book in the pool and read it while walking around the outside in a big circle. But you know what, it got me moving! Got some looks.... but hahaha I'm over 50 so I'm allowed to do foolish things. People think exercise has to mean "going to the gym" but spark people suggests doing something for ten minutes every day... and it really does not have to be going to the gym. My exercise yesterday was stripping paint off of tiles in a bathroom. Anything that has you lifting, bending, reaching and moving your feet .... so looking after your grandkiddos for sure!

OK that is my two cents.

So, just popping in to say I spent most of today doing errands. I cleaned up the bathroom from the paint scraping and found some peel and stick pretty tiles that might work to cover the retro flower designs that were underneath. Or... I'll paint them some neutral colour.

Geri you are so right. I would NOT want a house that was quiet. I was just in a mood yesterday and feel better today. Good thing becuase we have a birthday group coming in to the B&B. Eleven year olds. I think there will be six plus a sibling and of course the supervising mom and dad. I'll set up a buffet table for breakfast where they can build their own crepes with fruit and chocolate and whip cream. Of course I'll have healthy cereals and yogurts as an option. I usually make oatmeal for myself those mornings. Mmmm oatmeal and peaches and flax seed.

Hello - I would like to join all of you in the hen house. Have often heard and said, '3rd time is the charm', praying that is so, as this is my third time to start on SP since 2008. Did a turn at WW in between two and three. May only 'good' item is that at least I am starting lower than I my previous attempts.
I am 69, retired, have one step son, who has made me a Grandmother of 3, and I love being a Grandmother, even 3#. I was 5'5 1/2 " prior to three lumbar back surgeries combined with age I am now 5'3", which of course, makes me heavier than ever. Born and raised a couch potato - as a child I was always reading - still do, but usually now on one electronic toy or another. I live to eat rather than eating to live. So dieting and then maintaining is and has been a life long struggle. But if I do not get some weight off - and exercise as much as possible - I am headed to additional surgeries, worse neuropathy and ability to attend all sorts of activities that the Kidos (my term for grandchildren) are involved with. Exercise for me is either pool (what a pain, I go to the local Y, insurance pays for the Silver Sneaker Program) or sitting/laying down. I am going to try my Hubby's tread mill - but would be surprised if I get enough time in to make much of a difference - health wise.
I do not understand the Initials used to represent individuals - could some one either fill me in or tell me where I can find them? You seem to know each other well - but for the most part I did not read where that info was exchanged, but then only a couple of months is on line. Does that info exchange via spark 'email' or other?
So glad to have found a friendly message board that seems full of support for each other, hope to become a regular.
Blessings,

With a husband, grown daughter, 16 year old GS, grown son, 10 month old GD here and then a GD and GS after school, sometimes I wish for peace and quiet and alone time. I am NEVER without someone around. However, I won't wish for alone time because I don't want anything to happen to any of them. I'll take the noise and confusion and messes and meals and figure I get time to myself when I'm in heaven.
The men are here today and putting the tile in. It's so exciting to watch it being rebuilt from the ground up.

How is the pool coming?

I was so happy that DH and DD played bananagrams last night without me. Love games and love time with family but just wanted time to myself. I hear that is common with menopause... wanting to nest and only look after yourself. I kiind of feel like I would like to live by myself today with no one to cook for but me, no one to think "PLEASE declutter that area" or wonder how we will find a new home that will meet all our needs... argh! Sometimes it frustrates me that no one read my plan for retirement. Ha!

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

I SHOULD have wacked my head.... realizing I was getting too caught up in excercise and losing sight of my clean eating goal. Grrr.

DH and I had our coffee in the pool are this morning. Lovely warm. We commented that there is no bird feeder at that side of the house which would be messy but it would be nice maybe to put up a hummingbird feeder there this year under the trees.... still we say morning doves and a bunch of other birds. DH saw a robin he says and I'm pretty sure I could hear one. Nice to sit and chat. I am still in my PJ's and someone just came to the door. Jehovah's witness. He comes by regularly. I asked him to stop leaving pamphlets saying guests don't like seeing them around. Once in a blue moon I will read an article because I like what they talk about often... but I am losing patience. I'm always polte and sometimes have time to chat but I am not interested in converting.

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

Our pool was empty and sandblasted today. It was so noisy and dust was in the air everywhere. I'm glad that doesn't happen every day.
I really whacked my head today and almost passed out. Luckily I hit the wall with my back and I think that helped me stay focused. No aftereffects except a slight headache.

I'm pretty sure I heard a robin today! There is still snow everywhere including the roof but the solar panels are starting to generate energy!

I'm having a hard day with food... have not had anything off plan yet but had a snack instead of lunch and now it is mid afternoon and I'm hungry and grumpy. I need to go eat but don't trust myself to make a good decision. Grrr. Just do it! Be a grown up! Pull out the Super J powers. Hmmph. I'm tired and would like tea and toast. I DO have high fiber bread so I guess that would be OK. Just don't feel like salad or soup,.

The rain and mountain snow were very welcomed. It'll help our drought a little.
Our swimming pool is drained and now we can watch as a new pool is built. It's not really new but re-newed. We'll get new floor and sides and new tile and the coping will be fixed. Also the pump and underwater light will be up to date. Woo hoo. Grandkids can hardly wait!

I read your story and said, "Is that OUR Justyna?" It was so good. You've done a great job.
It didn't ever rain today but has been in the 60s. I've had the fireplace off and on all day.
I hope everyone had a good day.

Summer??? Rain!!!! OK I want to change the view from my window. Snow and more snow. Either I go out and make a snow angel or... get my snowshoes back out because I am tired of being tired of it.

Interesting day today. All in front of the computer. My spark story was posted on the main page... I was NOT expecting that... and has had over 1500 views. I have spent the whole afternoon replying to comments and it has been... an adventure. I just felt like if they took the time to send a goodie or read my blog or say something kind I should respond so I have been to a LOT of spark pages today. My goodness there is a lot of inspiration on this site. People who are struggling, who are still tweaking and growing even though they have been years in maintenance, people who are so energetic and doing amazing things... I never would have found their pages if not for this post today.

I do wonder if I will have grandchildren some day. I enjoy the children who come to the B&B. This morning as I got up the mom (very pregnant) was at the front door with her middlest who is 8 waiting for gramma to come and pick her up. At 6:30 am. Because.... her DD 8 going on 12 apparently had quite the tantrum in the wee hours and woke up the whole family who had had to drive in a snow storm to get here and arrived at 2:00 am. Henceforth gramma was called. So no swim, no breakfast, and a teary eyed very sad young girl had to leave. She will be back shortly. They are here to celebrate mom's birthday and the gramma and all the family are currently at gramma's and will come here for a swim and cake. I remember those days. I had 2 daughters who were like oil and water. You used to be able to see our dining room (now it is our exercise room) from the main room table where we eat and to have a civilized meal for a while we had to have one of them sit in the dining room while the rest of us ate at the other table. It was not forever but when they tried to be together one would say something, touch something, or just look in a certain way that would set the other one off. I think the climax was mother's day when DH had arranged a surprise brunch at a revolving restaraunt downtown Ottawa. We barely got out of our village when the girls started arguing. I told my husband to turn around and go home. I would not ruin my "day" by being with them. They were so shocked that it stopped. All the bickering. I spent the day in my room with a pot of tea reading a book. Now they are in their 20's and appreciate each other. It's not easy to be a parent and say no. It can't be easy to be a child either.

Sorry I am not here more often. My biggest loser challenge seems to be going well. I have been trying a lot of new videos on spark people. I have had a few successful days of all clean eating. Today I had some leftover sausage pie and put a cookie in my mouth and my DD said "why are you doing that?" and I put it in the garbage. Why indeed? I think I will always be battling my food dragon!

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

I'm taking an older GS with me on some errands. We're going to the farmer's market and then to the nursery to get some flowers for my front porch. We need to beat the rain which is due this afternoon.

I dislike therapy. I had about 16 weeks of it when I had my knees replaced and I don't want to do it again. I'd rather do the exercises at home.

Hey, "my name is Justyna and I'm a Hen House groupie"... who has been MIA for a little while, hehehe.

I remember in my diabetic training they said eat within a half hour of waking... In training they said "is is better to have a suagred donut or nothing?" and the answer was the donut. Not that the donut is the best choice but nothing is a very bad choice. I am not the best role model because I take a medication in the morning and need an HOUR before eating, plus I used to try and exercise for at least ten minutes before every meal. I get too busy and admit my first meal is sometimes delayed. There at big consequences though. The liver has to dump sugar into the blood to try and compensate when you are sleeping if your blood sugars bottom out so that is why we often have high fasting blood sugars. Passing out to me seems like living in denial or looking for attention. You might want to say something like "I am not comfortable when you come here not having eaten because I am not prepared to call 911 if you go into diabetic shock. You need to take responsibility for your disease."

Pool. We have certainly chatted about swimming before. I know how you feel Geri so won't push. I know that after my car accident I could not swim because of neck problems so I started walking in the water (reading a book gets stares) which is 3x more work than on land but no joint impact so easy on knees, hips and ankles. From there I have progressed. Nothing wrong with wearing a life jacket or waist jogging belt even in the shallow end. I admire anyone who tries. But now I do aquafit (shallow and deep end) and have tried aqua zumba, aqua tai chi, and made up my own moves for aqua belly dancing and aqua kick boxing.

Nas, I'm glad you are getting better. Hahaha, my mom was/is a terrible cook. OK she can make a turkey dinner... but my brother and I were just saying we hated meat until we were in our teens because she cooked everthing until it was like leather or mush. We were quite poor so a lot of hamburger or tuna mixed into a lot of pasta and corn to make it spread further. Sad how we used to eat. A lot of peanut butter and bread.

PaCarolSue I have some lovely belly scars. Knee scars, chin scars, hand and wrist scars. Lots of surgeries over the years and yeah... I got my first apron belly after emergency surgery where they sliced open my belly side to side to find internal bleeding. I was only a teenager and ever after I had this apron belly. Oh well. Memories I guess. Makes me grateful I have had no surgeries for a couple of years. Hope you heal well without complications!

Hey Robbie, how are you doing? Really? I think it has been a year now on your own? I kind of have lost track of how long I have been visiting this thread. You were one of the first people I met here so it was sad not to have you around for a while. And here you are again! Woo hoo!

I've been pretty busy. I am still blogging nearly every day on spark people (Nas has been keeping up, thank you my friend) and part of several very active teams. I'm eating clean with no sugar as much as I can. 5 freggies a day. 10 minutes of exercise at least once a day. I have a spark activity tracker now so am wearing that in the pool, snow, grocerie shopping... and my goal is at least 5500 steps a day (10,000 they say is "normal"). Whew! I am also very pleased..??? to say I am in onederland again. Last time was briefly before Christmas and short lived. Yesterday I got caught up on paperwork (huge for me before taxes). B&B has had some fascinating guests. I have a Cree family coming soon from Northern Quebec for a week of hunting geese. I guess they don't get a spring hunt up there so are bringing 2 freezers with them and will hunt, pluck, seer, boil and freeze... The men will go out at 4:00 am and come back for a late breakfast and then then the women will prepare the geese. The 2 year old said she will teach me some Cree words so I can speak to the grandmother. So cool!

No Robins yet. A fat mourning dove. Owls have moved into the area, huge white ones that are like ghosts suddenly flying in front of your windshield in the night... almost had a heart attack... No one knows why they have come south. We have chcikadees, sparrows, cardinals, blue jays, hawks, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers. It's a nice "view" for guests over breakfast watching the birdfeeder. Big snowfall a couple of days ago and more apparently ahead. My dog just had surgery so not supposed to walk... but I took her around the block anyways in the snow. We are waiting for a biopsy result and I figure if her life is near the end then she may as well not be confined to a cage. Also removed the cone of shame.. she is pretty lethargic and leaving the stitches alone.

My sister is Type 2. She's is 73 and I think she just gets too busy. I know the last time she didn't eat, she had an early a.m. vet appointment. She got up late, rushed to the vet, did some errands and went home for a nap. That's why she didn't eat.

Gerikraugh, I have heard of other diabetics passing out from not eating. Is she Type1? I am type 2. No matter how busy I am, I never forget to eat. It would probably be better for me if I did once in a while. My blood sugar is never low. It is always too high. In fact, I'm having blood work done this week and the DR will probably increase my meds.

That's what they say about swimming, but it is too hard for me to kick against the water. Knees won't work that way. And I'm not a good enough swimmer for laps. Also, this year I have to watch the two older babes and I have the baby that I have to watch. I just don't have time to jump in with all my clothes and then spend most of the day drying off!

Geri, I know you don't like to get wet, but swimming is the best exercise you can get that doesn't put pressure on your joints.
Nas, I am also diabetic and it's a daily struggle.
I hope everyone is enjoying their wekend.

My sister has passed out twice with diabetes. She got busy and didn't realize she hadn't eaten. Luckily, someone found her both times. I don't know how long she would have lain in her house.

You just never realize how bad diabetes is until you hear what people go through. Most people just think you can't eat sugar, like ciliacs can't eat gluten. It's much more than that.

Yes, you are very lucky on that point Nas. I am also diabetic. Had surgery in Dec 2011, problems with the incision and had daily visiting nurse care for 6 months. My belly will never be the same again! But I'm glad it's over with.

Geridragh, I'm glad to hear you got to spend that time with your mother. It must have been very heartwarming for you.

Nas, I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty. Walking with the walker should help you to get stronger every day.

I have my MIL's walker since she passed away. I hope I never need it, but if I do, I will be glad to have it.

I know what you mean. It's suppose to be 81 degrees today.
We have an old swimming pool and we're getting it redone. We picked the bottom and sides and tiles yesterday. By really warm weather, we'll have an almost new swimming pool.
