Hi everyone - this is my first post. I'm just feeling my way around here and know next to nothing about what to do or how to do it - things like spark points, etc. I'm 53 live in Alberta, Canada. Have many health issues and had 4 major surgeries between 2005-2006 each one required cutting open from right under breast bone to pubic bone - a right mess! couldn't exercise for a long, long time. I'd never been overweight until after the surgeries & have about 50 lbs to lose I am so mad at and frustrated with myself! using champix, I quit smoking - nothing for just over 2 months then read where a friend had quit and had tried a 'prime time' (something like a flavored cigarette) wish I'd NEVER read that - I'd had them before and liked them so thought = oh, I'll try one - so bought two and as you've guessed, kept buying them, till I've now ended up buying my 4th pack of cigarettes .....aargh! told myself all the usual lies like - well, I'll just smoke one once in awhile when I really 'need' one ..... big fat lie! anyway, any advice on how to use this whole program, on life in general, on exercise (I use a ball and a bike - have a treadmill but with plantar fascia and a bum knee, found out can't do that anymore - love to swim but live out in the sticks and it's a long way to go... thanks for listening - hope I can even find my way back here :-) deb

I'll be smoke free one year come December 12th. It has not been easy but I'm glad I did it. I just take a deep breathe and count slowly to 10 when I get that urge to light up ~ so far so good!

I am having super cravings. I know they can't be "actual" nicotine cravings since it's now been 17 days and it's out of my system. But MAN DO I WANT A CIGARETTE!!
I've lost 1.5 pounds (but weigh in is tomorrow for me - so maybe 2 pounds) this week and smoking sounds really good.
and support I could get would be great!

The first few days are the toughest (so I've heard). I think my first 5 days were easy on me because I was on bedrest with pneumonia. I couldn't breathe air let alone my cigarettes. The hardest part for me now is right after I eat. But that's about it. I'm on day 13.
Good luck to you!!! ames

Hi everyone! I was down for the last six days with pneumonia. I have now gone seven days without cigarrettes. I simply DO NOT want to smoke anymore. Obviously, right now I don't have the urge to smoke yet. I still can't breathe 100%. But I do have to admit that I am finding that I have more time that I didn't realize. Who would have thought that smoking takes up time? It's crazy. That's a battle I've been dealing with for a long time is NOT ENOUGH TIME!
So, I've lost some weight since August 4th and now I'm not going to smoke. Wish me luck and please give any guidance you can!
Thanks.

I quit smoking July 4, 1989 the day I got married. The last carton of cigarettes it cost me $9.99 which included tax. It was the best thing I ever did,not just health wise, but in cost. The price of cigarettes today is more then I ever thought it would be. But congrats to all of you for doing it. even after 20 years I still get cravings, but I can't take the smell anymore. I can tell when my kids go to their friends house and that house has smokers they come home smelling like an ashtray.

I quit nearly 2 years ago, and while sometimes I still miss it, the other day a funny thing happened, someone was smoking near me and I screwed my face up and moved away, I didn't even notice I had done it until my partner laughed and told me. I have come a long, long way
Well done everyone!

Congratulations to all of those who have kicked the habit. I smoked my last cigarette on 02/16/09. I smoked for 35 years and at the time I quit I was smoking about 2 packs a day. I used nicotine gum for several months and that helped me a bunch.
For those having trouble quitting or who are gaining a lot of weight give nicotine gum a try. The gum, rather than food took the place of cigarettes for me. I went through a very stressful time with my mother and I went from chewing 5 pieces of gum to 20 or more, that is more than I used when I first quit. Without the gum I am sure I would have gone back to smoking. I used the gum for almost 5 months, longer than recommended but I apparently needed it. Now I rarely think about or get the urge to smoke, once a week or so and only for a few seconds so it is really not an issue.
Quitting smoking is absolutely the best thing you can do for your health. Good luck to all of you still trying, don't give up.

LAPETA,
Thank you for your support
I'm trying to lose around 10 pounds, so I'm pretty confident it won't take me so long (hopefully!). That's what I'm focused on right now. But trying to lead a healthy life AND smoking makes me feel kinda weird. Like I'm not fully committed (even though I am). However, I have the feeling that once my healthy ways (nutrition- and fitness-wise) finally sink in, I'll feel even more motivated to quit smoking!

If I would have known I was going to gain weight when I quit smoking, I would have done what you are doing. That's exactly what happened to me. I was trying to quit smoking and diet at the same time. Drove me crazy.
What you don't want to use as an excuse for too long, is your weight loss. It took me about six months to lose my weight. If you wait too long, you might lose the desire to quit smoking. How much weight are you trying to lose before you try stop smoking.
Good Luck and keeping you in my prayers.

That's fantastic!!!!
BIG CONGRATS!
I've been a smoker for almost 13 years now (NOT proud of it at all!)
Since I began SP (almost 3 weeks ago), I've thought of focusing on quitting after I reach my weight goal. I'd like to be able to do it now, but I feel that'd be overwhelming. I'd rather take baby steps and be consistent because too much, too soon, could be counterproductive.
Anyhow, reading your messages about smoke-free success, motivates me to do it as soon as I lose these pounds!
Keep it up!

SUSIEREARDON AND TMSET what I found out about he urges are they might come, but they only last, for me, a couple seconds. Just resist for those few seconds and you'll find out the urges will stretch farther and farther apart.
I also prayed alot. Lord get me through this second, this moment, this hour, this day, this month. It's been 21 years for me now. Praise God. It was by the grace of God that I was able to quit and make it through the urges. Don't give into to them. Get busy with your hands.
Good Luck to All Whose trying to stop smoking. Don't quit quitting.

Congratulations!!! Hope you can keep it up. I don't want to demoralise you, but do you realise that giving up smoking AND loosing weight is almost impossible to do? The body will demand a substitute for the nicotine and it's most times always food. I have gained 15 Kg in 2003 and loosing them now. My hubby has gained 10 Kg in less then 6 month and he isn't eating that much.
If you'd like to begin a personal relationship with Jesus today, please pray this prayer: Lord Jesus, I invite You into my life. I believe You died for me and that Your blood pays for my sins, I now turn from everything I know is wrong. Thank you for the gift of eternal life, By faith I receive that gift, and I acknowledge You as my Lord and Saviour. Amen

I stopped buying smokes on July 1, 2009. Used Nicorette for about a month (worked great). Broke down and bought a couple packs, felt horrible, physically after those two days. I am back on track, all on my own, no Nicorette! Ten days and counting...this time, it's for keeps!
