I would like to see a tool in where you can delete favorite foods more than one at a time. It is very time consuming. Like maybe hold shift delete.. would be nice, and fast.

Thought I would bump this thread up as a gentle reminder to the powers that be. Not only would it keep spark members from going to these other sites for average weight tools, but would attract some of the people there to give sparkpeople a try!

I think it would be just one more wonderful tool for us to use. Especially for those of us that have an emotional attachment to the scale.

I've something of a facility with numbers - it's my job after all - so I can envision a current weighted average in my head ...

Otherwise, I would be rather depressed at today's weight results ...

But this weighted average too is for most of us ... who, who is managing their weight, as opposed to lucking into a stable weight - hits the bull's eye every single day?

I think an average weight tool would be great! I use several sites and apps to manage my health, but it was SP that helped me get to my goal weight: a loss of over 100 lbs. As I maintain, it would be great to be able to continue on Spark People. The fitness and food trackers are great. The average weight tool would help make the site even more useful to me.

adding my vote to those who would like to see this tool on SparkPeople! I also use a different site to track my daily weight, and rarely log in into SP because of the lack of the weighted average.

I think a weight moving average calculator would be a great addition to the awesome toolset we already have here on SP. We all know the the value of not getting too hung up on the scale. This is a great way of doing just that.

BTW I think the changes to the Start Page and point system hve really hit the mark. Thanks!

I, too, keep track of everything on SP but have to track weight on another site, then move the average over to SP if it changes significantly. All-in-one would be better! SP is so great for while we are losing, but falls down some for the many of us who are maintaining! I think the more maintainers the losers can see, the better -- to give people hope that it IS possible to make a lifestyle change & keep the weight off!! Coach Jen, please talk to the "powers that be" and see about adding an Average Weight Tool!

Vtricia, I don't think anyone here, including Spark itself, is saying daily weighing isn't useful. Being able to use that data to establish significant trends rather than insignificant variations is the issue.

I actually don't weigh every day anymore-- contraindicated for bingers- but when I did for long periods of time, on and off for years. I weighed every day and averaged it once a week. I later used physicsdiet, which was even better. It's not just better, it's more accurate. A trend is much more important in assessing the value of a behavior.

I'm grateful to Spark for all the free features and understand such a feature would involve a greater financial investment, but I respectfully ask for this investment.

Please provide a moving average weight recording tool.

Researchers have looked at whether daily weighing is demotivational:
“Results from this study suggest that, after adjusting for BMI, there is no significant association between depressed mood and self-monitoring of body weight in a community-based sample of adult women.” (Linde et al. 2007)

Daily weighing is associated with better weight maintenance and weight loss:
“Since self-weighing is a key component of the self-regulation model, we compared the proportion of participants in each group who reported weighing themselves at least daily… In addition, in the face-to-face and Internet groups, a smaller proportion of participants who weighed themselves daily regained 2.3 kg or more, as compared with those who weighed themselves less.” (Wing et al. 2006)

“Results support the idea that daily weighing is valuable to individuals trying to lose weight or prevent weight gain. Daily self-weighing should be emphasized in clinical and public health messages about weight control.” (Linde et al. 2005)

I have asked on this site before, for a weighted moving average like that suggested by the Hacker's Diet. I'm currently using my own Google spreadsheet to do this. (See the "weight chart" link in my signature, below.)

This tool helped me lose the weight, and it helps me maintain my weight. For all of the reasons enumerated by the other people who have commented. The main thing is that you're watching a trend line, not the fluctuations on whatever particular day you happen to weigh yourself.

I am asking again. Please consider implementing a weighted moving average option for graphing and tracking our weight.

Thank you.

The biggest challenge, and the one area where there is a huge, gaping hole for millions of people, is "maintaining a healthy weight".

SPARKPEOPLE has the opportunity to be THE website that steps up to this challenge in the most profound way. Maintainers know that vigilance is a key component, stepping on that scale to monitor where we stand. But it's frustrating, and can be discouraging, so that this "averaging" tool would be a great addition.

Please help us SPARKERS be the best we can be, help us beat the odds of re-gaining weight, add the averaging tool.

THANKS, from the bottom of my heart, for this website.

I would also love to see this tool here. I'm a daily weigher, but use the longer-term trends to help ensure that I'm staying on the right track. Not having to go to another web site for an analysis of these trends would be fantastic and I think this tool could be useful for many people.

Yes!

Right now I'm back on weight loss mode so I'm not using physics diet, but when maintaining it is a great tool. It keeps me from freaking out about a one day spike, and keeps me in touch with my real weight. (I'm not really at my goal until my average is at my goal!)

I think it's a great tool and it would take the stress away from people who are used to weighing in daily. I may not be one of them but I believe it would still help me see the trend and make the necessary adjustments. I definitely vote for it!

Coach Jen, I hope you can encourage this with SparkPeople! I recently learned about weight averaging and started using the Weight Grapher website. I'd prefer to keep my health & fitness tracking on one website and having SP add a similar tool would be awesome.

I do a simple moving average in an Excel sheet; if a weighted average became a standard at SP, I'd consider switching to that. And yes, I weigh daily. Once a week isn't enough data, and I don't have an emotional investment in the weight for any one particular day.

It would be GREAT to see a tool like this on SparkPeople! I use an outside tool for tracking ny average weight over time, but it's a pain to have to enter it elsewhere when SP is the main site I use.

I'd like to see something like this, too!! Please--I am trying to maintain and don't want to stress out if I don't have to--or ignore something I should pay attention to!

I would love the chance of having moving averages. I stress about every 0.2 pounds. Coach Jen I hope you can make it happen.

I would definitely second the suggestion of moving averages on SP weight graphs.

I log my weight on my Android phone using Libra. It has some features not directly in the Hacker's Diet book, such as a forecast line which I like but MUST be able to be turned off because it would get most people down. It also can show an expected goal date based on where the forecast line hits goal, BMI lines, and a plan line. Depending on how your diet works for you these can also be valuable features, I find.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll pass it along.

Agreed, I find the moving average tool in the Hacker's diet to be very motivational.

I'm not at maintenance yet, but I still use a tool outside SP to keep a moving average of my weight. This way, I don't get all upset when the scale goes up and don't immediately think any loss is a reality.

A moving average tool would be really beneficial to those people who really want to see progress.

I agree with Mandy and I would like the same.

I use such a tool at The Hacker's Diet site ( http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/online/hdo.html ). I would come to Spark People more if there was such a tool here.

Everybody knows that weighing yourself every day is pointless because daily weighings are erratic due to shifting water weight. On the other hand, everybody knows that if they do not weight themselves often enough and get enough feedback, they can backslide.

Computing a running average ( the way The Hacker's Diet does ) solves that problem.

You can weigh yourself everyday, screen out water weight issues, and get good feedback on your weight every day to keep you on track.

Hi! I'm Mandy and I'm a maintainer. Many of us over on the maintenance team weigh daily and use other websites that average those figures. It is a really awesome tool to take the drama out of those daily fluctuations.

I don't think there is an option like this here on sparkpeople and I'd like to suggest it.

Thanks!
