I didn't know there was a different calorie burn for different types of yoga. Good to know.

YOUDUNN, all of these options are now available in the fitness tracker. When this post was made more than a year ago, they were not.

Yes I'd be interested. I've also copied some information from Livestrong.com that tells you how many calories are burned doing a specific type of yoga. There are many types, so it needs to be specific. - Kae from Ontario
The American Council on Exercise reports that a typical 50-minute hatha yoga session burns approximately 144 calories, while 50 minutes of more intense power yoga or ashtanga burns about 237 calories. That translates to 172 calories burned in an hour of less intense hatha yoga and 284 calories burned during an hour of power yoga.

Is there a Yoga Group or Challenge (for consistency)? I can't find it if it's in SP.

I'd just like to post along with others who are interested in Hatha Yoga. My Goal is to do it everyday along with my other workouts.

Will yoga be added to the app? It is frustrating that even though I have yoga saved as a favorite I can't pull it up on my phone and have to get on the computer if I want it logged.

I couldn't find hatha yoga, which is the basic, and I'm not doing vinyasa, so I looked it up on another site and added it. I will have to search for it under general stretching as well.

Update: just checked and found it. Can find when using my computer, but not when I'm home using the iPad app.

Hot yoga doesn't provide a higher calorie burn; adding heat doesn't actually cause you to burn more calories, it just raises your heart rate because your heart is working harder.

Yoga is beneficial, you burn calories, strengthen our bodies, breathing, tone muscles; improving flexibility and balance. I think you burn more calories with power yoga or hot yoga

If you use the new version of the fitness tracker, you will see that there is an option for yoga (general stretching) and one for Power Yoga.

I agree with you. I go to Yoga class for 1 hour twice a week and we do not stop moving the whole time. While it may not qualify as cardio or traditional strength training, it is beneficial, we do burn calories, and we do strengthen our bodies. Additionally we practice breathing; we tone muscles; we stretch muscles; we improve flexibility; and we improve balance.

So how do we encourage Sparkpeople.com to make a category for Yoga as an exercise which gets proper credit for the work accomplished?

Thanks so much for clearing that up for me because my heart rate does get up with some routines and I am using muscle I didn't know I had. Hahaha I didn't realize just how much I don't know about exercising until I joined Spark.I have always worked hard physically (farming etc.) and I have taken for granted on just how good of shape I used to be in. I am finding it very hard to regain that strength without doing that kind of work. I have a lot of work ahead of me! Again, thanks for taking the time to explain that to me.....it is soooo beneficial!

Lishwa, just to be clear, yoga isn't cardio not because of the heart rate (even regular yoga can and does get your heart rate up, especially if you're overweight) but because it doesn't engage large muscle groups in repetitive motion for 10 minutes or more. It's isometric, and holds poses, like a plank does.

Because yoga is a hybrid of strength and flexbility training, it's not really a big calorie burner. I've done a good bit of research on this, and for me at 190, at MOST, I *might* burn around 200 calories for a regular yoga session. Now, if you get into the power yoga sort of thing, you might start engaging muscles in a way that more closely resembles cardio, but regular yoag really doesn't meet the criteria.

The way I track it is one of two: I either count it under cardio with a 1 calorie burn for points and convenient tracking, or I add it to my quick tracker for fitness minute credits.

However, since it doesn't burn a significant amount of calories, it's not really an appropriate replacement for cardio. It provides many other very tangible and helpful benefits (such as greater flexibility, balance, control and strength for cardio) so keep doing it! Consider those calories to be bonus calories, like when you strength train.

It doesn't burn enough calories per hour to be tracked, since it doesn't get your heart racing. It's more of stretching/strength training so you would track it in the quick track section.

General yoga is not cardio, which is why it is not listed.

I find yoga to be very beneficial to me and I was disappointed to find that there is no way to track calories burned for basic or beginners yoga. Is anyone else interested in having Spark add this to the exercise tracking program?
