Yet another gluten intolerant Sparker who wishes she could use the meal plan option in the food tracker.

Gluten-free plea!!!!!!!!!!

I'm on a gf diet and would really ask Spark people to consider adding.

I have been using sparkpeople of and on for 7 years now AND LOVE IT! worked so well for me on the first go around. but in the last 6 months have been diagnosed with Celiacs and now as much as I love sp it is almost toooo much of a hassle to track everything because there is a HUGE nutritional difference in gf foods. I would be the happiest girl alive if there was a gf meal plan. :-) pretty please.

I agree with the gluten-free idea. I would also like to see a high-fiber option. My doctor tells me that I need to be on a high-fiber diet. Of course, I do that on my own right now, but it would just be helpful if I could track it here.

I am in the process of eliminating gluten from my diet. I don't have celiac disease, but have found that glutens aggravate the arthritis in my hands and knees. I feel much better on a gluten-free diet. I would LOVE to see a GF menu plan on Sparkpeople for additional ideas.

Really glad I am not the only one looking for a gluten-free diet. I just found out I am allergic to wheat and celery, which means a gluten-free diet is what I am pretty much on now. I am trying to find ways to adjust and was really hoping that there was a wheat-free diet on here.

Hey, Rockeritalulu. I don't do dairy any more at all. I replace milk and cream with no sugar added So Delicious Coconut Milk Creamer, canned full-fat coconut milk, or So Delicious unsweetened coconut milk. Sometimes I use almond milk. I don't eat prepared breakfast cereals, so I use these things on my cooked oatmeal or in other recipes. I still eat butter and that doesn't bother me. If it bothers you, you can try ghee, which is butter with the milk solids removed. This is something you can make yourself, too. I am currently getting meal loans elsewhere (that I pay for) that are SO helpful because they all have gluten free, dairy free, soy free alternatives. I find it really worth the cost. Any other way I can help, I'm happy to.

I agree with what everyone else on this forum has commented thus far. A gluten free plan would be great. I just started on SparkPeople and are constantly having to update the meal plan to attempt to create Gluten/Soy/Dairy/Sugar Free.

I'm taking notes of the tips everyone has shared. Thank you for that... and keep the tips coming!! Especially on how to make up for the lost nutrients. I'm particularly having trouble finding substitutes for dairy items...

I'd love to see a gluten-free meal plan here, too. Dairy-free would be great as well. I follow the Nourishing Traditions recipe book for a lot of my meals. I eliminated using the wheat and other gluten-containing recipes, or changed them. I'val also got a copy of The virgin diet, which eliminated 7 foods that a lot of people can be sensitive to. This has helped me a lot! It helps keep my 28-pound weight loss a real loss. Actually getting enough nutrition can be a bit of a problem with all of the restrictions, though. So some easy recipes and ways to do that, and track it easily within the meal plan option, would be helpful.

Me too! Gluten-free eating is becoming more and more a mainstream diet....as can be seen by how many products now tout being gluten-free.

There is a wealth of scientific evidence that the genetic modifications made to wheat have resulted in a growing number of people becoming gluten-intolerant.

I didn't even consider it was the source of my symptoms until my sister, who is quite sensitive to gluten now, discovered that eliminating gluten eliminated the painful and disfiguring bouts of facial edema she was experiencing.

For me, it was inexplicable swelling in my feet (sometimes they became unrecognizable as MY feet!) and terrible stomach pains/heartburn/GERD.

It's a hard diet to follow at first but you do learn how to cope. There are lots of foods I miss, but I love seeing my feet look normal again, and not having to take Prilosec on a regular basis for stomach pain. I experimented by going back to eating gluten for a day and all my symptoms returned. I cut out gluten again and it took a week or so for my symptoms to subside, but once again they resolved when I stuck to a gluten-free diet. I also had a mysterious rash for years that no dermatologist could cure, and after cutting out wheat, that went away too. I am convinced wheat is the culprit for these problems, and so I'm committed to eating gluten-free.

Wheat and grains were added to the human diet late in our evolutionary process, so pushing a diet that relies on "whole grains" for our carbs may not really be the ticket to good health for a lot of people.

It would be helpful if this was addressed on this website as a valid dietary consideration, just like eating low sodium or low cholesterol...

I have celiac disease, and I cannot eat gluten at all. I have similar symptoms to this Kchapman43. The main difference is that it's like living with a stomach virus when I have a small amount of gluten in any form (that even means no malt - no bottled frappacino's for me!). It's a really hard diet to follow, and it makes watching what I eat that much harder. It seems like it would be easier to lose weight, but some of the gluten free options are worse for you than regular wheat products.

I have not been tested, but Gluten intolerance runs in my family. Some symptoms are constipation, serious weight gain or loss, and overall not feeling quite well. I know when I have had a lot of bread because I will gain 4 pounds over night, and its all inflamation! That is the weight gain part for me. Until I get tested, I have been almost avoiding gluten foods, so a gluten meal plan would be a huge help for me just starting out!

I suppose there are so many different food intolerances and limitations that people deal with, eg diabetes, that it would be really complicated to provide meal plans for them all, but I've noticed over the time I've been on SP that the user-entered foods are growing rapidly, which makes it easier to track gf or dairy-free foods and build your own meal plans to your own specific requirements.

No matter how slowly you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch.

I am a Chiropractic physician and have a wellness practice and love to do nutritional counseling. You would not believe how many people need to be gluten and dairy free, or at least dairy as a condiment only in very small amounts. We do need to create weekly menus. It can be done. I follow it most of the time. I can eat simply and don't have a problem with it. I don't require a wide variety of deliciously seasoned foods to please my palate. My husband, on the otherhand is a New Orleans cooking freak. He loves spices and variety. He has learned to cook without gluten most of the time. If he wants to thicken something he will use potato flakes, or a little cornstarch. Mostly he just cooks it down a little. My diet is mostly meat and veggies. An occasional slice of flax and millet bread by Sammie's Bakery works well. Lots of nuts and seeds in moderation make for good snacks. We should all contribute ideas like this and see of spark people won't work with us. I like their Idea and plans, but their breakfast suggestions are almost completely wheat and dairy. I just started but I can understand the frustration. I just try not to buy or consume anything that comes in a box, bag, or a can.

I also think it would be nice to have dairy/gluten free options on the meal plan. I do eat some dairy/gluten but try to keep it to a minimum which is one of the reasons I have never used the SP meal plans.

I am not yet where I would like to be, but I am no longer where I was.

I was hoping spark would have gluten and dairy free menu plans. I need to eliminate both and a menu plan on spark would be an excellent thing to have! I believe that more people will try eating a gluten free diet when they get the information about symptoms of having gluten intolerance.

I have to live gluten-free, but I had stopped tracking food in SP because I was frustrated with having to enter just about everything I eat. It would be great to have a gluten-free meal plan in place. I have decided to go back to tracking food because I see others have entered foods I eat, and also because I have a very high protein diet, and I need to change that. My eating pattern is not standard, but the trackers really help me see what I am doing to my body..

Maybe we should design one and post it ourselves?
I do a weekly meal plan every week that I'll share in my blog page. It would probably just take a little work to plug them into the nutrition tracker and get those stats.

I would also LOVE a gluten free menu option, I have Celiac so I have to follow a gf diet. The nutritional differences between GF and Wheat based foods are significant. Like Whole Wheat bread can be a lot lower in calories than gluten free bread and also significantly different fiber levels etc. Would help a lot if there were even that option to choose in the search foods area. emoticon
