thanks so much for the support and "just keep swimming" is one of my friends and my favorite quotes. i am starting to walk with more power now instead of just walking. before i thought walking was walking. But if you engage your abs, get your arms pumping, and really move then its a true work out.

Your post reminded me of one of Susan Powter's books. I don't remember which one. She says that anyone can do some kind of exercise. Even someone in a wheelchair. If you can only move your arms-flail those suckers around. If its only your legs-get them moving. You may never be able to do traditional sit ups or crunches very well, but do what you can and focus on the parts you can move.

And now I'm reminded of Dory in the movie NEMO when she says, "Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming...." You get the idea. Do what you can and just keep doing it! Good luck!

DH means Dear Husband.

Your boyfriend can be reassured that roughhousing is not going to hurt you -- in fact it will make you feel better.

i know this is going to sound funny but i see a lot of people use "DH" what does it mean?
And I know how you feel. my boyfriend treats me like i'm fine china. he's too afraid to roughhouse with me because he's afraid hes going to hurt me. and i'm like "i went through a spinal fusion, i'm tougher than you are" lol as my family so endearingly calls it "im steal reinforced"

I know what you mean. My DH tries to understand but gets frustrated when I can't do things he thinks I should be able to do.

We can do this. We can get stronger and more flexible, but we have a spinal fusion so we won't be as flexible as people who don't. So what. We can be the best we can be.

Life is Good.

I don't even try sit ups. I do the best crunches I can and am slowly increasing my reps. I do planks and other exercises the same way - the best I can. On bad days I don't do any. But I am slowly improving and feel much better and more flexible than I was in June when I joined SP. Don't be so hard on yourself. As long as we are moving and keep trying we have to improve. PS I don't run - my back can not take the pounding. I hurt for days after running so I don't.

Life is Good.

So how do you handle working your abs? i can't do serious situps or sometimes proper crunches and my back is sometimes too weak to do plank or dolphin pose.

I have a spinal fusion also and know what you mean. I have been in SP for 5 months and by going slowly, doing the strength and stretching exercises slowly and carefully I have become much more flexible. I still have pain on some days, but just skip a day and get back into the next day. I'm not in a race or contest of any kind. Slow but surely I'll become more flexible. emoticon

I had scoliosis when i was younger and i had the spinal fusion done. Now i have 2 rods hooked and screwed to my spine and it really limits what i can do. (at least in my head i think it does). It is hard for me to do crunches, and i can't do pilates or some yoga, and when i run it hurts. My back is one of the major things keeping me from getting fit. i would like some help getting around that. I don't know how to exercise without my back hurting. Any tips? i really want to get over this.
