yet another known source of fiber is consuming chia seeds, just 2 table spoons of chia seeds already give you 20% of your daily need in fiber, it says "using of just 1 tablespoon chia seeds by type 2 diabetics prove a decrease in their blood glucose levels."

Have you tried Kefir?

Kefir is a great source of minerals like calcium & magnesium, & phosphorus, which helps the body utilize carbs, fats and proteins for cell growth, maintenance & energy. You can try Kefir over fruit or cereal, in your morning smoothie, or straight from the bottle..there is even Frozen Kefir. Kefir contains different types of beneficial bacteria than does yogurt, but tastes almost the same....it is also easier to digest and helps with fatigue. Has vitamins and minerals,protein..a good probiotic. It helps keep diabetes under control...kefir has naturally occurring sugar and can help in regulating blood sugar levels...you see when blood sugar levels drop, people feel an urge to eat. Kefir can eliminate those urges. The original plain Kefir by Lifeway is the best....add berries to sweeten

Skip the meal replacement shakes....a diabetic needs fiber and water to maintain healthy sugar levels......eat real food.....maybe educate yourself on foods...I have posted over 1000 tips on foods here on Sparkpeople...look in the Community Section...Secrets of Success....Living with diabetes......I have an A1C level of 5.6 now for over 3 years and I lost over 100 lbs so I know what I do works because I remain steady and have my diabetes in control.

the best medicin is activity indeed and normal simple healthy food

for example:
sometimes I see people drinking a Coke light while eating a hamburger... I am sorry, I miss the point

after tring many kinds of meal replace ment they leave me hungry and sugar high so i'm lost as far as weight loss lost 25 pounds and froozen there i just swing up and down 5 pounds. TRyed the increase food intake some less food no materr what i do im stuck at around 280

there is a movie on diabetics and eating habits, I am not sure if this is all true but the movie makes you believe that when you eat raw food you will solve number 1 and 2 type diabetics. The movie is called: "Simply Raw - Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days".

We use the Atkins shakes here. My husband is diabetic, but I'm not - just on the same diet to lose weight. Our endocrinolgist says it's fine to use the Atkins as a meal. They're pretty tasty to me, and aren't soy-based, which is a big "plus" in my book. That stuff is just Not Healthy.

I frequently buy the bulk pack of vanilla at Sam's and flavor it with DaVinci sugar-free syrup (sucralose). I get lots of variation that way. The Vanilla Atkins isn't bad by itself, though. I just like the blueberry, or pancake batter, or banana, or .......

Many diabetics relying more so on food and activity for sugar control find that eating fiberous foods that take longer to break down, digest, and convert into glucose are critical for them. Also, having a balance of carbs, protein and fat at each eating event is important whether it be a 30 to 50 calorie snack or an 800 calorie meal. In general, the quicker and easier a food breaks down mechanically the quicker and faster it is available for metabolism.

Are you taking about a prepared, off the shelf shake? Or, are you talking about a smoothie or veggie juice type of thing?

There are a number of "green" juices that are kale and veggie greens based. These tend to be lower in calories and sugars although a lot of fiber is already mechanically broken down for you. Often, any one of a number of protein sources are added to the mix.

If you're talking of more of a smoothie based shake....It would seem that beginning with a Greek yogurt, with live cultures, as a base would be beneficial; to get your metabolic slowing action in, I would go with the full fat and no lower than 2%. And then, you would have to be careful that you are not making the entire mix too high in fruit, even blue berries. Another tatitic with the smoothie thing is to make it an ice (water) based concoction similar to healthier slurpee. The ice fills without calories, slows down mechanical and bio-chemical break down, and so on.

I have had type 2 for 10 years now (and MS as well), and the time has come for the belly and high readings to GO. I am starting the New Lifestyle Diet tomorrow and will be at my goal weight by my 50th birthday in December. I've tried the product, and I like the taste and the fact that it is low carb/low sugar.

i too am diabetic ...i wanted to take a meal replacement shake also..but it was myh understanding that meal replacement shakes were hard on your kidneys....so i did not try them...anyone tried them? emoticon

sorry..really just "Lurking" BUT thought I would mention that even SLIM FAST has
2 of their products (ready made drinks) in a new LOW CARB formula.. vanilla and chocolate
and either is only 4 gm carbs (I think) -- way down from the 24-25 (??) gm in the "regular versions"

I have found that being a diabetic replacing a meal with a shake only can be hard on my levels. I would suggest you use them sparingly at first until you know how your body will respond to them.

I have tried the Special K replacement shakes. They were pretty good, But my small town market doesn't seem to carry them. I hate that Glucerna and Boost are so expensive. I am sure the diet shakes have too many something in them that wouldn't work for us Type II-ers.

I also have diabetes, and even aftter losing 118 lbs I still cannot get off insulin, and probably never will. I liked the choc glucerna shakes - sometimes I blend them up with a bit of ice. However, a shakes wasn't enough so I also have fresh fruit or a snack bar along with it. Seems to work for me.

Have been having a ton of issues with my Type II diabetes. Meal replacement shakes have helped control my levels a lot. I have been using Optifast shakes

My mom is diabetic and drinks glucerna and ensure for breakfast sometimes. If you want to make a smoothie I would suggest using blueberries and fruits with lower carbs. Also use soy milk because it has less carbs than regular milk. It probably depends on your glucose reading before eating...My smoothie is 38 carbs. I use: 4 oz plain soy milk, 1 tb peanut butter, 2 tb ground flax, .5c greek yogurt, and a serving of fresh fruit.It's also great to add in some spinach (you can't even taste it).

There are a lot of variations so you can of course make your own. I would suggest asking your doctor specifically about using them to cut down on medicine. Good luck!

Hi there, this is Scott Ewart,and I have taken the challenge of losing weight and getting more fit.

And I noticed that having diabetes becomes a lifetime battle since progression to find an unyielding solution is still off the horizon. Since a sudden raise in blood sugar can result to serious health conditions, having meal replacement shakes for diabetic is a way to cut down the amount of medicines to take.

Has anyone of you here tried taking shakes as meal replacement?
