I am a very picky eater and have a family of them as well. I also have lots of food allergies.
It is easier to list what I eat!
I have learnt to make meals that we can all enjoy using several pots!
- Stir fry with meat and veggies cooked separately.
- Salad with all veggies on the side and everyone adds their own.
- Shepard's pie in muffin tins so we have different meat and toppings (always make lots to freeze as well)
- I will have my slow cookers going on weekends to make my meals, freeze and take out when I want them.

I don't like things that have a mushy texture and find that most dark leafy greens fall into this category when cooked. I bury them in other dishes or barely blanche them.

I spent most of my life being accused of being a "fussy eater,: but it wasn't until recently I discovered why: I can't handle FODMAPs or most nightshades. They make me miserably ill. When I wouldn't "eat my veggies." it was attributed to pickiness. Well, yes, I guess I WAS picky! I picked things that didn't make me sick!

Well. Nevertheless. You might try some different seasonings and cooking methods. Rather than trying to force yourself to eat a wholly different food, maybe you can expand your tastes to other flavors first, and then apply what you like to other foods. If your reaction to those other foods is just "I don't like it", that won't help much. But if it's more something that really does make you physically sick, you might consider one of the elimination diets to see where the problem lies. If you DO like some of the flavors, perhaps those can then be incorporated into foods you haven't previously eaten. Maybe the new mix of flavors won't put your palate off so much!

Very fussy eater and also careful to remain gluten free, which is not being fussy per se but helps me stay feeling well.

I am picky. If I had to eat beans, I would gag. Because I can relate to not wanting to eat things I don't like, I never force my kids to eat things they don't like.

Maybe try things different ways. My daughter doesn't like carrot sticks, but will eat a few shredded ones on a salad.

Sometimes, (like with the stir fry you made) you can be surprised.

I am an incredibly fussy eater. I have issues with certain textures and smells. I just cannot convince myself to eat certain things. It's not really a problem until I go out to eat.

I'm a picky eater as well. Most of the healthier recipes that are trying to give you alternate ingredients if you don't like the original. Most of the time I don't like the alternative ingredient(s). If I can't stand the taste of something the first go 'round, then I'm not having a second attempt at it. That leaves me kinda screwed...

I like some vegetables but mostly from a can. I can eat raw carrots and broccoli but they have to be steamed to where they're not crunchy. If the carrots are not cooked at all or still crunchy, it tastes like perfume to me. I like spinach in a can but I'd eat it raw if cooked. I'd also eat it in a salad with other lettuce. I don't like tomatoes (though technically a fruit) at all unless its already in a sauce, like marinara and of course ketchup. Lol. Don't like olives, onions most of the time and not raw, cabbage, etc. Its easier if I'm asked if I like something, haha.

I like certain fruits too. For example, I love yellow bananas, black red seedless grapes but when they're sweet, pomegranate, green of the kiwi, and others.

I like some meats. If its beef then I like it ground or a steak (med rare). I don't like hamburgers/burgers. I also like ground deer meat. I like chicken but the white meat and cooked in different ways. As far as pork goes, I like: ham, pork chops but only cooked with a certain seasoning, pork loin, and sometimes bacon but that's only if I've got a hankerin' for it. (I'm from TX and I do use it sometimes, lol.) Turkey is good sometimes, too.

I don't like fish other than tuna but that's from can with water. My tuna fish "salad" contains the canned tuna, light mayo made with olive oil, egg whites and a little bit of the yellows, and a bit of salt and pepper to taste. It makes me a sandwich.

Haha, this one time I was in China and had to eat chicken cartilage. It actually wasn't that bad flavor wise, but it was definitely the freakiest food texture I've ever experienced.

I myself am not a picky eater. The only thing I'm not very fond of is citrusy/sour stuff. My fiance's nephew is a ridiculously picky eater. He's a bean pole and refuses to eat or drink anything that doesn't have a pound of sugar in it, lol. But now that he's living with us, he eats whatever the heck we fix, and he better not complain about it. When he's a grown up and moves out on his own, then he can decide what he wants to eat. :P

YellowDahlia, I looked at your sweet potatoes & turnip greens post. I've discovered I liked sweet potatoes (especially dehydrated) but I'm not ready to try the turnip greens just yet. Can you dehydrate turnip greens??? Wouldn't THAT be great? Maybe it would be like seaweed?

I am trying at age 56 to enlarge my food choices. The good part about being a fussy eater is how quickly I can go thru a buffet line. No to lobster, shrimp, no pasta salads of any kind, nothing with fat, onions, peppers or even black pepper in it. I have to leave the room when DH even OPENS a jar of salsa, the smell irritates me that much. I never used to like mustard, but now I will put a few dots on a hot dog or burger. No sweet pickles, only kosher dills. I tried raw cauliflower at age 50 ( a piece the size of a pea) and found out that I LIKED it. Tried asparagus in my 30's and liked it. Not too crazy about the dark greens either. Broccoli is okay raw or cooked. I will only eat scrambled eggs with cheese, no slimey whites allowed. I don't like chunks of cooked tomatoes in foods like spaghetti sauces or chili. I can eat raw zucchini & squash but not cooked (slimey). I've found that I adore trying different cheeses at upscale restaurants. I like most fruits, but can't figure out why people like to eat pomegranate seeds. (which I tried last year). Tried eggplant twice and thought it smelled and tasted bad. I enjoy cooking food , but often end up cooking items for others that I won't even taste.

I am not sure that I have exactly the same issues you do since I love fruit, but vegetables are another matter. I am experimenting with different recipes that change the texture of vegetables that I find aversive - for example, broccoli. I hate raw broccoli and most cooking methods aren't much more palatable. However, I found out over the summer that I like grilled broccoli, because the texture is completely changed! I don't have a grill, but I replicated the effect in my oven. I have also had luck with baking kale "chips." I don't know that these are foods that I would ever crave necessarily, but since getting the nutrients is very important to me, I don't mind eating them when they're prepared in a way that changes the texture of the raw vegetable. Just a thought. :)

I feel for you! My hubby is extremely fussy, and it makes dinnertime very difficult in our house! I have two young daughters, and it is hard to raise them to have a varied palate when they see daddy doing his own thing when I cook a healthy, or unique dinner...then I'm stuck with tons of leftovers and end up giving in to their hamburger/hotdog/mac-n-cheese tastes for months on end!

Here's to a new start in the new year, and lots of attempts at trying new foods!

I am also an extreme picky eater, there are not that many foods I am willing to eat, and the list seems to be shrinking instead of expanding. It's nearly impossible to go on a healthy diet, and I'm struggling with that issue trying to get started. I used to have some success with Weight Watchers because I could just count the points and eat what I want. Now that they've changed the program, all the stuff I will eat are high in points. So it's back to the drawing board. Like others have said, eating food loke a normal person causes me to gag. I still remember back in high school eating at a friend's house and eating spaghetti and meat sauce. It wasn't that it tasted bad, but I could only choke down so much of it and then I gagged. I was so embarassed, but they thought I had just swallowed wrong like you do sometimes, so I got off the hook. I've gone to great lengths to avoid situations where there is food I won't eat, made up explanations like allergies or special diets or whatever. At my age now I'm starting to tell (some) people that I just don't like food. Most of what people snarf down and drool over doesn't even register as being edible to me. Anyway, it's good to know there are others like me, but I wish we could have a diet plan for picky eaters that could help with weight loss and also be more healthy than what I'm doing now.

I am so relieved to hear there are others like me out there! It becomes awkward in social situations, even lunch with co-workers brings up uncomfortable questions about what I eat. I did try to eat some of my daughter's squash casserole at t-giving - I had resolved to take a bite and not concentrate on what I was chewing or tasting, just trying to act like a normal person at the dinner table. Did not work. I almost made gagging noises in front of everyone. Managed to grab my water glass and wash it down, but I know my face gave me away. I WANT to like veggies & fruit! Why can't I??

I never realized I was a picky eater until I went away to school for the first time. I'd walk into the dinning hall and go "Don't eat that, don't eat that, don't eat that."

I think part of it comes from not having any food allergies and being terrified that I will eat something I am deathly allergic to, so I tend not to eat things I know I'm not allergic too.

Also, a huge part of it is that my palate is so bland. Growing up the staples of my diet were pork chops, chicken or steak and potatoes, mixed frozen veggies or perogies and basic spices. I'm used to very bland foods so I tend not like many things with different spices.

It seems like a hopeless battle. I have tried tasting and introducing new things to my palette, but I haven't really been able to add many more things to my list of acceptable foods. I try to cook healthier things for my family, taste them regularly but most of the time - the smell alone makes me gag. Add to this my texture issues. I could never eat a tomato.. too slimy and disgusting ... but I have no problem with tomato juice, paste, sauce, ketchup etc. Same with something like an orange. Pulp free oj is fine but I could never eat an orange wedge.

I think there are a few things that you could do. One is to make lighter versions of foods you know you love. Add veggies or reduce the amount of oil, salt, meat, etc.

Second, you might look at some of the cookbooks for fussy eaters. The Sneaky Chef by Missy Chase Lapine is all about taking dishes that kids already love and making them healthier.

Thirdly, if you have a style of cooking or flavors that you know you like, experiment by cooking other foods in that style. If you don't like something prepared one way, try it prepared in a different way.

Sometimes it just takes trying something a few times before you decide that you like it.

PAMELA I am with you. I will eat most things, but it depends on the preparation.

About 2 years ago, i was extremely one minded when it came to food. i ate chicken, beef, ground turkey, some fish, peas, carrots (raw), cauliflower (raw), rutabaga (came from a czech heritage and my grandma always had this and kohlrabi in the house), sweet and sour cabbage (as long as my grandma made it), celery (raw), and some lettuces.

The last two years I did a massive jump in my diet. Through my chiropractor I learned how the SAD doesn't work in a healthy lifestyle since it is chock full of processed foods with GMO's, additives and preservatives and SUGAR. i met my raw food chef through my chiro and opened up my world to super healthy living food. Who knew there was a world out there that needed exploring? The first basket of food that she prepared for me scared me beyond anything. There was spinach, zucchini, beets, and green smoothies in that basket. i didn't eat that stuff. I didn't "like" that stuff. How could one small portion of a kale salad be filling enough for me. I will admit the two weeks, i had to supplement with some of my cooked meats to feel full. By the third week, I was actually able to stretch some of the smaller servings into two as I was getting full.
The first bite of raw veggie lasagna was awesome. I was eating zucchini and eggplant. She made a marinara sauce and noodles from zucchini (which became a favorite). The desserts she made were awesome. Just like desserts of any kind, they had to be eaten in moderation, but they contained NO SUGAR. Don't get me wrong, they were sweet but sweetened with things that were low on the glycemic index. I had raw cheesecake that is made from cashews or macadamias, I had chocolate pudding made from avocados and raw cacao powder and dates to sweeten it. For my birthday she made me a raw tiramisu.

So my dear SP friends, it is not that you do not like veggies or fruit. It is the fact that whomever prepared it for you or how you prepare it yourself is not to your liking. I am not saying in any way to go raw. It is a lifestyle that works for me and I am absolutely loving the benefits it has for my energy level, sleep, and hair nails and skin. All my levels such as cholesterol, bp, and triglycerides are all in the normal range. I am not at my goal weight yet and have quite a ways to go, but I am on the journey to being healthy which means 100% function of body, mind and spirit with out disease.

So give it a chance. Challenge yourselves to buy a fruit or veggie that you never tried before. Search out recipes on SP and other sites and find a new way to prepare them. You may surprise yourself. The SAD (standard american diet) is really a sorry diet. The new food plate (old pyramid) is a joke,. Pizza will never be a vegetable no matter how you slice it.

i was a picky eater. ask my parents. But I grew up and challenged myself to try new things and found some new loves.

Your body will thank you for it. TRUST ME.

Yep..I am 41 and I don't eat meat and there are alot of veggies I just don't like and very few fruits I do like...so I have a hard time eating right. I snack instead of have meals and I try to have a fruit every day but it is hard! The stuff I do like isn't much (and it's not good for you) so I get bored with food fast! Too bad I still eat it anyway...lol..or I would be very thin.

I cannot handle salads, most raw veggies. Luckily I don't have a problem with them if they're steamed.

I didn't like Chinese food until I was in my 30s! So I think there's some possibility that if you keep trying things a little at a time, you'll eventually find certain foods palatable.

As for those of us with texture problems, there are food therapists. Sounds odd, but they've really helped my nephew.

Lose the weight sensibly, steadily and without deprivation. Being fat is hard. I want a new hard.

Fussy one here!! I don't care for fish, most berries, some veggies, absolutely no spinach, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, or cauliflower. NO oatmeal unless it's a granola type cereal bar or an oatmeal cookie. There is so much more. Luckily I have a family that is not picky lol

I eat just about anything but DO understand the texture thing. I'm the cook in the house so have tried to ease vegetables into every meal. I slice cucumber and put it on a turkey sandwich for lunch. It gives it a crunch. We used to have a candy dish. I now fill some small dishes around the house with single grapes. Easy picking and an easy way to add fruit. Hang in there. One step at a time.

I too am a fussy eater. My problem is also texture AND I don't like too many vegetables. Whenever I change my eating habits to reflect a healthier lifestyle I end up getting bored with the food and reverting back to the good ole carbs. I don't eat any seafood, the texture of eg whites gross me out, etc. It becomes very difficult.

I have lived with a f us say eater for a little over 20 years (but who's counting). Slowly but surely. If it's macs and cheese put in some tomatoes for yourself. I'd it's pasta, add broccoli and chicken...or shrimp. Take an adventure. It's fun

I am a really picky eater, I can't eat the same thing multiple times. I usually say I eat what kids eat, its always tastier, easier to prepare, and cheaper... One problem though it has alot more calories!

Oooh boy! I am the QUEEN of picky eaters. I don't like any meat that has bone, grissle or fat in it. I only eat ground beef, hot dogs, some sausage, chicken (boneless breast) and turkey breast ONLY. I'm a texture eater. If there's a bad texture in my mouth, I spit it out and can't eat any more (example being, getting a piece of fat from a chicken breast), I will spit it out and can't finish the rest of the chicken breast because it has made me sick. I also don't eat anything that lives in water. The only kind of that stuff that makes it inside of this mouth is a crab rangoon (drool), and my one fish oil capsule per day.
My husband has been doing competition BBQing now for a year and makes pork butts, briskets, chicken thighs, and bbq ribs every weekend to practice for competitions, and I don't like ANY of it! I guess that could be a good thing for me. But ya... I'm pretty picky ;)

I was definitely one of the pickiest people I knew of. My main pointer to share is that just because you don't like a food you try for the first time, try cooking it in a different way! I saute a lot of veggies on the stove in a pan with a little bit of olive oil. Asparagus, green beans, brussel sprouts etc are good topped with a little bit of parmesan cheese. I also like to grill a lot of vegetables. I got a grill pan and have even grilled cubed sweet potato.

I'm a very picky eater. It is mostly due to my allergies though so I have to really watch what I eat and there isn't much out there I am able to eat anymore. :( I got to where fresh veggies are the safest thing for me to eat so I pretty much live on vegetarian-like meals for the most part. Meats cramp my stomach something awful so I avoid them mostly but when the family has something with certain meats (fried chicken or pork chops, steak or burgers.. or roasted chicken/turkey) I'll pick at some of it. In order for it to not hurt my stomach so bad though, and to be able for me to get past the textures and weird slimy/stringy/veiny/etc bits in them I have to have them very overcooked to where they are very dry. I don't know what it is about it but it doesn't hurt my stomach as bad that way LoL Even then it's still hard for me to eat meat because of all the weird things in it and I'm made fun of because of how I pick at it :(

Before the meat and seafoods and such hurt my stomach, I absolutely would not touch a ton of foods (mostly game animals from dad hunting and various seafoods). I wouldn't eat it still even if I could now days though.

Hi Chrissy,

It definitely is a challenge to change the way we look at food. I grew up in the Midwest, as did my parents, where a meal is meat and potatoes. Before I got married 5 years ago, Mom started working on trying new foods, and I have kept it up on my own. (I too am in my 30's.) I have found that along with new foods, there are new spices to use beyond garlic, onion, cayenne, chili powder, paprika, and salt. An example is that I found a beef recipe that called for smoked paprika, which imparted a new feature that I really like. I have roughly 40 different spices in my pantry now. Also remember that if you have opportunity to use fresh herbs, food will have a 'deeper' flavor than using dried herbs.
I think that your victory is on the right track, one food at a time. As the amount of foods that you like grows, the ones that you may not like are not a big deal. I have found that I do not like egg dishes, such as souffles, even though I will eat eggs individually.

I have found going to a small farmers market and braving trying new items has expanded my palate. My daughter and I both fell in love with a new squash this fall called delicata squash.

**Newbie here :)

I am a big time picky eater. I'm getting better as I get older. I will try things at least where I wouldn't even do that when I was younger. I'm not a breakfast eater, I just don't like it. So I started doing this TaiSlim where you drink a shake in the morning and one at noon. I at least am getting the nutrients I need. Calories are only 163 each shake and I am still full at lunch and "just right" hungry for dinner.
Now, dinner is my problem. I hate to cook mainly because I'm not good at it and the things I do make (amazingly I might add) are super fattening. Like pot roast with gravy and potatoes and carrots, or meatloaf with gravy and potatoes. Or I'm tired from work and I want fast. So through the drive thru I go. If I do make something at home, sometimes it is tacos or spaghetti. I'm not a big chicken eater, sometimes I will make fried chicken, or teriyaki chicken. I am just starting to take an interest in trying to learn to cook fish. My knowledge isn't that good about it, so it is slow. Mostly I like fried stuff. As far as veggies go, I like broccolli and cauliflower, string beans. I love tomatoes. But that's about it. I'm alone too, so that doesn't help in dieting. I just reason stuff out that I don't have a hubby or little kids to cook for, so a couple tacos at the drive up or a quesadilla is ok. I can't stand bell peppers, cucumbers or radishes.

Class reunion coming up and my son is graduating from college. My goal is to be able to buy a new outfit to wear to both occasions.

For me, it's the fact that there are a lot of foods I REALLY!!! don't like and I've found that most of the recipes here on Spark call for them, so I just omit them or try to exchange the item.
Here is just a sample of the foods I don't like:
mayo, mustard, cooked bell peppers, radishes, celery, and the only way I can even think about eating onions is if they're caramelized.

I used to be a fussy eater. I didn't even try salad until a few days before my twenty-first birthday. Then I decided to stop being a wuss and start eating properly. One thing that I found really helpful was experimenting with new recipes. I would pick up a cool cooking magazine (I didn't have access to a public library in the country where I was living) and choose a bizarre recipe, and then try to make it myself. I would make an event out of tracking down the ingredients, preparing the food and serving it to my friends, and when I put so much labor (and love!) into the food I found that I started to enjoy things like grilled radicchio, goat cheese, white asparagus, etc.! Go on a culinary adventure!

Stats: Female, 5'4", 28 years old.

Goal: From 152 (07/24/2011) to 125 by December, 2011. DONE! December 4th weighed in at 124. In 2012 I've been maintaining around 122, which is a thirty pound loss. My BMI has gone from 26.1 to 20.9 since following the Spark plan!

@jzinnert... I like making my cream sauces with low-fat or non-fat milk as a starter... definitely cuts down on fat and calories with just that substitution. Also, if they are cheese sauces you can use low fat cheese, although some of those don't melt as smoothly. If the sauce calls for sour cream or mayonnaise you can use low-fat yogurt for some or all of that (I like using greek for the higher protein content). These are just a few of the ways that I have found to make some of my creamy sauces a little healthier without cutting out the flavor.

I'm new at posting on message boards, so I hope I'm doing this correctly. My boyfriend is a very picky eater and likes foods with heavy, creamy sauces. Does anyone have any ideas on how to maintain the rich texture of the sauces, but cut down on calories? For example, he likes Alfredo Sauce and Buttery Sauces (like on Red Lobster's Shrimp Scampi). He's not big on Tomato Sauces. Any help would be greatly appreciated for both our waistlines! :o)

my best friend is extremely fussy when it comes to eating. for her it is mostly a textural thing. for examply, spaghetti sauce needs to be completely smooth - no chunks of tomato, onion, etc... she likes the flavor that the onions and peppers add, but they have to be strained out before she will eat it! I have found a way to make sauce for her that she enjoys - the onions, garlic and pepper are very finely minced and then sauteed until very soft, then add a bottle of tomato juice, various herbs, simmer on a low heat for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally... at the very end, add a dash of nutmeg. this is the absolutely BEST sauce I have ever had and you would never know it was tomato juice!

a lot of it is just adjusting your pallet. i grew up on burgers and mac and cheese and then ended up spending most of my life as a vegan/vegetarian. you have to try thing something like 15-20 times to adjust yourself to new taste. just a few bites of something enough times will help you learn to adjust to new taste

I'm not picky, but I cook for people that are.

Do you like spaghetti and meat sauce? If you do, brown a pound of ground turkey, and then finely chop a zucchini, red pepper, big handfuls of spinach, finely mince or shred some carrot, mushrooms, eggplant, onions, garlic (LOTS) whatever, just chop it fine, and saute with the ground turkey. Then, instead of using a jar of sauce, use two or three big cans of crushed tomatoes, and a small can of chicken broth. Let it simmer till all the veggies are nice and soft, about a half hour, and you've got something exactly like a really hearty meat sauce, only...mostly veg. Season it how you like, oregano, basil, chili flakes, a splash of red wine, whatever.

The key is chopping stuff fine, and letting it simmer till it kinda all melts together.

Another thing- same veggies, ground up in the food processor or mini chopper added into your normal meatloaf mix. Seriously, do like half the beef, and sub in roughly the same amount of veggies, plus your usual ingredients (egg, breadcrumbs, seasonings) and you're eating a half-veggie loaf. We've gotten as far as 60/40 veg/meat, and it still tastes like a really awesome, juicy, delicious meat loaf.

Try it in sloppy joes, chili, anything you can think of to sub out half the meat for a minced variety of veg. Sloppy joes stretch really well with black beans or chick peas, too.

I most certainly am a fussy eater, ever since I was a little girl. My issue is not really the taste but more so the texture of certain foods. I am not able to chew onions, peppers, tomatos or pickles, the half and half crunchy/chewy affect grosses me out, lol.

I have found one recepie that may help in the veggie intake process. So instead of mashed potatoes, one can have mashed cauliflower. I saw the recepie on "HealthyBitch.com", I haven't tried it yet, but plan on this evening. The site is mostly Vegan, I am not a vegan but think their information is helpful.

Ok so I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that, despite being in my mid-30s, I am and always have been a "fussy eater". Basically, I never really learned to enjoy healthy food, and I never really tried to be honest.

So my challenge, on top of the whole exercising etc, is not just to eat healthy but to find varied ways to eat foods I'd normally not even look at.

Today I had a teeny tiny victory when I made some stir-fried veggies with tuna. The dish was totally not something I'd ever have considered eating before, but it ended up tasting great. I used a small amount of sesame oil, mustard and the juice from one freshly squeezed orange for the veggies, and some no-salt middle eastern seasoning for the tuna.

I'd love to find others who might be facing similar challenges to swap ideas & suggestions.
