My aunt got the latest NutriBullet just the other day. We tried it out this evening (kale, spinach, beets, and apple juice as a base) and it was surprisingly good. This is her first time juicing, and she's really enjoying it. Now to figure out how to add this to my food tracker...

Little by little, step by step, day by day.

On the advice ofy podiatrist, I just bought a juicing machine. It is by Farberware and is a much CHEAPER verion of the Nutribullet. Does anyone have low salt version recipe for Spicy Hot V-8. I love the store bought stuff but it has way too much sodium. Also has anyone ever juiced mulberries? What did you put with them? I also have a bunch of blueberries and raspberries that are frozen and I need to do something with them. So any recipes will be a great help. Thanks.

I used the pulp left over from the juice in smoothies, vegetarian chili and quiches or fritattas.

Hi Everyone,

First , Happy New Years to everyone !

Well, my experience so far with juicing goes like this.

My husband ,who bless his heart is so supportive. He made me watch a movie called Fat, Sick and Nearly dead. He went out and searched for a Juicer for me as a surprise. He brought me a Nutribullet. I've never juiced before and I have been trying so hard to lose weight. It is so difficult when you are pre-diabetic. I eat pretty healthy and workout but no budge on losing weight. Which can be very frustrating. Being 5'3 and 219 lbs.. No bueno for the body.

So, I started off with Kale, Spinach fruit of my choice - fresh pineapple and coconut - a scoop of greek yogurt. I had it for breakfast... so far so good.. I had a fruit snack or veggie snack in between breakfast and lunch.

just a couple of days later.. I started juicing for lunch as well. I found that in a couple of weeks I went from 219 to 213.

I love the nutribullet because it just makes everything drinkable - no pulp. It uses all parts of the fruits and veggies. I also started doing research on what fruits and veggies I can mix together and what not to mix together and what may not be good for you like the seeds of an apple contains Cyanide and that fiber from the fruit that would otherwise be taken out as pulp , your body is using to help with weight loss. Love that. I also feel full when I drink my concoctions.

I learned about superfoods and also about organic superfoods such as maca powder and goji berries and chia seeds which are packed with Omega 3 which is so healthy for you. They combat diabetes because they slow down digestion , high fiber and Omega 3 for your brain, stronger teeth and bones so much more. I learned not to put too many fruits in my drinks. I also learned going to the farmers market and freezing my fruits and veggies is a huge budget saver. I even found a basket of organic bananas for only $1.

Now, I'm really getting into it, but .. yes there is a but.. I don't think I'm ready to do it for three meals a day. I tried it once and I got nauseous and massive headache because I didn't drink coffee and it was bad. It could all be in my head. I won't give up and hopefully one day I can do a full day of just juicing .

I do have more energy and went down a size and find juicing addictive.

I am not a number person.. so I wish an easy formula for counting my juice drink were available. Otherwise since I am drinking the whole fruit and the whole veggie and I am counting it as eating a whole fruit and a 3 leaves of Kale emoticon

Thanks for all the good information on here, great topic!!

I am starting to juice and appreciate all of your postings. Recently I read a book called the Gerson Diet, which I am going to follow to get rid of the auto-immune diseases. Juicing is part of the diet as well as eating lots of vegetables and fruits. I am hoping that my hands will not be twisted from RA and my MS will be gone too.

That's a great idea! No waste too! And as we all know..buying quality/organic fruits and veggies is not cheap! I've munched on the fiber left over..lol! But your idea is good. Some berries and fruits don't "juice" efficiently. So your idea works for me! Keep up the good work...and remember.....

We are gonna look incredible when we turn 80!!! LOL!!!

I do both. I make a juice in the morning and then throw the pulp into the blender with some greens and superfoods and voila! Juice AND smoothies! x

Hi! Good for you! Blending is great! Som fruits and veggies are better blended...I just bout blackberrys...strawberries ...and cranberries. Now cranberries are tart...but they contain so many incredible nutrients andantioxidants! And right now they are in season..and if you shop around...they are pretty cheap! Try throwing some into your blender...its the season for those little red berries! Good job!! Happy Thankgiving!...Scott.

Hi DREAM-DAILY,
Your opinions are always appreciated and welcomed! Ironically I just bought a blender to do exactly what you're refering to. I haven't used it yet but I'm excited to try some "smoothie" recipes and as you memtioned...it will provide the fiber and other nutrients missing in juice.
Also...I'm going to try some of the "better" protein powders in addition to almond milk...which was recomended by a nutritionalist. I am very excited to try this using berries and other anti oxidant ingrediants!
And thanks for the compliment. I just turned 61. I don't smoke, drink, and I excersise as much as possible (cycling and walking are my favorites but I also use hand weights 5lbs and aerobics too!) I plan to look a good as I feel and live for many more years!
Take good care and ....please....let me know how you're doing...ill share my recipes when I start blending! Peace and Prayers! Scott.

I know nobody asked my opinion, but I've always preferred blending fruits rather than juicing. It has a smoothie-like texture and you don't lose all the awesome fiber and other nutrients that you lose by throwing out the pulp when you juice. Keeps you nice and full!

You are doing awesome and juice is pretty darn good, but I just wanted to throw out my idea.

Good for you! Sometimes a video can shock us into action. One of my friends brother died of colon cancer at age 48. My own dad died of the same thing. I have been a health enthusiast since the 70s. My juicing has helped in every way...I would encourage you to try adding green beans as an ingrediant. I believe that green beans are well tolerated by almost everyone. Certain veggies you must be careful with. I had a problem with spinach. But small amts is the best way to try them. I also add some V-8 to help the taste and increase the volume.

Please pass along your sucess story to others. And...as u know... you don't have to buy the most expensive juicer. Some are better. But mine is over 15 yrs old and cost about $35-40. Congratulations on taking charge of your health. If you watch your calories...youll also lose weight over time!! Great job! Scott

Hi everyone!

I also saw Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and that movie is shocking and enlightening.

I bought a Hamilton Beach juicer for 50 bucks on Amazon and it is working well for me, so far.

Thanks for all the information about juicing!

Hi ZYLLAS,
Thank you for the info..I will check it out. I must admit, I am still a "juicing rookie" lol! I'm constantly tweeking my combination of veggies and fruit. Today I went to the farmers market and bought some locally grown purple grapes. I am conservative with fruits because of the high sugar content...but I have found thru research that "dark" berries and fruits contain important antioxidants exclusively. My favorite ingrediants are still green beans and carrots. And I admit..I add some V-8 for flavor and to increase the volume. I use frozen cranberries (sparingly) because I fresh aren't in season..but they should be soon! And...don't forget celery...while it isn't loaded with nutrients, it does add a nice flavor. Good luck! And thanks again for the link. Who knows...maybe we've found "the fountain of youth!" God bless. Scott

Hi Scott, I just became a juicer myself. Thank you for answering the question of calorie counting it really helps a lot. I recently watched Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead, it's all about juicing. Joe Cross has a great web sight with terrific juice recipes you should check out, it's http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/recipes. I think you will find it to be very beneficial. He answers a lot of question you may have about juicing. I hope this helps and thanks again for your calorie post!

God Bless!

Hi Cindy! Nice to hear from a fellow "juicer"! You have some great questions and concerns. I usually juice about 2 glasses 12-16oz. Each at a time. This helps to save an additional "clean up" which is a "chore" in itself! I'm still trying different combinations of fruits and veggies. As carrots go...I use about 3 large/ session. Yes you can get an orange "tinge" but only if you don't mix and you only juice carrots. Plus you can OD from too much vitamin A. ( not good for your liver) but 3 is ok . Then green beans are the best...they juice well and I think they balance out the juce with "tons" of great nutrients. I add 1 apple, 1-2 small or grape tomatoes, a lemon (or lime) grapes, strawberries 4-5, about 3 large celery stalks (geat flavor!) Maybe a little cabbage. I tried to find fresh cranberries...they'll be in season soon...but for now I bought a bag of frozen cranberries and a bag of frozen mixed "dark" berries. I thaw them in warm water first. And finally a little fresh pineapple ( a whole fresh one is only $3)
Now...whew..its a lot of work..but I limit the sweetest fruits because of the sugar. Its natural fructose...but you're right!! It boosts the calories. I don't know exactly how to ciunt the calories but if you take the calories for "fresh" from the daily tracker and reduce by 10-25% to compesate for the pulp....you should be close. I then finally mix in just a little V-8 juice and a "shot of 100% Cran-cherry juice. It is a lot of work but I end up with 2 days worth of juice. Another tip...I use a straw so I don't stain my teeth!!! (lol!) But I drink a whole glass between morning and afternoon. Then a very light dinner with more "protein" based foods and some carbs like bread or pasta.
This is just me! Everyone's different but I've experimented and this works for me! I've gotten to really love the taste and I think the calorie intake is reasonable as long as I don't snack on other things before dinner. And yes...I eat ice cream or something sweet after dinner. But the juice really helps control my appetite during the day. I have lost 10 lbs since I started juicing! I could not lose a single pound before this! I had prayed to God to help me and...my prayers were answered!.
It is a lot of work...and NOT CHEAP! but...I don't spend a lot on unecessary or prcoessed foods at the store..and there's still a "summer bounty" of fresh produce from local far markets! Als...try different things! But in small amounts till u see how they taste and affect your health!
I appologise for the "long story format"! Good luck and I hope all this helps. I can't tell u how much this has changed my life and kept me young. Let me know how your "juicing journey" goes and God bless! Scott. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi Scott,
Great information. Thanks for sharing. I add spinach to my juicing when I have it on hand. I will be sure not to have large quantities of spinach and continued amounts to cause build up. I did hear that if you consume too much in carrot your skin, especially seen on your palms, will turn orange.
I just wish I knew the calories of the juice in what I drink. Surely juice is lower in calorie than the whole that is being juiced. Any one know this answer and where to find the numbers so it's possible to be somewhat accurate in calculating calories during the day?
Maybe I am consuming too much juice. Can I save the juice in a container and and drink some later? So I don't consume so much at one sitting. How much do you all consume in one meal?
Cindy

Hi, I'm Scott...I just started juicing again. I turn 61 in less than a month and I was"reunited" with my juicer after I received some of my property my ex "allowed" me to have. (lol)! My stress level and blood pressure had been "thru the roof". 4 years on lisinopril for hi blood pressure didn't seem to change anything. I started about a month ago juicing my usual "favorites" carrots, green beans, celery, apples, grapes and tomatoes. I would add some V-8 for flavor. I thought I would try some variety and added spinach. I did not realize that it could cause a buildup of uric acid...I started having "gout symtoms" my elbows became enflamed and felt likebees were stinging them! I had been juicing huge amounts of spinach...after reading about gout and the foods that could cause it...it became clear what my problem was..
So I added strawberries...cut out the spinach and flushed my body out with a lot of water. I'm back to my "favorites" and doing wonderfully! My energy level is high and my blood pressure is almost normal! I'm feeling so much better I'm actually dating again! My weight is down by 8lbs in the last 2wks. I've had such great support thru my incredible Sparkfriends and I'm celebrating my 1 yr anniversary since joining...thanks to all of you out there for your help and support. emoticon Scott emoticon

I started juicing 3 days ago and already am seeing the benefits. I have horrible swelling on my legs and feet that I haven't been able to control for many years. In the last three days I can actually see my ankles and my calves look smaller. Weight loss is my primary goal; however, the health benefits are amazing. I have committed to a five day reboot (www.rebootwithjoe.com) and if it goes well I will do ten days then maybe fifteen days. I'm excited about the benefits of juicing and am not going to worry to much about the calories and such since my body will be using the nutrients in a better way instead of storing fat.

I had juiced for about a year and have gotten many others into the juicung habits. I have juiced it all I think. Recently I have fallen out of the habit and noticed my skin is not as awesome as it was before. On of my favorite was the liver cleanse- Beets, Celery, Carrots, and a lemon. The next day if you forgot you drank beets you may be in for a little surpise

You have all convinced me to return to juicing. Now to go shopping for veggies. Does anyone know what beets taste like in the juice? Are they sweet or do they taste like, well, beets?

After watching "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead", I bought an Omega 8006 single auger juicer. I turns at 80 RPM and crushes / squeezes the juice from the vegetables, and leaves a very dry pulp. On a side note, it will also make peanut butter, extrude fresh pasta, etc.

The thing behind juicing is that you would not be able to consume the amount of whole vegetables that would go into one large glass of juice. With the juice, you are getting benefits of a lot of vegetables, without having to chew so much. emoticon .

I am trying to put together a mix of healthy eating, supplemented with juicing. I cannot stick to "Just Juice", but I could probably do a Juice fast for one or two days per week.

I just got the Omega, also, and I am really enjoying it. I wasn't sure about juicing veggies but mixing them with fruit really is amazing. I am getting in my 'recommended' daily allowances of veggies for the first time in my life! I feel so much healthier now!

Hi! I just joined SPARKPEOPLE and so far I just learning the ropes. There is so much great information and motivation to be found here! I have ordered a juicer and it will be delivered Monday and I can hardly wait. After researching juicing for months, I decided to give it a shot. It's great to chat with others who are juicing and actually know how. Looking forward to next week!

I have been juicing for about 3 weeks off and on...the first week i did 5 days straight and lost 5.8lbs. I have been using the books and apps from Jason Vale at juice master dot com and WOW is all i can say. after the first 5 days my hubster got on board and we have been juicing 1-2 drinks a day and when he returns from his current road trip we are starting a 30 day juice reboot. He is t2 diabetic and got the all clear from his doc to try it as long as he monitors closely! I even juice for the kids in the morning...they love it!! my morning drink is 2 ribs of celery, 1/3 med cucumber, 2 green apples, 1 inch fresh ginger root, 1 pealed lemon and 2 stalks of kale. i juice that and then in a blender add the flesh of 1/2 avocado and 3-4 ice cubes with the juice and blend it until smooth...some days i add flax seeds, chai or hemp seeds and spirulena powders. You can't juice an avocado or banana but will add them via the blender!!!

glad i found this thread!! Fat, Sick and nearly Dead was a real eye opener!!!

i watched Sick, Fat and Half dead. It prompted me to give juicing a go I bought. Hamilton Beach wide mouth and find it has been doing a great job.
I have Celiac and am elderly (70) so issues with my tummy were common. I have been using the juice for the past month and love it. Makes my gut feel good. I am not hungry and swim 3 x week and attend exercise class 2x week.. Some days I eat mainly veggies with protein at supper. I have used the pulp in a veggie soup. The juice I use is the mean green and I have started getting my hubby on it a bit at a time. We will become more adventuresome as the summer progresses.
http://myjuicecleanse.com/juicer-recipes/mean-green-juice-recipes/
is one site to visit.
http://www.rebootwithjoe.com/
another and
http://juicerecipes.com/recipes/full-immunity-20 gives the caloric and vitamins and other stuff.
I have lost weight but my main desire was to feel better. Nails, sleep and moods are improved and energy high.I plan on juice during the day and a regular meal at nigh
tGood luck to all who try this form of eating/drinking.

calories in juices. count the food you juice in the tracker then subtract 4 calories per gm of fiber. I do this and just put the calories to subtract in the notes section.

Last week I purchased the Ninja Professional Blender NJ600 Series. I originally wanted the next step up, it has additional blender containers. Unfortunately the store I was making the purchase at did not carry it. Since I had a few other things I was getting I went ahead and made this purchase. So far it has done everything, even chopping up raw carrots. Now I don't feel so bad getting the one that was about $100.00 less expensive.

I make 2 serving of smoothies or protein shakes and freeze the second one.

I WILL look to smaller goals to accomplish the final goal!

I have only used the juicer a couple of times and tried to put the ingredients in the recipe maker section on Spark and then into my nutrition tracker. I also subscribe to Reboot and see their juice recipes, it would be nice if they included the calorie count.

I read about a site that will build the nutrition information: http://myphytos.com/build

Been juicing 3 times a day with a small lunch for 5 days now. I feel great. I've only been doing Joe's Mean Green from Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. Includes:

6-7 Kale leaves
1 whole cucumber
4-5 celery stalks
2 small-medium green apples
1/2 lemon
1/2 inch ginger root

For me, I had to fight through the first day getting all the juice down. Now I CRAVE it! Some weight loss, yes. But that is nothing compared to the energy I have now and just a general feeling of better health! I am going to work my way towards starting a juice fast. I don't want to set a day range. Just gonna start and see how long I go!

This is the juicer I have. I love it, haven't had any issues so far :)

I ended up taking the Sharper Image Juicer/Blender Combo back to the store. The pulp was very wet, so I knew it was not getting all the juice. One of my coworkers had a juicer his wife used 2 times and decided she did not want it so he sold it to me at an extremely low price. It is a Jack LaLanne and seems to do a pretty good job.

Yesterday I bought the Sharper Image Juicer/Blender Combo for under $85.00 including tax. I bought the combo because I do not have a blender and wanted something compact because I have a small kitchen.

I started following the Shred plan and you have to drink juice Not Made From Concentrate. I was having trouble finding it, especially at a reasonable price, so I decided to get a juicer. I have only taken it out of the box and washed it not used it yet.

My son went on a juice program for about 30 days until he got where he wants. Now he juices one day a week and eats what his family is eating. If his weight goes up, he will juice additional days. He always used the pulp for his garden.

My question is, other than cakes and compost any idea of how to use the pulp? And if so, how would you count the calories?

I bought the Ninja. While it is a good blender, when I tried to juice it was gross. I had to eat it with a spoon. i just bought a Omega VRT350. What a difference. I wil use the Ninja for smoothies only.

Yeah, I too recently watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I am attempting the juicing/smoothie for 10 days. It's not so much for weight loss as it is for health. My auto immune has been attacking my body...real similar to the story Joe shared, but not as severe. Enough for me to take notice and try detoxing. I am mostly juicing with an occasional snack (ie 1/2 a carrot or orange) So far I am have started day three, not sure if I have noticed a difference yet, but will keep going for the 10 days. The most difficulty thing I've been having is finding the mix of juices/ veg & fruit that I like. I am mostly a meat eating person. Since we live in a rural area, most of our meat is deer and pheasant. I will buy an occasional lamb from a 4H sale. It's just lately because of being so busy with work (past 2 years) I've been eating a lot of processed foods. That I think that is the issue. I plan even grinding my own wheat to make bread after learning about what has been put in food to keep you wanting more food. Yuck!

How is the nutritional value when only the foods juiced are put in to our "foods" diary? I put in the carrots, kale, tomatoes, beets, apples, etc., and it gave me a caloric number BUT I did not EAT these foods, I JUICED them. Does it not matter?

@ Nightfloat: Juicing allows you to take in MORE fruit and vegetable nutrients because you're essentially squeezing the most nutritious stuff out, leaving the pulp behind, so you can take in that much more fruits and vegetables (a platter full of produce in a glass). You couldn't eat that much of the whole fruits and vegetables in a day.

I have a Health Master and it is awesome! It really works! I did a juice det for 7 days and dropped 10 pounds! I am a certified chef and find it hard to only stay with juicing, so I have converted over to a whole foods diet and that seems to be working well for me. I still use my health master sometimes. It makes great smoothies, soups, and salsas. It is kind of expensive, but it is totally worth it. Thank you Montel!

I have a Vita-Mix, and I like it because the pulp remains in the juice. If the pulp is discarded i am afraid that some nutrients would go with it. The pulp also contains fiber which slows down absorption of fructose so my blood sugar does not go up as quickly. I use the V-M to make fruit & vegetable smoothies. I can get down lots more produce when I drink it.

Baby steps. Persevere.

My juicer just arrived! Yeah! I don't plan to only juice but I thought it would be a good way to get veggies and fruits in my body and for my kids.

This morning, we played and made a lot of concoctions - mostly good ones. LOL

I just watched Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead and really want to do a 10 day cleanse-- but NO idea how to begin. I was telling my housemate about it and he said-- I have a juicer in the basement-- never used... no idea what kind- but he said he thinks it juices whole carrots etc... I'm going to read your blog gameon123 and see how you did with your 9 days....

My 50 by Freakin' 50 Challenge begins August 8, 2012! My goal is to lose 50 lbs by my freakin' 50th Birthday- which is February 8, 2013! Let the challenge begin!

I am hooked on Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. I juiced (only) for 9 days and I so wish I had kept it up for longer (I blogged about it any case you are new to this idea) I'm trying to get motivated to do it again...bought the produce this past week and didn't juice at all!! It is a big change and I am just having trouble getting started again. I would LOVE to do a 30-day juice fast.
I have a Breville Fountain and love it, but the cleanup does kind of serve as a mental block (excuse!) for me. When I was juicing before, it would take me about 2 hours to wash and prepare all produce and prep it and juice 4 different juices and then clean up. It was better to do it all at once, but I might cut it down to only two different juices a day this time so I don't have that excuse of "time." I bought an awesome book called "The Big Book of Juices" by Natalie Savona. It has 400 juice recipes, beautiful color pictures and breaks down each juice by it's purpose (detox, energy, etc) I'm hoping i can get on the juicing tomorrow before my produce begins to go bad!!

Out of genuine curiosity - what's the point of juicing? Wouldn't just eating the fruits & veggies as they come be just as good, if not better? Wasn't that juicing movie essentially an infomercial? Again - genuinely curious here.

What do you mean by 'you want the pulp'? Do you mean you want pulp in your juice or the pulp from juicing down the fruits and veggies?

I am thinking about the Ninja because I want to have the pulp not just the juice. Anyone have any input on that?

I loved the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. It's extreme, but the information provided is priceless. That actually pushed me to get the Breville. Having the pulp shoot was was sold it. Have you seen that movie Forks Over Knives? It's streaming on Netflix right now. I recommend it. That's a disturbingly enlightening film.

It is a lot of information to think about isn't it? I have been researching for about a month after watching Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead and I finally broke down, and bought a Breville Compact Fountain Juicer. It was $100 and is the same brand that was used in the movie. I actually decided against LaLanne because people rated GE and Black and Decker (found at Walmart and way cheaper) better than that. The only difference is this is a smaller capacity and the cleanup is a little different as the pulp does not fall into a separate container. It stays inside around the outside of the blade basket. A little more of a cleanup, but not bad at all. I looked at the wattage, as more wattage, more power more juice squeezed, and also looked at speeds, as softer foods need a slower speed. The Breville is only 1 speed, but they say to just push the food down slower. Whether function or price is an issue, that is your main thing to focus on. I did really want to go with the GE juicer at Walmart for $49, but was already at best buy, darn it. Good luck!!!

There's a lot of juicers out there, but I would suggest the Breville Juice Fountain. It's about $150 but it's definitely a bang for your buck. I've tried the $70 warring pro juicer and it was okay but its no match for the breville. The Breville is 3 main components which makes it super easy to clean. As for books, right now I think that The Juicing Bible second edition is great. It gives juicin remedies for certain ailment and explains which fruit, vegetables, herbs and legumes do to help. Once you get started though you'll begin to go away from the recipes in the book and come up with your own. I made a citrus based juice recently with 3 oranges, 2 small fuji apples, 1 grapefruit with 3-4 handfuls of spinach and it tastes amazing while fighting off the common cold. Juicing is addictive. I'm interested in what juicer you get and how you like it.

I also just add up the calories as if I am eating the fruit and that is it. I drink carrot and beet juice every morning. I juice 1 beet and 4 carrots, so when i go to add up my calories I just type in like I ate the veggies or fruit.

Interesting question. I am in the same spot. I have read three different perspectives: 1) add up the calories of the ingredients (subtract 10% for the pulp), 2) add up the calories of the ingredients (add 10% if you are juicing parts you would normally discard such as apple cores and various peels (carrots, cucumbers, apples), and 3) add up the calories of the ingredients. I just go with #3 as it is simple and can't be that far off.

It is harder to determine what is really small, medium, and large. Good luck.

I've taken to making fresh juices every morning, and I've been looking for way to track the calories in each juice. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to find out the caloric estimate per juice? I tried using the Spark Recipe program, but I felt that it wasn't accurate.

Thanks for any suggestions!
