The dates on food packaging can be sell by dates, use by dates or expiry dates. Most of the time you will probably be ok eating something a little beyond the date on the packaging but really, do you want to risk food poisoning? I agree with 'If in doubt, throw it out'.

One rule for all food in my kitchen, "when in doubt throw it out" for me its always better to be safe then sorry. Food poisoning is not fun.

Yes I'd have to agree with Bi that if you smell it, you'll know whether it's good or not to eat. If it looks fine and smells fine, I'd eat it.

Depending on my moods, I'm either a "when in doubt, throw it out" or a "smells fine to me!" kind of girl. If it looks fine, cook it up. If it tastes weird, throw it out. Remember, past-date foods are not the ones you hear about making people sick. The worst you get with off food might be a little indigestion. It's the undercooked and the "prepared by a punk who didn't wash his hands" foods you have to watch out for.

How far passed is the date? If it was just a day or two ago, I'd still eat it. Also, is it a "sell by" date or a "consume by" date? If it's a sell-by, you've still got a couple days. If it's a consume-by, I'd go by how far passed the date was..

I wouldn't eat it.

I have some unopened turkey bacon in my fridge. The date on the package has passed. Do you think it's still good since it hasn't been opened? It still has to be fully cooked before eating.
