I made popcorn on the stove for my kids' afternoon snack often! Still one of my favorite foods!

I'm with the person who posted about eating real food. I eat popcorn cooked in canola almost every day. I just measure out 4 cups and then sit, enjoy, and make it last a while. It's a wonderful whole grain that is worth the calories! It's a great natural afternoon snack that truly holds til dinner. Plus, no matter what the numbers look like on paper, we all know there are certain foods that keep us from losing, like white flour, sugar, and just about any other refined sugar item. I've consistently found that popcorn doesn't keep me from losing. Hope this helps and I don't seem too rebellious... emoticon

i have actually found I prefer the 94% fat free popcorn better than the fat filled stuff now that I've been using it regularly.

I also like fake sugar syrups (for coffee and the like flavorings such as Da Vinci 0 calorie stuff) and I used to despise the stuff. You just get used to things and find they work better after a while.

heres to wishing you luck in finding what works!!

I totally agree with ANDORETH1. Dont eat it for a few days, then start with a different kind. I get the orville 100 calorie pack smart pop and its awsome! I eat them a lot :D (buy them at sams) and i often times put my favorite hot sauce on it :D

I air-pop and use I can't believe it's not butter spray as a flavor/liquid base to help stick on some butter flavored popcorn seasoning and salt.

My suggestion is put yourself on a bit of a popcorn "fast" and then switch. Otherwise you'll be comparing the two versions (and who can compete with mounds of butter?) instead of enjoying the healthier version on its own merrits (which is pretty darned good).

This is the easiest hard thing I've ever done.

I love popcorn. It never occurred to me to try to pop it on a brown paper bag. Guess I need to give that a try. And maybe I need to start thinking outside the box :-)

I forgot to mention in my previous post that you do NOT put any oil in the bag with the popcorn. Just put the popcorn kernals in the bag, fold over the top twice to keep the air/popcorn in, and pop away.

Popcorn is my absolute favorite food, especially movie popcorn drenched in oil/butter. So, I thought I was going to have to live without popcorn in my new, healthier lifestyle. I generally can't stand plain popcorn or air-popped corn. But I have found the perfect solution! Did you know you can pop corn in a plain brown paper bag in the microwave? Who knew!! But it works. You may have to experiment with amounts and times. I use a little more than 1/4 cup and microwave for 2 min 40 seconds.

After it's popped, spray it with I can't Believe it's not Butter spray. This tastes just like butter and it makes the salt stick. (I am not on a low sodium diet, so I use salt.) This popcorn is awesome, and it is making it possible for me to satisfy my popcorn cravings and still lose weight.

how about veggies and hummus/low fat salad dressing/low fat dip:

- cut carrot sticks with a wavy knife to give an interesting texture
- celery sticks
- thin pepper slices
- broccoli and cauliflower florets
- grape or cherry tomatoes

how about air popped popcorn but season it with your own spice mixes?

Like 2unhealthy, I have popcorn about once a week and make it on the stove almost exactly like they listed. We cook it in a bit of oil, but don't add any butter.
I look forward to it :)
Let us know if you find a good alternative.

Maybe try getting creative with your toppings. The air popped is good when you mix up what you add to it - instead of butter, try Emeril's Essence, a spice blend you enjoy, or my fav - truffle salt. Just make sure you add it while it's hot so that the spices stick.

As for a movie snack instead of popcorn, I like almonds or Junior mints. Hope this helps!

If you're going for volume popcorn is a good choice, but if it's just to munch how about goldfish pretzels (43 per serving) or baked snacks like Lay's baked potato chips or tortilla chips. There are also some good whole grain or wheat crackers (18 per serving for some) that give you an adequate serving size without going over the top. Unfortunately most snack foods put us over the top if not planned in advance.

It's not what I did, but what I do next that sets the course for success.

OK so I eat popcorn once every week or two. I make my own on the stove. 1/2 cup of kernels has 180 cals and 2.5 fat. It usually yields a large glass mixing bowl full (10 cups or so I'd guess).

I use 1 tbsp (or less) of canola oil and I count 1/2 of the amount in my tracker as my husband eats the other half. I don't add butter because we eat unsalted butter and it adds nothing except moisture to popcorn. Plus the oil used is enough. You can sprinkle any thing on you want like salt, pepper, sugar(sometimes I put 1/4 tsp or so in the oil for kettle like popcorn), garlic powder, chili powder, etc...and as long as you are not eating it every night once in a while won't hurt...and definitely stay away from the 94% fat free..anything fat free is just gross! I hope this helps.

My kids and I have a movie/popcorn night. We all love popcorn and eat lots of it. I have cut down my portions, but still seem to go over my calories and fat grams on those days. I do not like air popped or that %94 fat free popcorn. Yuk! I would rather not have it. I have tried some substitutes, but nothing I like is healthy. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

This chili is packed with flavor and fiber. Make a big batch for a crowd or freeze it in single-serving containers for up to 4 months.
Chef Meg made over this recipe. She halved the sodium levels by using no salt-added beans (you could also drain and rinse your beans). She also cut the fat and calories.
