Cut or shredded lettuce will break down more easily than whole or torn because the cells along the edge have been damaged instead of kept whole. This is why tearing lettuce is recommended. I agree with the previous poster. Buy a head of lettuce and cut or shred what you need, as you need it. If you wash the head of lettuce when you get it wrap it with a paper towel before you put it back in the bag. This will keep the lettuce crisp and avoids the sliminess that can occur when it is touching the plastic for an extended period. I do this with my lettuce and it usually lasts at least a week. Buying heads of lettuce should also save you some money over the more expensive bagged lettuce.
