I was doing some research on cardio and found this. It explains a lot.
"Just jogged my memory about something my cardiologist said to me that is important. When your muscles are weak, then your heart is pumping harder to make them work. In other words, if you are walking up hill and your heart is pumping hard, that's because it is sending much needed blood to your legs. When you are better conditioned, then your heart rate will be better."
This is why strength training is an important part of physical fitness. Cardio is not enough.
