I work out overwhelmingly at home. The speed at which I can walk, is inadequate for my medical condition. However, I have only recently started to rely heavily on DVDs. Reason being that any workout that I do not naturally motivate myself to do (and create, of course; as all professional audio workouts leave me cold these days) is not going to get done without some high quality (recommended and/or industry-standard) help.
So, since I need workouts to get me stronger (in addition to what I do at home) - for those times, I use DVDs.
No intention of joining a gym, studio or outdoor class.

I hate going to the gym so I have slowly built my own home gym. I have DVDs, on line videos, hand weights, an elliptical, a rower and a ski machine. I bought everything on sale or used from Craig's list or ads in the paper. Over the last 3 years I have spent about 500$, much less then I would have spent on a gym membership that I wouldn't have used regularly. I work out at home 6 days a week and wouldn't have it any other way.

I used to because I'm from a small town that didn't have a gym and I was pretty successful! Now that I live in a bigger city where a gym is on every corner, I gave in and got a pass. I love the gym atmosphere but struggle getting there daily like I would like to so I do workout DVDs. As long as you're exercising and always adding variety, I think you'll be good! :)

All I've been using is dvds but am finding that at times the monotony of always working out at home can be a real downer for me, plus I need a support group, someone I have to answer too if I miss a workout or goal, so I've actually been thinking quite seriously about joining a gym/fitness group.
You can scream, yell, shout, cry, whimper, grunt, bleed, puke and pass out. JUST DON'T QUIT!

I'd agree that it is not necessary to belong to a gym. You can do it at home. I lost the weight and have kept it off, without ever stepping foot in a gym. There may be a little self-discipline involved, to actually rise up and do it without the added incentive of having spent money for a membership, especially if the gym location was convenient. I've done it with a combination of walking outside, plus dvds and videos here on Spark and youtube.

This summer I have only used workout DVDs...I use 5-10lb weights with them when the exercises call for it. I have 7 that are a half hour each and I do one or two a day. I have toned up and lost more weight doing these then when I was spending 2 hours a day at the gym doing the nautalus weight machines and a bunch of cardio.

It depends on what your fitness goals are. When it comes to gaining or losing weight, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit.
Why have you been going to the gym ? Have you been using the cardio equipment ? using the free weights ? going to classes ? If you were going for classes, yes, you can use DVDs or YOUTUBE videos for your workouts.
If you were using the free weights, there are plenty of online strength training videos you can do at home. All you'd need would be some hand weights or resistance bands.
So, as long as you're eating right and watching your portions, there is absolutely no reason you can't do home workouts. the gym does give you more access to a variety of options, but no you don't need a gym to be fit. You can workout at home.

I do walking and strength training dvds. I use free weights and ankle weights with the dvds. I like not having to go somewhere, especially at a specific time. SP has some articles and videos that you might check out.
