like anything else....you have to use common sense and balance what you want, against what you can afford to do. That goes for money, calories, credit, time, etc.

When it comes to spending, I consider what my budget is and what I really really want, against what I need. Shopping online gives me the advantage of finding the best deal at my fingertips. And when I go to the store to shop, I need to consider the cost of transportation, food, drink, time, and schedule. When I look at all those factors together, I often come up winning if I get it online (even with possible shipping charges).

Now the internet even allows people to gamble online. NOW that's what I call dangerous.

How is this news? Online shopping has been around for, what, fifteen years?

I agree that you need to learn some basic self control. Are you bipolar? Maybe you shouldn't have access to money when you are manic.

I think it is a great thing to have available. My funds are limited and I am out everyday for one reason or another so it is easier for me to shop brick and mortar. I feel taking control of your spending will have to happen no matter how you spend or on what.

A Debit/Credit card IS Money you already have in the bank! A Credit card only is paid back in a monthly bill plus fees and intrest. Difference with a debit/credit, you don't touch, see, or hand the cash over to a cashier. It IS Your Money. It is taken from Your bank account. I prefer to see, feel, touch and even try clothing on in place of just ordering it off the internet. I want to know the quality of goods before purchasing. Returning can be a hassle even with free return shipping-it can take months for refund back into your card account. Once I was Never re-embursed for a returned item even after several calls and e-mails ! I was out $170 refund for a returned item! Learned my lesson. I do prefer my debit/credit for groceries and some other purchases in place of counting out cash or writing a check in front of others. Yes, debit cards Can increase Impulse spending, Stay on a budget, and ask yourself If you had that amount of CASH in your wallet, would Your Spend All of it on that item. That plastic card is Unseen CASH!

I don't think it's a good for bad thing. It's a tool and a resource. Tools are only as efficient as their user.

It depends on several things.

First, who you are, and how you manage your funds.

What is your situation, too? I'm disabled. It's a MAJOR challenge for me to go out to stores. Nevermind anything like trying clothing or shoes on. Not happenin'.

I am lucky to live in a city where everything is close and convenient... but I've lived in places where it took 30 minutes to get to town where I could do any store-shopping. That ate up any "savings" I may have had just in fuel costs, and wear and tear on my car.
And these days, I'd also have to speculate on how I'm going to get those purchases into the house. The places I buy from online ship them (mostly free shipping) right to my door.

I can also do comparison pricing online... and read reviews from others who have bought the same items. That saves me getting something that isn't quite up to par and being stuck with it, or having to return it.

Other than groceries, I think most of my buying is online. I buy some specialty food items online, too. When I lived in an area that offered it, I belonged to a grocery group which let you order and pay for your groceries online, they'd pull the items for you, and all you had to do was go in and swipe your card while they loaded your order in your car. It was great, especially for a night worker like I was at the time. I wish they'd offer that here!

For me, online ordering is a godsend. I hate stores and crowds anyway - even before my disability caught up with me.

I'm able to control my buying, which is a major factor in this type of commerce. If I see something out of the ordinary that I think I want, I wait. If I still want it in a week or two, perhaps then I'll get it IF it's something I need and/or will use. If I'm still iffy about it, I wait some more. If I continue to want it, then I'll go ahead and get it. But I don't buy on impulse for the most part. And it always comes down to whether I have the funds for it.

Before there were online shopping, people just went to stores to buy. I don't see the difference. One who buys a lot will do so online or at a physical location. At least online you save on gas and eating out. I love the reviews online on a product. It has saved me from buying an item.

Online shopping can have many positive qualities. You can easily compare prices of items at many different stores quickly to get a better deal. You can access a greater variety of goods than those which may be found in your local area. It is convenient if you do not have time or transportation or other issues that would prevent you from going to stores. No weather or crowds to deal with.

If you have problems with spending more than you should then you probably should not allow yourself to shop online very often.

If you don't spend beyond your means, there is absolutely no reason a person can't shop online. I love online shopping ! There are things I purchase via Amazon or some other website that I can't find locally. Online shopping can also provide customers with big discounts. So, yeah, there are times when I've bought something online because it was cheaper than a brick and mortar store.

I love to shop as much as the next person, but I know my limits. There are wants versus needs. What do I need versus what do I want ? Some people are compulsive shoppers, but I think as long as the person isn't spending more than they can afford, why not shop online ?

Its good in that it is very convenient and you can find the best prices. Its bad in that it hurts local businesses.

It's a good thing if you don't want to go and use up your gas and mess with crowds. It's a bad thing because thing I just have to see some items in person first. I hate paying shipping charges too! Nowadays, that is probably cheaper than gas!

There are pros and cons. I hate shopping and I hate crowds. Really, hate it. But, when I shop online, I do tend to overspend.

It is something that I used to do and for me it is shoes. I haven't bought me anything online for a long time. I have been showing great restraint.

If you are depleting your savings buying junk you don't need, it is not a good thing at all. But the same thing can happen if you go to a brick and mortar store.

Personally, there are things I am only able to purchase online. For example, books for my Kindle. Often, the cost for an ebook is cheaper than a regular book. I enjoy reading and I don't feel guilty spending money on it because I would buy a book no matter.

For me, being able to buy on line is a very good thing. It is convenient and saves me from buying so much gas for my car.

But I'm rather frugal and don't buy a lot of stuff on a whim, and do make sure I can afford it without finances getting tight before buying anything that is not a necessity. I think the ability to buy online may actually be a "bad thing" for someone who has a tendency to shop and buy a lot of non-essentials when this type of shopping causes the person to spend more than the income they have.

It sounds like you need to learn self-control! Because I am on a really tight budget, before I buy anything I always ask myself this:

"Do I NEED it, or do I want it?"

If I say "Want" then I don't get it.
If I say "NEED" then I ask myself what will happen if I don't get it. If THAT answer is "nothing" then the fact is, I "WANTED" it and didn't "NEED" it, so I don't get it.

I know many people who have ended up in dire straights because they see something and decide they have to have it and totally disregard affordability.

If you have a debit or credit card, you can shop online, spend money right in the comfort of your home or office!

Do you think it is a good or bad thing?

My savings account is getting emptier but there are just so much stuff that I want! Sigh!
