I was a Technical Writer before I retired because of illness. A Technical Writer is the person in charge of computer documentation and writing technical documents.

As a Technical Writer, part of my job IS to surf the net looking for info to write those documents. But occasionally, I will be on social media when things get a little quiet, which is not often.

My policy is not to plagiarize other works, but to do research and come up with original material of my own. This requires a LOT of research and thinking and writing, of course.

Sadly, my boss didn't see things my way and actually asked me to plagiarize! I also had 2 week or even 1 week deadlines all the time! I had to leave because of all the stress, the nasty colleagues and because the office was moving to the Multimedia park very far away!

When the jobs in my department were being outsourced to India and I didn't have a full work load I didn't want to look like I wasn't doing anything so I started searching up coworkers at other offices. When I ran out of coworkers to look up I looked up an old boyfriend. I could tell by the website that he was single so I contacted him. We dated in the late 60s and early 70s and reconnected in 2010 and I have been dating him ever since. That was the only good thing about my job being outsourced!

Most of the time my boss is out of the office. When it is slow, I play online games at Big Fish or browse Skinny Mom's Kitchen for diet tips and recipes.

When I had time at work before I retired, I usually just read a book.

CJGODESS101,

I used to work for a company where the president (part owner) surfed the web every single day.

Everyone does it from CEOs to the mailroom guys. There is not a working person out there who hasn't surfed when things got a little quiet. And that doesn't mean we're not taking initiative during those down times either.

Most companies will tolerate a certain amount of surfing as long as it doesn't interfere with the person's work load.

Before everyone goes crazy on me, yes I do work during the day. I have been in my current position for over 2 years and for the last 2 years have consistently asked for more work to fill in the gaps. One of my direct supervisors is a micro-manager and likes to do everything himself. The other manager is really good at giving me things to do.

I would be livid, as an employer, if my employees were actively seeking websites. How about working? Any job I ever worked always had something I could be doing.

Why don't you ask your Boss if you can sign up for some Continuing Education Online Classes....and get their approval FIRST to use the downtime in a constructive manner!! Some employers will even pay for this.....!! Anything work-related would be appropriate; First Aid; or even a Second Language like Spanish or American Sign Language....
patti

PS: I understand that some jobs really DO have downtime: my son worked an evening Customer Service Job at a Call Center---if no one called in requesting help, there really was legitimate "downtime"....

Look on job seeking sites, and find a job where you work and your time will just fly by...............no sitting around looking on line for entertainment.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I have had a lot of downtime at work recently and have exhausted my normal internet sites. What do you read online when you are bored? After Sparkpeople of course.
