I wish we dressed the way they did during the time of Downton Abbey. Minus the corsets.

Removing ribs to get that wasp waist isn't new. Women did it when corsets were in fashion during the Victorian years. Some of these women in the photos posted in this link are a big extreme. But it merely shows that women have been distorting their bodies in the name of beauty for a very long time.

Remember how women would always faint during stressful times ? Was it because they were weak ? No, it's because they couldn't breathe because their corsets were too tight.

The world of haute couture is completely different from the real world. When you go into a department store like Neiman Marcus. Head to the clearance rack. The blouse that you love is still $85 even at 90% off.

I know selling clothes at that price must be profitable. They couldn't do it otherwise.

wow! Ethel Merz. Removing ribs is just crazy.

There was a Parisian model 6 yrs. ago that had her lowest ribs removed, in order to have a smaller waist, and keep her job. But those high fashion models are supposed to look that way, with barely any boobs, because the clothes they wear are supposed to hang as if on a hanger, an actual hanger, and no one is supposed to "notice" the model. That changed once celebrity worship became a pastime in our culture. Showing the clothing was the whole point, back in the early days.

Have that size waist and be at least 5 foot 9.

I know if I tried to be that size I would be frustrated. It's never going to happen. I feel for women that think they are supposed to look like that. I suppose that someone with a really good metabolism can be healthy. I know that I cannot. And many other women cannot

MANDIETERRIER1,

A few years ago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston ran an exhibit of couture fashion. They showed the 2006 collections from houses like Valentino, Chanel, Christian Dior, etc.

You should have seen the clothing from Chanel. It was absolutely stunning. but the clothes were so TINY !!! You'd have to have the figure of a 11 or 12 year old in order to fit the outfits. And that is not an exaggeration. I was shocked at how small the sizes were for runway models. Even if I starved myself for months, I wouldn't have been able to fit those clothes.

And yet, they expect models with the measurements of 11 or 12 year old to show clothing meant to be worn by wealthy elite women ages 30+.

She is plus sized for a model. Apparently larger than size 6 for models moves them to the plus size model category. Robyn Lawley does not necessarily need to wear plus sized clothing outside of the modeling world. It is unfortunate that the words plus size are viewed negatively and are used to mean totally different sizes in the real world vs. the model world.

I like what she is saying and promoting about body size though.
From her Facebook page- "I'm a model beyond a size 10, I love my job I get to travel the world and at the same time promote healthy shapes and let audiences know that its ok to be who you are. Embrace your body for what it is, exercise and eat as healthy as you can and have fun there is so much more to life then fitting into size 6 jeans. And I'm glad I realised sooner than later :)"

It's always been said that only 2,000 women in the whole world can even afford clothes from the so called "fashion houses" and what you see in fancy magazines. Yet the media wants to put down the rest of us if we pooh pooh those kinds of clothes. Never mind expensive make up, perfumes, pretending that we would all be "perfect" if we followed everything that is dished out constantly. The constant search for "perfection" has driven many people nuts.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I was at a convention where they had displayed some clothes from a fashion show. The clothes were Runway size 0-2. Not many women could wear this size. She would have to have a 19 inch waist.

Marilyn Monroe was not "plus-sized" by current standards. Her weight changed a lot, and at one point, she was a UK size 16...which is a US 12. A US 12 then was not at all the same as a US 12 now due to size inflation.

Here are her actual measurements:

Height: 5 feet, 5˝ inches
Weight: 118-140 pounds
Bust: 35-37 inches
Waist: 22-23 inches
Hips: 35-36 inches
Bra size: 36D

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

Absolutely not even *close* to "plus size". Heck, she's not even close to the high end of normal size! What, just because she has a little curve in her belly? that's NORMAL for women, and (to me, at least) desirable. Angular and "mannish"-looking women are distinctly not pleasing to *MY* eye, anyway.
I've seen some true plus-sized models, and yes, they look like they would benefit from some weight reduction and toning. ***Like the rest of us with weight issues!!!*** Perfectly appropriate to be modeling clothing we'd like to spend our money on and look our best in.
I strenuously object to normal or even slightly "overweight" (hardly plus size) models... because the clothing drapes differently. You can't trust the photos. I understand the designers wanting their creations to be appealing, and therefore more marketable -- but I rarely buy anything that looks good on the typical model because I spend too much in returns or alterations or simply dissatisfaction.

Regarding a standard for "plus size", from a Huffington post article:
[ The definition of plus-size clothing varies, with PLUS Model Magazine setting the break-off point at size 12, while The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune have put it at size 14. The average dress size among American women is a 14, according to a 2011 report from Women's Wear Daily. ]

On a different note:
Someone asked early in this thread for the link to be made active.
At the top of these comment boxes, there is a button labeled "ADD A LINK". All you have to do is paste the URL into the box that pops up, and it will add an *active* link. If you think of it someplace else in your remarks than where you'd like it posted, you can thereafter cut-n-paste it to your desired location in your discussion (since the link always appends to the end of what you've written so far).
You can, alternatively, add: less-than-sign, "link" greater-than-sign, then your URL, followed by less-than-sign, slash (the one under the question mark)"link" greater-than-sign, which is HTML for the link, and this will also make it active. I'm sorry this sounds screwy... but when I entered it with the actual symbols, it translated it to HTML, which meant all you'd have seen was "URL" in blue/link text. I hope it's understandable as I've written it out. It's easier to just use SP's "ADD A LINK" button!

Please help other less computer-savvy members by making your links active! I've seen these requests in a lot of places here.

Corrected link (a bit after-the-fact, now):

Marilyn Monroe would be considered a "Plus Size" today, people are afraid of any curves, they want us women to look as though we are 12 years old, skinny as someone who is on their deathbed...............yes, that's right, that's what "skinny" means.

Aren't plus-sized models about size 10 or 12? She looks like she is about that size.

I see nothing wrong with this--it is the reality of how the fashion industry works. Nobody wants to see a size 18 woman modeling underwear, swimsuits, or really anything.

I think the problem today is that the fashion industry is out of touch with reality. While it is true that Americans have gotten bigger, the problem is that the models showing clothing have gotten smaller.

How many women can wear a size 0 ? And exactly what is a size 0 ? When I was a teen (back in the Dark Ages), the smallest size a person could buy was a 2/3. And if you were that size, people told you to eat a hamburger because you were too skinny.

The fashion industry is selling a product that only a small percentage of women can either wear or afford. The fact is, they would make more money if they created nice clothes suitable for a variety of figures and not just runway model sizes.

They aren't saying the she is plus sized they are saying that she is a plus size MODEL which is true (Size 8 and up is plus size in the fashion industry). She is a larger size than your normal sample model. I think she looks great!

Also I remember reading that one retailer used actual plus sized models, 18/20 and up, and they actually sold less of those clothes as when they were using their usual size 12/14 to model the same clothing.

Sizing has gotten crazy. When *I* was aged 22 (as my youngest daughter is now), I was 5' 3 and weighed 135 pounds. I wore a 9 / 10.

My Daughter is 5' 2", weighs 135 and wears a size 2.

the fashion industry is selling clothes...not reality. I'm sure that the majority of people flipping through a magazine/catalog for plus sizes clothing look at the pictures, consider how great the item looks on the model, and fantasize that they will look that good in that outfit.

take a look at how 2 different catalogs display the basically the same tank top...
who would you want to look like

" Why don't they put REAL "plus size" models in the "plus size" clothes they're trying to sell?"

Because a lot of brands (and high fashion models) are international and "plus size" here has a different meaning than in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Trying to please a gazillion markets with the same models is pretty darn difficult.

Also, once you get beyond a size 12 or so, the same proportions that designers use to make clothes for size 12 and smaller don't really work anymore. A lot of high fashion designers have no idea how to make clothes that would actually look good on larger people (see any of the Project Runway episodes where real people are the models). I'm not saying its right, but change in a culture that entrenched (especially in the couture houses where this particular model does a lot of work) takes time.

I'm pretty sure a size 6 is considered plus size in the modelling industry. The whole media and fashion industry (and the diet industry) is designed to make women feel inadequate so we will buy what they are selling to feel whole. It never works for us, but it's sure making them money.

Yeah, I'd have to agree... I saw the article yesterday and looked (briefly) at the pics. Not exactly "plus size" the way most of us would think of "plus size", but definitely "plus size" compared to a model's usual skinny-minny look. I worked for a sportswear manufacturer years and years ago and their model (she was on-site all the time, served as the receptionist when she wasn't needed to try on new styles) had to be a size 6; they did not want their clothing photographed on a woman who was larger than that.

What gets me is clothing on companies' websites that is "plus size" but the models wearing those "plus size" clothes are maybe a 10 or 12 or even occasionally a 14 at the most. Why don't they put REAL "plus size" models in the "plus size" clothes they're trying to sell?

I did a quick search for related topics and it seems that what is considered plus size on average is U.S. 12+
That size in comparison to U.S. Sizes 6 and under would be considered plus size BUT, we are talking about models, models wear clothes to display a companies product and like any for profit company wants to make their product look good......so, there's that.

Also, as parents we have mostly failed at educating our daughters to differentiate between "model" and real life women (not that models aren't real women but their livelihood depends on them being thin). I have two daughters, my oldest is over weight and I am working on getting her lose some weight but my youngest (15) is much thinner and is fashion conscience, ugh! That said she loves to eat and so she's not a skinny stick, her last doctors appointment said she's at the top end of her BMI and is healthy, she's mostly okay with that....for now.

As a man and men I have talked to like women with meat on their bones, LOtS of meat, I know I do. My fiancé is 5' 4" and about 135-139lbs and she wears about a size 4-6 depending on the brand. She says she's fat.....
*facepalm*

Before I met her she told me she was tipping the scale at 200lbs....she's 52 and she looks great and I tell her all the time.

Plus sized compared to what? Stick figures? :/

The fact that someone who is so obviously at a healthy weight is considered by some to be plus sized is definitely illustrative of the warped idea of what the media thinks women should look like,.
