My husband gets so mad when the media shows these kinds of test results and makes a big deal out of it, only to find out it "may" work "someday", lord only know how many years, etc. It gives people hope perhaps, but, when you are already old, you know it ain't gonna happen in your lifetime anyway. They shouldn't mention it when it's just mice!!! Nor when it's just a few people they have tested.
Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.
LADYCJM Nothing can substitute for changing habits and adopting a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Even WITH an injection, people still need to change their attitude toward how they manage their health in their daily lives.

It's an interesting summary but don't give up on diet and exercise. Any human trials on something like this won't be seen for years.
Diabetes research is moving rapidly, they are working on growing new pancreases' in labs, have developed a new insulin that is inhaled versus injected and the research continues. Inhaled insulin was just an idea 30 years ago!
Type 1 DM is very different then Type 2, even though insulin can be used for both types. Type 1 (formerly known as juvenile onset) is caused by damage to the pancreas cells that produce insulin. They have found a link between a viral infection a couple of weeks prior to the onset of Type 1 in many cases. These people will always need to replace insulin as their body can't manufacture insulin due to the damage. Some people will produce some insulin at some times making control very difficult, making them a "brittle" diabetic.
Type 2 DM is caused primarily by diet and obesity. Your body produces plenty of insulin but has become resistant to it causing your body to produce to more insulin etc...This is why the take meds to reduce insulin resistance and are advised to lose weight and eat a lower carb diet. Type 2 DM can frequently be reversed by losing weight, exercising and eating a very healthy diet. Easier said then done!
"Summary: In mice with diet-induced diabetes -- the equivalent of type 2 diabetes in humans -- a single injection of the protein FGF1 is enough to restore blood sugar levels to a healthy range for more than two days. The discovery could lead to a new generation of safer, more effective diabetes drugs. The team found that sustained treatment with the protein doesn't merely keep blood sugar under control, but also reverses insulin insensitivity, the underlying physiological cause of diabetes. Equally exciting, the newly developed treatment doesn't result in side effects common to most current diabetes treatments."
I really hope this turns out to be as promising as it seems!
