JANIEWWJD, thank you for you kind thoughts. I may never get to 100% again, but I am okay with it and adapting just fine. I'd be happier if I can now lose the weight I gained through all this malarkey. Working on goals really helps keep your mind off other troubles. Thanks again!!

REDDOTFLYER, I will look into this. This stuff does reoccur, kind of like malaria. I will definitely keep this in mind. Thanks!

Oh, I know what you mean. I knew I should be more careful, I'd heard all the warnings, had family members get it, my brother-in-law lost three horses to it earlier in the summer, and it was late September after all, so the skeeters should all be gone by now since it was already getting cold at night, but....there was one left. I had convinced myself that placing those candles around here and there would do the trick. I found out that citronella candles only protect the candle, that's about it. Even this year, i'm still getting bit wearing long pants and long sleeves in the stupid heat, so what do you do? I'm at a loss. Fortunately, our city has begun spraying bad areas this year. We live right next to a major river, so our mosquito population is incredible. Just do what you can.

I had success reducing nerve pain using 2 1000 IU Vitamin D and two CLA. They reduced the inflammation and once that happen I slowly regained mobility. Might be worth researching!

Sorry that you got hit with West Nile, but also glad that you are recovering.

I unfortunately have most of my outdoor time during peak mosquito hours. I've been lucky so far, but always wonder when a new bite shows up if this is going to be the one that gets me. I really should take care to put on insect repellant, but never seem to remember... I really should know better though -- many years ago my little 7-year old cousin (who would be nearing 40 now!) contracted encephalitis from a mosquito bite and passed away just a few days after becoming ill. It was extremely rare for that to happen in the US at the time (I think he was one of three cases within a couple of years), it's happening more frequently now with the introduction of West Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses.

Starting Weight: 260 lbs. (November 2010)
Quasi-Maintenance: 165 lbs. (June 2011)
Goal Weight: 150 lbs. (reached December 8, 2011)

Size 22W to Size 4

Currently maintaining within 5 lbs. (+ or -) of goal. I weigh daily, but also use a tape measure and the fit of my clothes to guage how well I'm doing.

I cover myself in insect spray and those darn things bite me almost every time I am outside at sundown. We have had multiple cases of West Nile in our area so I am definitely nervous about it all the time.

The virus hit me in the spinal cord in the neck, so my left arm is affected the most. For several months, I had no use of it and am now slowly gaining mobility back. The worst is the first couple of weeks with an excruciating headache, stiff neck, fever, rash, just crazy stuff. It zaps all your strength and endurance which has not come back yet. Also, the virus has invaded the optic nerve and now I'm dealing with mild cataracts. I tell you, I had absolutely no idea just how much damage these little critters can do to you, and the medical community is at a loss to help except recommend Tylenol and Aleve for some relief, and that really did help a lot. I was lucky. It didn't go into the brain which happens quite frequently, creating encephalitis in a lot of people...or worse. I'd say now after 10 months, I'm abou 65% back to normal, however, I have never been able to return to work to full capacity, but slowly that's improving, too. That's about it.

I'm so sorry you have had to struggle with this! I'm very active about reporting standing water to the city to prevent mosquitoes from breeding, but I know that's not possible everywhere. I hope your recovery continues to go forward!

Just wanted to remind folks that we're in the thick of summer and I doubt there are many places, if any, that don't have their share of mosquitoes. Please, please, please take precautions to not get bit by the pesky little varmints. I am just now getting back on my feet after contracting this disease last September, 10 months ago. I will have permanent neurological problems now, but I actually feel lucky. Some people have had it even worse. I live in an area where it's a huge problem, but you can't live in a cocoon either, so it's a gamble. I lost this one.

Anyway, just take care out there people. I am back here and need to get back on track. Not being able to be physically active for months has taken a huge toll, and as expected, the weight has come back on. It's always something.....
