We added in 22% for parties of 6 and larger because some people don't know how to tip. It's the minimum for groups. Often people would tip over that amount.

So yes, I make sure to tip that much at least if we are a group.

I don't think I've ever stayed at a restaurant meal for three hours. If so, unless it was a planned party event, where the restaurant knew we would be there that long, I would definitely be tipping more.

Oh my goodness, I have worked in the Food Industry and I am very conscious of leaving a good gratuity if that service is good. Like some of the rest of you I have wanted to crawl away from the table because of some of the tips I've see give to a much deserving person. I am glad this subject was brought up.

I agree with everyone else-you were right to want to leave more. I find that those of us who have worked in the food service/bar industry tend to be better tippers & more conscious of using a table for a long time on a busy night. I've eaten out with people who have made me want to crawl under the table with the way they treat the wait staff, or how little they tipped!

How much was the bill ? If your server did spend extra time taking care of your table as well as letting you stay the extra time, I would have tipped at least 25%, maybe 30% if it was very good service.

I would say that if your group goes again, make sure a generous tip is left. If you see your previous server, you might even want to slip them a little something extra to thank them. That's if you don't think your group left enough the last time.

Because I've worked service jobs, I tend to leave a nice tip.

Tip around 25% I use to dine out with a group of drinkers. The dinner check was always divided equally. Being a non-drinker it was unfair for me to chip in for pitchers of beer.

I think a tip should reflect the service given. If the server didn't rush you out and the service was good, a better than average tip was definitely in order.

Large parties and when we are there for a long time. I always tip better than expected.

If I go to Olive Garden and only order the soup and salad. I give a significant tip. The meal is really cheap, but still takes the same amount of effort to serve.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

i would have tipped significantly more. I cannot stand a poor tipper or one who does not appropriately acknowledge the service of others.

I totally agree you tip more! Saturday night she missed a tip or two! If others did not agree I would have left more! I might have even handed my tip to the waitress and said thanks for not rushing us, I appreciate it! Hugs!

I did leave him extra. At the end of the meal I was the last one to leave and made sure he was taken care of. I felt it was the right thing to do, and will do so again. Our server this night was also the son of a friend of mine and I wanted to make sure I wasn't just being swayed by that even though I would have done it if I didn't know that.

Our children are grown so when we go out for a family dinner it is usually 8-12 people. I am in awe of the great service people who can keep everyone's meal straight and take care of us all. DH and I tip accordingly, above the normal 20%.

I have been out with a group of friends and noticed that some have tipped badly, Because of that whenever out with a group and the service is good I will tip extra in case someone is tipping below average.

This: "I would definitely be tipping significantly more. Maybe remind your friends that the tip is for your use of the server's time and attention -- not for the food itself. Your group essentially took "2 turns," but only paid for one."

Last week a group of us went out for dinner to a casual restaurant. It was a Saturday night and there were six of us. As we tend to do, we spend a lot of time talking and were there for close to three hours. The service was fine and the server did not rush us.

My question is: How should our server been tipped? I felt that we should have been more generous with our tip since the server missed at least one "turnover" on the table. The others did not agree. If it weren't such a busy night, it would have been fine, but on a Saturday night, most restaurants around here have a wait for tables.

Do you think the standard tip is OK? Would you have tipped more? Would you have left more on the table yourself? We have another outing coming up on a Saturday and I don't want us to wear out our welcome.
