I'll go with dress size- but at a particular store that has 'real' sizes... a 10 at one store is a 14 at another, for example. The mentality is to focus on fitness, muscle, and inches, not the number. on the scale.

Anybody healthy should go for dress size, if possible ...

I am below a weight that is healthy for me, and wearing a size 10 or size 8 (in bottoms), due to illness ... wasting syndrome is not any fun, nor does it look attractive, past a certain point (at whatever age) ... and over 20 pounds lower than what is my happy weight ...

If you have a more ideal body composition, you could have the bangingest body at a pretty high weight ... I had never been there ...

If you STILL want to be skinny and lighter than you ever imagined, anyway ... please get in line and follow me into low-carb-land ... and never return to the real world ...(add intense cardio, as well) ... nearly works wonders for my Type 2 diabetes.

IMHO, I'd gotten it about 4 or 5 years earlier than I was supposed to ...

rebacanola has the right idea.
the question is whether the number on the scale is the end all be all goal for you or if you'd rather be a certain shape. because they're not always the same thing.
so let's say your goal was 130lbs. but when you get there, you find that the shape you're at at 130lbs isn't exactly what you were thinking of. to get to the shape you wanted to be, you'd need to gain 20lbs. so you'd weigh 150lbs, but be the shape you wanted.
so you either get to look the size/shape you wanted to at 20lbs over your weight goal or have not quite the shape you wanted but get to see the number on the scale that you wanted to see. that's the question.

personally i am all for the path of least resistance. the number on the scale isn't tattooed on my forehead and the tags of my clothes aren't in fifty point font on the outside of them. so the number on the scale isn't quite what i'd like it to be and the shape isn't quite what i'd like it to be, but i'm maintaining easily between the two of them. and i can happily live with that. i can expend a lot of effort to get to either one, but it's not something i can really keep up for very long. i apparently have slightly unrealistic grass-is-always-greener goals so me being too lazy to insist on either one is to my benefit. neither the number on the scale or how many inches around your waist are end all, be all indicators of anything.

My goal weight is a completely random number that I picked from the middle of my healthy weight range. I have no idea how realistic it is. And as others have said, dress sizes vary widely. I would really like to be able to shop in stores like Anthropologie that only carry sizes to a 12, so that is my goal.

I think the question is more about size/measurements vs. weight. Dress sizes can vary (like many, I have about 3 sizes of clothes in my closet right now that all fit). But of course I'd rather have the waist measurement I want and still be 20 pounds over my "goal weight." Right now, I'm smaller than I was the last time I weighed what I do (by various body measurements as well as clothing) and that's because I'm leaner than I was.

I'd rather be smaller and heavier, than bigger and lighter.

I shall stay the way I am because I do not give a damn.

I would pick weight. Clothing sizes are so off I can wear anywhere from a size 4-10. If it is a dress I might wear a 12-14. It is all because even at 125 pounds. My weight collects in the belly region.

One of you that has arrived. Could you please point the way to Perfection?

Weight. Clothing sizes are no longer standardized and vary widely from label to label, making them meaningless as far as data pertinent to body size (my opinion, of course).

Moving in new directions.

I also find the question odd. Both weight and dress size are indicators of reaching the goals we hope for, and they should be strongly related. As others have mentioned, women's sizing is inconsistent. The scale is a bit more consistent. In some clothes I might wear a size 7 and I know that other size 3s fit fine so I am not upset that I "fit" in the 7's as long as I know I have not gained weight. But for the most part, I know when I'm at my ideal weight, within a pound or two over or under, my favorite clothes fit fine and I'm happy with the way I look.

Let's see, last time they asked this in "Teen" magazine, the answer that won was "weight", this was back in the early 1960's................funny how nothing much has changed, including we still keep on trying and trying.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I would rather be a certain size! I had a girlfriend who weighed 15 pounds less but I wore two sizes smaller than her because of my fat vs muscle ratio.

I can wear a smaller size shirt due to the exercising I am doing vs my overall weight.

@ YELLOWDAHLIA ...Oh My Gosh is all I have to say about last night ha ha ha. Oh wow.

But I lost a pound! Hangover, yes! Scale down, yes!

Anyway...women's clothing sizes. It's like...really?

I have a pair of I git into a size 1-2. Sounds grand, yeah? lol, I have a a pair of size 6 jeans here - that I will never be able to fit into unless I lose about 15 pounds. Seriously. There is just no way it is ever happening.

And I cannot figure it out. I mean, I'm kinda old, and I do not remember such a problem 20 years ago. Back then I could grab anything in a size 4, and it would fit.

Now, I range anywhere from a 2-8.

lol, oh - the question!! Weight on scale matters to me only...but better is how I feel, and look.

I think when I look and feel healthy, I will have reached goal. I have always been strong and have always weighed at least 20 pounds more than I look, I am guessing due to muscle. Hard to consider what size or weight I need to achieve, but when I get there, I will know. LOL

My goal to to have that "fit chick" look. Strong and healthy. The largest size I've worn is a screaming 26. When I felt my fittest, I was a 14 striving to be a 12. I don't care how heavy or what size it equates to. I'm going for BadA$$!

LOL.... emoticon (me too, EELPIE)

I think I understood the question because when I was at my highest weight I said I wanted to lose 100 lbs or get to a size 8- which ever came first. I got to a size 8 at around 160. That's when I realized that the clothing sizes these days are seriously messed up! So I set a goal weight and aimed for that instead.

Is it me, or is this question odd??

My perfect weight correlates with my size of clothing. Am I not comprehending this right? Totally possible after last night's drinking, lol...

It's the same thing, yes? Or is the question for someone who is 250 pounds, but wishes to be a size 2? What? Wait. What? I drank waaaay too much last night.... emoticon

Would you rather be your perfect dress/pants size but 20 pounds away from your perfect weight.

OR

Would you rather be your perfect weight but two dress/pants sizes above your perfect size?

I would pick "perfect weight' and wear whatever fits me at that weight.

Clothing sizes vary so much that it's really hard to be one size. In my closet right now I have pants in sizes 4, 6, 8 and they all fit. I even have a pair of black slacks that are a size 10 that I still wear.

Same with shirts, I have smalls, mediums and a couple larges- they all fit.

Either would be awesome. I don't think I can be my ideal clothing size and still have 20 lbs to lose though.

I would choose my ideal clothing size because being able to easily buy clothes that fit would be so nice. If I were at my ideal clothing size, certain areas of my body will definitely have gotten smaller. I will probably be at or very near my goal weight at that point.
