Getting an accurate handle on portions is critical. I had no idea what I was doing in the beginning either - or, I *thought* I did, but I was terribly wrong! My postal scale and measuring cups and spoons are things I can't live without. I don't use them every day now, after having familiarized myself better, but I still use them regularly. I did so today in fact, measuring how much salt I *really* put on those hard-boiled eggs I had for lunch!

The restaurant souffle cups are wonderful. I use so many of them I buy them from a restaurant supplier in quantity. They're so cheap! and they come in a variety of sizes. You can get lids for them which snap on, too. The ones I buy - as others have mentioned here - are pretty cheap, so you can't microwave in them unless you want melt-down lumps! LOL But I use them to portion out my bone broths, nut snacks, lots of things. I think the ones I have are 5-oz, so you can put a half cup serving of something in there and still have a bit of head space. They freeze fine, and they seal well for liquids. I've made lots of gelatin in them, although you do have to let the liquid cool just a bit before pouring it in. I believe I pay about 5 per cup-and-lid for the size I use. They do come in other sizes. Very convenient. The ones I've seen on shelves in the warehouse grocers aren't the size I need, at least that I can recall.

Between all these "tools", I've gotten pretty good with *true* portion sizes. That was a big improvement in my dietary habits!

...the problem with people these days is
they've forgotten we're really just animals ...

In the restaurant section. I am sure that you can find those. You might have to buy a thousand. So please recycle

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

I have looked to buy those little plastic cuplets with lids, but, frankly, it's easier to go to Fudruckers, or some Mexican restaurants or fast food chicken places, that has sauces and seasonings at a bar, so you can help yourself, and just take a few, and I also took the ones we used, washed them at home, instead of just tossing them. I like those and the small size snack baggies, so I can take them somewhere in my purse, like if you go to a show or ballgame, etc. Or even in the car.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

Hello DOWN135...I'm not sure you can get those at the wholesale clubs you mentioned, but I will check next time I go to BJ's here in Hampton VA. I'm sure if you googled it or go to a restaurant supply site, maybe even amazon, ebay (you know they sell just about anything)

That IS a great idea! And can't you buy them in bulk at BJs or Sam's or Costco?

Oh, yes, those little condiment containers from restaurants are great. I always get them and they hold a perfect amount for small items such as nuts and salad dressings. If I have a bigger to go container for salad dressing I use more. Little keeps me in check. Smart one. Thanks for sharing emoticon

You know those little plastic cup things you see when you eat out at some joints, where you can put catsup or sauce into them? Get some of those, with lids, measure your nuts and small things into those, ahead of time, and it will be easier to grab and put into your food. I also buy the 1/4 cup ones for snacks, husband just grabs one, knows that is all he has per day. That or those small snack size baggies is a big help. You can put your counted out chips in there, if you don't trust yourself with a larger bag, and that is still you snack.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I remember in 1998 when I first started to do something serious about my weight...we were eating dinner. I looked at my plate and wondered "this looks like too much food". I got another plate, dug the boxes, cans out of the trash, looked up meat etc. I measured out a serving size....OMG!!!! I then measured what was on plate No 1....we were eating 4 times the suggested serving size. I then started measuring more often. As the average dieter, we all get off course from time to time. Soon those serving sizes increased as well as my weight. I have learned the past year to keep those measuring devices on the counter.

Walnuts are good for you and good in small amounts, but nuts are one of those foods that I definitely have to measure and track before eating or I end up shocked.

I agree. A scale and a good set of measuring cups and spoons are key to accurate tracking. I estimate when necessary, but even in maintenance, measure and track. Also, small containers where you can preportion out meals into help to make this process easier. Weigh and portion once for several meals, and then just grab and use. I usually do this for breakfast and sometimes, for other meals.

I don't think the importance of this can be emphasized enough. I have a theory that MOST people who claim they eat fewer than 1200 calories per day and still can't/don't lose weight are NOT really being honest about how much they eat, and are either sneaking things they don't count, or just guessing how much it is (rather than weighing/measuring to be sure).

I weigh (sometimes measure volume or count units instead) and track everything, no exceptions, including vitamin pills and any medication that has calories (such as Tums).

My best purchase in the last 5 years is my little kitchen scale. I weigh and measure everything.

Being off my plan for the last 5 months, I'm getting back on track. I find tracking my food in SP really helps. So here I am this morning putting in my breakfast. I didn't measure my walnuts I put in my cream of wheat. So I go to the kitchen and weighed what I figured I had used....Its amazing what you will see. Glad I didn't use too much, While walnuts are good for you they are fattening!! Measuring and weighing help keep me on track!
