There is also the matter of the company producing the Armour making money hands over fist, ripping off we consumers. The drug companies charge way too much for their diddley meds, and then cry and whine about the health insurance companies..............but FDA does nothing, and never has done anything, no matter who runs things at the top. They all have each other's hands in each other's pockets.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

Go online and look at Women's Health magazine. They had a great article about the difference between Armour and the synthetics several years ago. Share it with your doc. The doc will know the difference between the Armour and the synthroid dosage. Armour is more expensive by quite a bit. No generic nor substitution like with the synthetics. Mine is 3 times more than with levoxyl but worth it for me. Some docs won't prescribe it because there was an old article about not being able to get an exact dosage every time. Then the synthetics were found to not be nearly as accurate as they were touted to be.

I have been on Levothroid for two years, and so far, it's not expensive, and I feel a lot better with it. I was on Armour several years ago, and it made my hair fall out, and I acted like an old fish wife, lol. Seems almost every woman my age that I know is on some kind of thyroid therapy though.

I checked on this and as I am on brand name Synthroid the cost per bottle is the same. I would probably wind up saving money being that Armour has it all in one pill.

It might be for some. My insurance covers it, but others may not. There is no generic for it.

I've been taking Armour for a few years. I switched from Synthroid and Cytomel and Armour works much better for me. Even though my labs were always good, I always had symptoms when on Synthroid. Even after adding Cytomel. My body just functions better on the desiccated thyroid than it does on synthetic.

IIRC, 60mg Armour is close to 88mcg of Synthroid. It's been quite a while since I've switched, but I do know my doctor was able to start me on a dose that equated to my Synthroid dose, though the dosage numbers were different. I am currently taking 75mg of Armour, and that's two separate pills (60mg and 15mg) because Armour goes from 60 to 90.

I function best on the slightly hyper end, with my numbers a little over 1. If I go over 2, I start feeling crappy again.

The only thing you can do is speak with your doctor. I would guess you'd start with a dose of around 90, or a bit higher, but you'd have to go in a few weeks later to see if you need an adjustment. As with other thyroid medications, it can take up to six months to get the dosage right for each person.

Good luck!

Welcome to the site! Your doctor and/or pharmacist are the best people to advise you on the pros and cons of this medication. But if you're looking for others who have had experience with this drug, you might try posting about it in one of the SparkTeams for hypothyroids. Here's a link to one:

Hope that helps!

Joined Spark today. Looking for info on Armour I have had Hashimoto's for years now and have been on alternating doses of Synthroid and feel ok, I manage. I really want to try and switch to Armour but their isnt an equivalent dose. I take 137 of synthroid mon thru fri and 150 sat, sun, mon. Plus Cytomel 25 daily any suggestions on how to switch would be great. I have a doctor who is always willing to listen
