Thanks to everyone for your input. I was at a high school class reunion this past weekend, and darn if I didn't look good! The encouragement I received from all of my Spark friends really got me going to lose alot of the weight I had gained in the last 40 years! And by sticking to good portion control and watching what I ate and drank (although, I ate a little bit of everything under the sun!) I only gained .6 of a pound!!! I am so happy I have the support behind me to keep on keeping on even after my little slip ups. Thanks again to everyone.
Mamashu6boys, I could have written your post about low carbing. That was the only thing that worked for me when I was younger. After I married my husband, who loves carbs, I convinced myself that I could eat like he does and once I went back to the carbs I was addicted to them. Now I have gained a lot of weight, but I've gone back to low carb and am losing again, and am much healthier and have tons of energy.
It's not for everyone. We each have to find what works for us. The 17 day diet doesn't seem to be a fad diet with you eating weird foods, so if it works for you, go for it!

A friend of mine did the 17 day diet and it worked well, but she didn't stay with it long term. An eating plan should be something you can stay or you will have trouble maintaining your loss.
As for those who crave foods like sweets, fried foods, etc. If you stay away from them long enough you will lose your taste for them. Honest! I would have never believed someone who told me that, but once I started eating large quantities of vegetables...a wide variety, I am no longer interested in sweets or fried foods. I cook them for my husband and they don't even tempt me in the least. My body craves things like brussels sprouts.

When it seemed like the scale wouldn't budge. I looked into the 17 DD. I think it is too strict, for me. At least I find the first two phases too strict. I applaud those that are disciplined enough to stick to a strict diet, but I am not one of them.
I got to maintenance of 125 pounds. Eating in moderation. I had been 165.

Hi, To answer your question...I think counting carbs is slightly easier for me then calories. Over the last 20 years I've done the fat free craze, deal a meal, atkins, weight watchers, you name it. They all work if you are careful and follow the "rules". They have all also helped me understand different things about nutrition. Because I'm something of a carb addict I find that cutting out all empty carbs is the fastest way for me to regain control of my cravings and bad habits. Over all I do ok without counting, once I'm back into the swing of healthful eating. In general my body responds well to cutting out the empty calories and making sure I eat lots of veggies as the main part of my meals. I can also better avoid platoues by having a slightly higher and slightly lower eating day once or twice a week, the "keep my body guessing" style works for me better then a same number of calories day after day style. I like following something "strict" for the first couple of weeks, but the real trick for me long term is to find the healthier foods I like and the amounts I can eat and still lose wait and then use them daily with occasional switch ups like a dinner out with friends wear I eat smart but not strict. The only exception is when I'm on Atkins since the point is to put your body in a completely different "burning" method I can't add any extra carbs for even a day or I have to spend 3 or so days "resetting" my body. This is only the 3rd time in 20 years that I've decided to move to Atkins as a kick start, usually portion control and stopping empty carbs is enough. The reason I've had weight gain issues in the past is mostly from having six kids all with bed rest requirements. Until now when I let other stresses put me back on sugar for a year. I think if you practice measuring carefully and counting carbs or calories for a week or two, you might get to the point were you can have a good feel for it and not stress on it as much, unless you stop losing again. Then you can go back to messuring and making sure for a while. My husband also eats way more then me, even on a diet he can eat more in one meal then I can eat in a day and he still loses weight. I just got used to having a few things that are good for me around even if he won't eat them, and i serve him and my boys things I just don't eat, or I eat one bite only. Little by little you will feel what works for you, it's a life path not just a quick short cut. Best wishes to you both!
OOPS! We went out to eat with our 'life group' from church last night to a little out of town restaurant that features a fantastic seafood buffet. Everything, frog legs, shrimp of all kinds, fish, clams, scallops, oysters, cole slaw and of course cheese grits. The dessert bar had homemade pecan pie - a true Southern staple! Well the downside was a 1.4 lb addition, but boy was the fun and fellowship worth it! A truly fantastic time with great caring friends and delicious food. Hope everyone has a terrific weekend!
I did 17 day for almost a year and lost almost 50 lbs. I had a lot going on and it became difficult and boring. I kind of fell apart and gained all of the weight back plus more. I spent 2 year getting the gains and finally I had enough.
I have given up following any diets from now on. I watch calories and try to eat food that resembles where it came from but I will have a slice of bread or a pita if I want it. I just have to track it and make it work in my daily plan (I try to hit all my nutrition goals too).
I feel like I have so much more freedom. I can have a slice of my kid's birthday cakes, I can go to a potluck and have little samples of my favorites. Quickly the first couple weeks, a mini plateau, and then more off.
Thank you Tiffany. I appreciate your post. Are you more successful at counting carbs or calories? I am trying to do the 17DD with my husband and I believe the reason I am not losing is because he doesn't like some of the food also I am always in a hurry to get meals prepared and don't measure the amounts properly each time. He has health problems, so we do not exercise like we REALLY should. I am trying to stick with the diet as closely as I can. I am not losing as much as he is, but I understand that is normal. It is just frustrating not to see the results as dramatic as I had anticipated. Good luck with your weight loss. I wish you good health and much success!
I used that book to lose 20 or so pounds a few years ago. As I recal the books plan is to help you lose weight by eating only healthful foods and limiting calories by weeding out empty carbs and extra fat, all while resetting your motabalisem. I need to read it again, but my main attraction was the low carb idea that keeps it mixed up every 17 days. I always platoue after the first 10 pounds and get frustrated after months of "good eating" I just started back up on the low carb eating again today since my weight has creeped back up, I had also "fell off the wagon" befor I had met my goal when we had to move suddenly. I am kicking off my 1st 2 weeks with an almost zero carb Atkins plan, but after that I will be using the 17DD if only loosely. I wouldn't know why exactly you are having problems, if this first 17 day stage of the diet is more carb then you are used to then you must have been on an almost akin like diet? As long as you're not gaining I would try sticking to the plan making sure you are using the correct amounts of the proper food. You may be like me and sit at the same weight for a long time and then finaly jump down several pounds at once. As others have said if this doesn't work for you after a fair try it's not your fault, It's just not the right plan for you. I wish you well, Tiffany

I know how hard it is to eat a healthy diet when everyone around you is drinking sweet tea and eating fried foods! My family loves their fried potatoes and sweet tea.
I think it helps to pick one thing to change. Work on that change for a month, until it becomes a habit. For example, stop the sweet tea and switch to something without sugar. Tea with sweet n low works for me. The point is to find something that is readily accessible that you like.
And if the tonic water works for you to prevent cramps then keep drinking it.
I've also found that it helps to weigh or measure everything. I tend to either over or under estimate my portion sizes so that I either end up not eating enough or eating too much. When I'm cooking I can eyeball measurements but not when I'm serving myself.
Just take it slow and easy, you can do this. Just don't try to do it all in one day.
Thank you, ladies, for your input. I am just trying to eat better foods and really really trying portion control. Being form South Georgia, it is hard to get away from fried foods and SWEET iced tea, but I am trying to bake, broil or steam my foods now and drink either green tea or a mixture of flavored water & diet tonic water --- the tonic water contains quinine which helps with cramps in my feet, calves, hands and fingers. Yeah. I know that sounds weird, but if I go more than 3 days without drinking it, my fingers and toes curl up. Thanks again for talking with me. If you have any tricks or tips that you use, I would be sooo grateful to hear them.

I've never read the 17DD plan. But if you're not seeing results with it, then you might need a different plan. Not every diet works for every body type. That said, success is in more than the numbers on the scale. Do you feel more energized on this diet? Are you exercising regularly? Do you feel that anything has changed for the better? If you are starting to feel better, then give it the 17 days and see how it ends. If no good change is happening, though, then I'd try something that fits you better.

I've never tried this diet but from what I saw on line it looks like a 1200 to 1500 cal a day diet. I haven't read the book or seen any other information on this plan.
If it works for you then that is terrific.
I've given up on diets and am working on changing my mind set to eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and keeping at 1500 calories a day with minimal processed foods and lots of fruits and vegetables.
I've always seen diets as temporary and dieted myself up to 250#s. My goal is to be healthy forever so I have to change how I eat permanently.
Good luck and keep coming back for support and to let us know how you are doing! Who knows, the 17DD may jumpstart a whole new healthier you. And when it comes down to it, that's all we want!
Hello, I am in Albany, Ga. I have just started back with Spark after a very long absence. Usually I try to eat low carb, recently I began following the 17 Day Diet. It is adding more carbohydrates into my diet than I am used to eating. I have also began counting calories and it does not seem like I am making any headway. Is there any one else following Dr. Moreno's 17 DD and what success have you had on it?
