The group I went to, spent more time chatting about weight loss or gain, commiserating with each other, and then we all went out to eat, they had been together for a long time, and didn't really want any new members, not a very helpful group. Weight Watchers was much better, but did cost more, lost a lot of weight, but, as anything else, when you stop sticking to the plan, it doesn't matter how friendly the group is. Could use a plan where you stay in a room, someone tosses in your food for every day, and let's you out when you have hit goal, and that's about the size of it for many of us.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I belonged to TOPS for 2 years.

It is a support group. The fees are low -- yearly to TOPS and regional monthly fees.

It is informal and low key. Like SUSIEQUE said, you can have follow whatever food plan you like.

It is a great way to meet new people and be accountable with the weekly weigh ins.

I was a member for 6 years. And I've been to 3 different TOPS groups. Some are better than others, but overall I loved going to TOPS. That weekly weigh in helped a lot to keep me accountable and the meetings were fun and encouraging.

Go to the meeting and see how you like it emoticon

Weight loss is accomplished with the mind.

A person who wants something WILL find a way....a person who doesn't will find an excuse.

Which do you prefer?
The pain of self discipline?....or...the pain of self regret?

I have gone to Tops in the past but now I do Weight Watchers. I don't know if there are any TOPS chapters in the area where I now live. It was in the early 90s when I last attended, and yes we had a weigh-in on a doctor's scale every week. The concept was very good and it was very inexpensive, preferable for some who feel Weight Watchers (and other such programs) are not within the family budget.

My experiences with TOPS was that it was a little too informal and many people there would go out and eat (unhealthy) foods right after the meeting, with the idea they would do better right after that, for the rest of the week. That is the bad thinking and justification that many of us have subscribed to most of our lives. I see no reason why TOPS should not take Weight loss more seriously, and maybe some of the groups do, but I feel in my experience, WW was a little more organized and members seemed to take following their plan more seriously. (In Tops, you choose your own plan, which is fine if you actually have a good plan and commit to sticking with it!)

I went to a TOPS meeting once with high hopes too. I didn't go back. There were only 6 members and you don't weigh on a scale to see your progress. We just talked about common topics and the meeting was over.

I hope your experience with TOPS is much better than mine.

Hello fellow Sparkers! I was wondering if any of you could give me some info on the program called TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). There is a new chapter being started here in my community, and was wondering if any of you have sat in on a meeting or are a member. It seems like to me that this would be great for accountability, and meeting new people (which I LOVE) that share the same weight loss struggles. Any info you can give would be much appreciated. I am kinda excited about this...I just hope it is what I am hoping it is. ya know? :o)
