Yup, one of my coworkers has to b*tch about something at lunch- Every. Single. Day. And of course he's the smartest person in the world so we should all agree with him. He has a very narrow world view & refuses to accept any opinion other than his even if his has absolutely no basis in fact. The sad thing is that when he talks about his marriage it's become apparent that he is doing what someone else here has said-this is an outlet for him since he can't deal with the real problems in his life. I think he does participate in "recreational outrage" -he complains about the things he can't fix rather than confront the things that need to be fixed.

I've "unfriended" a bunch of distant relatives and an old high school friend or two because of their recreational outrage on social media. What gets me is the extreme hypocrisy-- they'll post something nasty about lazy people taking food stamps, when their own family has been on food stamps off and on since they were babies. If you call them on it, they say, "Well, I'm not talking about good people who just fell on hard times and really *deserve* help." Because we all know that THEY are the only good people who deserve help. Everybody except them is a freeloader.

I am reminded of my "toxic" former friend that I recently posted about, she is an ultra Liberal (her words for self description of her political views) and she plays the part of an outraged citizen all-the-time about the injustices of the world and tree cutting, bird killing, anti smoke-a-doobie laws and it's enough for me to want to Van Gogh my ears!

She's a Drama Queen so maybe outraged citizen doesn't quite apply here but a pain in the butt nonetheless.

My husband and his son are like your sister. Drives me nuts. I am to the point of responding, with oh, that is interesting or change the subject to something about sports. For my step son - I sometimes tell him, you are a beneficiary of some of Obamas changes so maybe you shouldn't hate them so much - usually shuts him up.

Wow! You could be talking about my Husband, LOL! Everytime he watches the news, gas prices, economics, politics or life in general "The Speech Begins" . "It Should be',.."They should'..."That won't work"....'I would do '... and on and on! He will dominate the conversation even with others present. I learned to say nothing and changing the subject never works, He wouldn't agree with me anyway or need to "do one better'. Pass it off as a constant complainer.

No such thing as "bad foods"- just bad choices.

Ugh, I recently reconnected with a high school buddy on FaceBook and we NEVER talked politics when we were hanging out together....mostly because we were too busy having a "good time". We chit-chated back and forth on FB messenger to catch up and then I started to read his feed.....oh boy, I almost felt like I had to hide my political affiliation because the rhetoric on his feed slammed and insulted people opposing his political views.

He definitely fits the "outraged citizen" profile, I think he thinks the President's Storm Troopers are coming to his house soon.

I have a very good friend who seems to be constantly outraged by something or the other that she's heard on FOX news. I think she gets it from her family, because they live the lives of outraged and upset citizens who constantly predict doom. I just keep reminding her that the news these days (no matter the network) is not like it used to be and that it's just a bunch of sensationalized, one-sided, garbage which is intended to make us outraged and cause divisiveness and conflict (anything to get ratings, which means $$$). I cannot tell you how many times she's been outraged and/or predicted doom for us all based on what she heard on the news and then nothing happens. But, then the next issue comes along...

Oh well, what can you do.

My sister has a friend that is that way but its not government it EVERYONE. She takes up all the conversation w/ how somebody she knows is living their life wrong. I hate when I visit my sister and she is there or comes over. I do not know how my sister can stand being around her so much. I also notice my sister picking up on the "recreational outrage"

I believe this phenomenon is called "recreational outrage." With the abundance of information at our fingertips, it is very easy to get caught up in something that doesn't directly affect you. It's all about perspective.

One stumble does not a failure make.

Everything in moderation.

We have one family member like that too.

They watch Fox and Friends every day. Also sends LOTS of very long e-mails bashing Democrats and Liberals. I don't like some of what this Pres has done either, but he's our President...and I'm just trying to get through my own daily life.

In my former profession I dealt with a lot of people like that, hence my high BP problem.

There's a lot of that sky-is-falling mentality on social media, too, and I see it over and over again on Spark, especially the café.

My Father is like that. Everything is either a conspiracy by the Government, an injustice by our President or caused by the aliens that the Government is hiding from us! We're like LEC358 in that we try to ignore him. The worse part is that he pours over these far out, fringe websites and fills my email box with article after video, some of which are hours long, to prove his point.

My grandfather is that way, but it's at least partially a product of his generation. Especially when you get him going about the city government (sorry, BK :)). At this point, everyone in the family does the smile, nod, change the subject routine like pros.

@Sherylds: That's probably closer to the truth of the matter.

BUT! My question for you all is; do you KNOW anyone like this, they may fall into the category as "annoying as hell" or "that guy/gal".

My sister is becoming more & more like that and every thing this President does, according to her, is another step closer to the annihilation of Amurika.

it is also a lot less embarrassing talking about news issues than discussing someone's personal life...and then becoming the object of gossip.

what else can you talk about after sports and the weather, when you want to vent a little steam.

I think it's good and bad....
good that they are aware of what is going on and aren't so jaded, that they were still sensitive enough to have a reaction
bad that they become so obsessed by the info that they harp on it.

but for a lot of folks...I think it takes their minds off of their own personal problems

" that always takes the position of being an outraged citizen?"

I... work for local government. 'Nuff said. lol.

That's the one takeaway from the Covey "Seven Steps" books that I really remember - "work within your CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE" - keeps me from getting overly exercised about things that happen in the world over which i have no control.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I have a few of these folks involved with my daily life and they always seem to be outraged by something that was reported by the media. It's usually something blown way out of proportion (my opinion, of course) but regardless of what it is they're currently outraged about it always seems to have a theme of DOOM FOR US ALL!

These folks are NOT the Drama Queens or the Negative Nancy types I usually talk about but they are in the same category of mine; "God Lord, get over it!"

Do you work with folks like this? Maybe a close or distant relative that always takes the position of being an outraged citizen?
