The Summer Institute of Linguistics is a real thing, but not a very well-respected organization. They translate the bible into indigenous languages in an effort to convert the heathen.

These days they go by SIL International, as "Summer Institute of Linguistics" is so reviled.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

My mother-in-law told me the same thing about the Slovak language. She said there was the peasant version and the aristocrat version. Similar, but some words and accents were different.

Okay, I have to admit the back and forth about Spanish vs. Mexican is cracking me up. There are so many different versions and dialects in the Spanish language that sometimes it is hard to converse with someone who is from a different region. It can be possible to distinguish where someone if from if you know some of the phrases most common to the regions. The "crazy Mexican grandma" is more of an attitude than anything. Think of any older woman yelling in a romance language. They have this attitude and passion that is just amazing to me.

As one of the "older" ladies, I get calls from companies affiliated with Medicare. They always want me to allow Medicare send me a new meter. I have diabetes. I polity tell them that I have a new meter this year and Medicare will not allow another. Thank-you for your time. And then I hang-up. Maybe this might be a way you might want to explore?

God gives me every day and I am thankful. I hop to my goals daily.

Instituto Lingüístico de Verano? Sounds legit emoticon

Seriously though. There are MAAAAAAANY different accents in Mexico, Mexicans from Monterrey sound nothing like Mexicans from MC or Mexicans from the west coast. Even in Mexico City there are at least 3 different accents AND NO, None of them sounds like a "crazy Mexican grandma". Same thing in Colombia so YES sometimes it is very difficult to tell if someone is Mexican or not -even for us- but of course, for you LADYCJM it would be impossible so don't lie to be popular emoticon

i know that, lol... just sayin'... *if* grandma was speaking Nahuatl, you couldn't really argue if someone were to suggest she was speaking "mexicano"... well. I suppose one could argue but hey. Who am I to question the Instituto Lingüístico de Verano?

We have caller ID and screen our calls. We don't answer if we don't recognize the number. If there is anyone who calls with an unknown number and they really want to get in touch with us, we believe they will leave a message.

It has been noted at our house that the national "do not call list" isn't working very well!

"wrong numbers" - say "sorry you have the wrong number" and END OF STORY.

"repeat wrong numbers" - if you want to go the extra mile to help the caller out, ask them what number they are dialling. That will help to determine whether the problem is, they're dialling wrong vs they have the wrong number written down. Tell them "Well that's the number you reached, but there's nobody here by that name, you must have it written down wrong" or "no, you've dialled wrong." If you don't want to do this, or if you can't understand the caller, or the caller is confused or rude and you just want to get rid of them? HANG UP, REPEAT AS REQUIRED. END OF STORY.

On the language issue - what if "grandma" is chatting at you in Nahuatl, hmm, hmm?? emoticon

I often CAN tell Mexicans from Colombians and make a general guess about where in the world someone is from based on accent, vocabulary, word choice, etc. However, I am a linguist and I speak SPANISH.

Calling the Spanish language Mexican doesn't strike me as racist--it just seems ignorant. Could your relatives be talking about "dialecto" Lady JCM? The many native/indigenous languages in Mexico often get lumped together under this label.

Eowyn, people are just absurd. I love it the most when someone calls me and asks with a grumpy voice-who's there? I say-who did you call? once a bank searching for a client with a debt pestered me about a month , not believing he wasn't there. they only stopped when I said the magic word police.
and " lady" , there's no such thing as mexican language. I think your cousins made fun of you.and I'm pretty sure someone who actually lives in Mexic knows better what he speaks. and you have many latinos there who speak spanish, that grandma could be not mexican at all.
there , one more "judgmental" azhat for you :D

Several years ago we were getting calls for a motel from different people. Some people would get very mad and not believe that we were not the motel. Most people were not jerks though. The numbers were not that similar. They weren't actually calling the wrong number either- there was a technical issue sending the calls our way. It got fixed. The calls stopped.

I think people should just be nice and polite on either end. It is just a wrong number. Don't argue. Don't get mad. State the facts and hang up. Get caller id and don't answer calls from numbers you do not know. If you are getting a lot of wrong numbers, maybe talk to your phone company... see if your number could have belonged to someone else in the past or some other technical issue might be happening.

I had an attorney's office who kept calling my home phone for someone and it seemed that they didn't believe me when I told them they had the wrong number. They were asking things like did the person ever live there, how long have you had this number. It seemed they were having trouble finding this person. I told them I was not responsible if someone gave my phone number to them, trying to avoid them. Anyone can just pick a phone number out of the air if they don't want to give their own. I have done it myself, just not to an attorney or any other important person. LOL After all that, they would call back a week later for that same person. Finally they gave up, or found the person another way.

There also were a few ppl who kept calling back even though I kept telling them they have the wrong number! This makes me think that they have questionable motives! Getting the wrong number once, is an honest mistake, but to call the same wrong number repeatedly is just asking for trouble!

I told them off when they called the 2nd time onwards; but they kept calling and calling. It got so bad that I had to shut off my mobile or even change the number completely. These are real crackpots!

Wow, a bunch of judgmental azhats on this post.

I refer to my Mexican relatives the way they refer to them selves. If you can't take my cousins joke for what is was that is your problem. Get a sense of humor folks, my relatives have one. They laugh at people like you who can't get a giggle overs teen girls excuse for not doing well in a class. (BTW, she graduated with honors and a full 4 year scholarship).

And if they want to refer to their heritage and language as Mexican then that is what they should do. They are proud of their heritage and I'm proud of them.

I don't block the lady because I think she is making an honest mistake. It's not a big deal. I think she would like to know she is not reaching her party. If I dial the wrong number and leave a message I would appreciate knowing it, especially so I won't bother the person again.

I don't answer my cell phone or landline if I don't recognize the number. If it's important they will leave a message. Otherwise, there are too many idiotic people who are calling and manage to get around the Do Not Call list. So it's easier to just not answer. Sometimes the voice mails are hilarious, especially the wrong number ones, but I've found it's easier to just ignore them.
Basically, it's not worth getting upset or worked up over. Yes, it's stupid but it's someone else's stupidity and to stop having to deal with them you just have to hang up and not answer if/when they call again. Just because they call doesn't mean you have to answer.

You don't even realize that Mexicans speak Spanish, but still you can tell when someone is Mexican just because they sound like "every mad Mexican Grandma you have ever heard"?

Wow... that's smart, it's amazing. I mean, Even though I'm Mexican I have trouble trying to distinguish Mexicans from Colombians, or other Latinos....

BTW, I speak Spanish... ALL Mexicans do. If your "mexican" cousins don't.... well.......
I guess there's something they aren't telling you....

Ok, I will admit to making an assumption but... she sounds like every mad Mexican Grandma I have ever heard! And I have heard a few over the years! She sounds exactly like my cousins mother in law when she is mad and yelling at one of the kids. The few words I understand sound like she is chewing out a kid for not doing something they were supposed to do.
You can tell a bit over the phone about people. Male and female is usually easy, but not always. Accents, words chosen, tone of voice can tell you a bit about age and where someone is from.
When I have called her back to tell her she has the wrong number she sounds like a nice older lady. I'm just glad she is not mad at me when she is yelling!

I guess people have different slang expressions from different countries but that happens whether it is Spanish or English or any other language.

Wrong numbers can be funny but it pays to be courteous...You never know if the person will turn around and start calling you to bother you

The "Do Not Call List" only keeps telemarketers away, but NOT political parties, Charities, Religious entities, etc. That is why we still get these annoying calls. Pay attention to the number or read the caller ID right away, and if you don't recognize it, don't pick up the phone. Some people always make the phone take messages, and never pick up the phone.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I have learned not to pick up the telephone when I don't recognize the name or number, especially when the call is not an area code I am familiar with. I figure if it's important the person will leave a message. I have only recently started doing this, it save a lot of aggravation and annoyances. Sadly, with advancing technology, being on the 'Do not call' list does not mean much. Lately, a lot of the odd calls are coming from 702 area code. emoticon

I have caller ID. So if someone calls and I don't recognize the number, I don't answer the phone. If the call is important, they can leave a message and I will call them back.

Even though I am on the do not call list for telemarketers, I still get plenty of calls from political groups asking for my vote or charities asking for donations or some other company asking if I'd like to participate in a survey.

I will even get the occasional wrong number. now that's refreshing. LOL !!!

a while ago, I kept getting a call from a man asking if his taxes were done or not. I guess he thought he was calling his accountant. You'd think that when he heard my voice mail message, he would have caught on that I was NOT his accountant.

I have a Mexican Lady who calls my cell fairly regularly and yells at me in Mexican for about 5 minutes. She sounds like an older lady, not a kid
I don't speak Mexican and have no idea who this lady is.

When I answer I try to tell her she has the wrong number ...not real effective.

I've tried calling her back after dinner time and she has on occasion given the phone to someone who speaks English and they apologize and delete my number. I think my number is very close to someone in her families and she enters it when she calls using her memory instead of the phones!

I've started texting her a polite message that she has the wrong number. It's worked for the last week.....

I've taken to not answering the phone when I don't recognize the number. If it's important, they'll leave a message, and I'll call them back.

When someone calls here and asks for "Mrs. X" I just immediately say, "I'm sorry, but you have the wrong number". There must be a new pharmacy in the area with a similar phone number to ours, because lately we've gotten a lot of calls with people launching into convoluted discussions about their prescriptions. I just interupt them with "I'm sorry, but you have the wrong number". Sometimes I may sound a bit rude on the phone.... but basically we pay for a phone in our home for OUR convenience, not theirs.

Personally, I would have hung up on him after you politely told him he had the wrong number and he totally disregarded your knowledge of who you are. And I work in a call center; I hate hang ups, especially when they assume I am selling something when all I want to do is confirm an appointment! emoticon

I was just minding my own business during dialysis when my mobile rang. The caller said "Ms. X, this is the phone company". "But I'm not Ms. X", I replied. He then proceeded to argue, "But this is Ms. X's number!". I was getting riled at this point! As if I don't know my own name! Then he proceded to ask, isn't this (phone number) before he realised midway that he had dialled the wrong number! Fancy insisting that I'm Ms. X when I'm not Ms. X! How stupid!
