I just looked back to my post on May 7th on this thread, and realized how much stronger I am today than I was even then.

I walked a mile for the first time in over 4 years yesterday.

Feeling so much better.

Just thinking that having a good routine helps when it comes to eating well, taking vitamins, exercising, so that it's more habit and you don't get thrown when a curveball comes at you. Still, not needing to be perfect and forgiving yourself for forgetting, or not following your routine, and remembering that things will even out, helps.

Jen, you are welcome to any encouragement that I can give.

Still have a tough time with food. I get tired easily after having so many surgeries, and I think I just get weak because I am tired. I am getting more exercise most day, and I think it is just going to take time to get all of the stupid drugs out of my system, and to continue to heal.

I am still better than I was, so that is motivating me to do the best that I can do, even if it is not what I would like.

I can really identify with the issues you are having. Have been there, done that. I do understand how it makes you feel, but try to remember, you had to take care of yourself the best you could.

Glad you are feeling better, and will be getting around better soon.

I have had a curveball. I was put on bed rest for a few days because of disk stuff. I've been in alot of pain for the last 2+ weeks. Today I can feel it finally starting to calm down. I did have alot of pain but I could walk better (to the bathroom and back/ to the kitchen and back). I feel so yucky because I've been on medication and have been eating more unhealthy than usual because I've been too much in pain to go to the store to get the fresh produce I like to eat. I also feel like it's been a complete waste of time. I have gotten nothing accomplished except watch t.v. I am feeling yucky about myself both physically and mentally. I did so well for the 8 weeks previous to the injury issue. I was so proud of eating more healthy and eating in my calorie range and leaning on God to help me have self-control. Anyways... just expressing. Dear Jesus please wash me clean of this negativeness, heal me and give me a fresh start both mentally and physically. Amen.
Thanks for listening guys! Jen :) emoticon

Good for you for doing what you are able to do, and for using exercise to relieve stress and to comfort you. Great job.

MARY

I too am trying to do the 10 minute a day commitment. Most days, I get about 30 minutes in anyway. Sometimes, I have to count the work I do around the house because my knees are not strong enough to do both. But, I do get at least 10 minutes in most days.

I do great all day long with my eating, but someone else enters my body in the evening. Working to kick them out. Think it is the 8 year old girl inside who is throwing tantrums. Trying to make her feel better about herself, so she will stop.

JUNE

Glad you survived all of the curve balls. I understand about taking care of an ill relative. No matter how much help you have, it is still very stressful.

I am wishing you a much better MAY!

I had a lot of curveballs thrown at me in April. I am helping to support a sick relative, which is mentally and physically draining. I had good days and bad days, but I made it through. I'm aiming to have a better May.

I find that when I can't do what I want to do, I do something else. Sometimes I just sit on the sofa, if I'm not well, and do arm lifts or deep breathing. When I have a situation that angers me I work out vigorously, when I need comfort, I do some yoga or stretching. whatever happens, I do "something'

What helped me was to commit to "Just 10 Minutes" of exercise a day. Then, no matter what else happened, I got at least 10 minutes done. On many days, the biggest problem for me was just to start the exercise so my "Just 10 Minutes" commitment helped overcome that inertia. And if I was really, really busy, then "Just 10 Minutes" was better than nothing. Maybe it would help you too?
Good luck!

You may still be sick so I wouldn't work out. I might go out and get some fresh air and just take a stroll but nothing strenuous. Or go to the park and sit on a swing and kick back & forth.
It's movement so you are going to burn some calories - just not a lot.

Focus instead on extra healthful eating. Splurge on some fresh produce you might not buy otherwise. Buy a whole fresh pineapple and enjoy it. Or get some nectarines or berries fresh and just coming into season.

May you need something visual. Get a fashion magazine, find a swimsuit style you like, and hang it where you can see it often - like on the bathroom mirror. Think of how good you'll feel by summer when you can get out, have some fun at the pool or beach, enjoy the sunshine to lift your spirits, and have a good time. That will make you feel better, having something to look forward to and concentrating on you being happy & healthy.

Life is filled with highs and lows and you just have to hold on and realize the ride is what counts, not always the destination.

I knew a crisis was approaching and sent out an S.O.S. like this 2 weeks ago. The best answer, for me, was to take a break for the two weeks, BUT to continue doing either strength training or cardio every day. I think it was great advise because doing my 20-40 min of cardio every day kept me feeling like I was in control when there was chaos all around me.
What I can When I can is great advise.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I LIKE exercising but when major life events happen it's easy to be overwhelmed. I made exercise my priority every day as a non-negotiable thing that is 'my time' every day. After a few months I didn't even think about it anymore, it was just part of my daily routine and I never think anymore about whether or not to.

Of course bear in mind I'm interpreting your post as you feel unmotivated. If you were saying that you physically have an illness or something stopping you from doing it obviously that is an entirely different thing.

Thank you both for sharing your stories. It is always a good reminder that I am not alone in any of this.

I am going back to my psychologist tomorrow morning. Have not been to see her since before my first knee surgery in August. I know she will help me as well.

Life has thrown me some crap pretty consistently. I can't give-in. I have to keep fighting. I have to constantly believe that something better is on the way.

Hoping you're feeling better today. Know that the fighter in you is still there. Know that good times are around the corner!

HOPE: Holding On, Praying Earnestly...from Guidepost Magazine

I'm working my way back to the size I want to be.
On a journey for strength and good health.

I can totally relate--back surgery a year & a half ago really threw me for a loop. And as a result, I gained 20 lbs!

The thing that kept me going was my daily exercise. I was told NO exercise for the first few weeks post-op, but as soon as my doctor gave the ok, I was back on my treadmill! Albeit, walking much more slowly, and for less time...but it helped reset my brain back to "happy" & "I can do it!"

For me, exercising first thing every morning is key--I just can't make myself do it if I wait until later. I get up & get going on that treadmill before anything else. And if I have places to be early in the morning--then treadmill time starts REALLY early & might be fast & furious instead of a long workout.

I always do something though--and it helps keep me from getting sick, keeps me from getting depressed, keeps me going! And when the road really gets rocky (because, hey, life is NOT a straight line!)...then I just forgive myself for eating badly & remind myself that 15 minutes of exercise is better than 15 minutes on the couch. And if need be, praying while I exercise never hurt either.

Do it because you need to, but more importantly, exercise because you are worth it! You deserve to be healthy & fit & happy!

It Is What It Is.... :)

thank you for the kind words & motivation, sometimes it does help to throw yourself a little pity party, actually I got right back on track this morning(besides I don't have any of the food that would have derailed me in the house) when you stand looking in the fridge & realize there isn't any of the old comfort food in there you have no choice but to eat healthy. and it's to far to go to the nearest store to pick up junk food. emoticon

JANICE So very sorry for your tough losses. God Bless and Prayers to get you through this difficult period in your life.

I agree with Busygranny, you have to allow yourself to grieve and during this time you just do the best you can.

This is not a diet, this is a lifestyle journey, and there are bumps along the road, big and little. We respond as best we are able, and take care of ourselves in such a painful time.

Progress not perfection.

Sending good thoughts and wishes and my condolences for your loss and pain.

Walked 21 minutes on the treadmill. Did 5 minutes on the recumbent elliptical, and walked for about 5 minutes.

The exercise helps me so much with mood and physical strength.

I am working hard to be motivated.

your mind is a powerful tool
even with problems there are sunny days there is always something positive to look at. you can choose to look at the problem or you can choose to look at the solution. the latter is a lot more helpful.
if your co workers are not getting along fighting causing problems take a look at each one or maybe just the one upsetting you and look for something good it may only be the blouse she's wearing or the hair colour or the neatness of her desk whatever but by looking at the good you don't focus on the bad and more good will come.
you can only control yourself, and what you allow to affect you by focusing on the good you only bring good to you. my mother died of cancer it was horrible but what I realized was it gave me a chance to be with her closer than I would have been and that time is the most precious time I ever had.
sometimes illness is our body telling us to step back and take a good look at where we are going what path we are choosing and if it is in harmony with ourselves.

I also try to remember that I am NOT in charge. Hard lesson to learn when you think you have to be in control. It is just an illusion. Thanks for the reminder.

KMS

I can totally relate to the long injury and confinement period. It is very difficult to begin again, but you can do it. Take it slow, and remember where you are now, and work towards where you were before the injury.

One day at a time, one small change at a time, and as OZZY says, we can only be in charge of the things that we can do.

Good luck, love yourself, and treat yourself as you would a beloved friend or family member.

JIM

You are so right. We do know what is best for us. I just have to get back to that. Thanks

Kids can be great motivators. I have 3 great nieces and a great nephew. They knew me before when I could take them to the park, and walk and play. They also have seen me go through the tough stuff of the last three years, and when I do things with them now, they are very encouraging and accepting. Gotta love them so much.

I am getting up now and going to the gym to walk on the treadmill. Monday I rode my exercise bike for 25 minutes, yesterday I rode it for 30 minutes.

Trying to get all of the muscles back to working order!

God Bless and thank you all.

My curve ball is a 9-month injury. I am starting back up with my circuit and weight training, but after doing just cardio for 9 months and not really pushing myself, I have gotten into tha =t routine and am finding it difficult to get back to my old work-out habits.

Best motivation for me is seeing other people's before/after pics and to look at pics of myself from right before my injury. Tells me I did it already and can do it again!

Thank you for beginning this thread.

I found this motivational thread, and one other this morning, and I am sorely in need of the motivation.

I have had 3 major surgeries in the last 3 years. Had been unable to exercise at all for much of that time.

Healing and getting stronger physically, but I have discovered that during that 3 years, I have actually lost many of the lessons I learned on SP, and just about myself in general.

I am beginning again, every day is the first day of the rest of my life. I have to learn to love myself again, to forgive myself for my mistakes, and to remember to take it all "one day at a time, one small change at a time".

Those are some of the lessons that I used to lose 70 pounds 6 years ago, and maintain the lose for 3 years before having all of the physical issues that took me off the road on my journey.

Spark People is the only reason that I have not gained All of the weight back that I lost, and kept me from gaining even more during this difficult period.

No matter what, I have continued here on the threads where my support is, and just done the best I could.

I loved reading all of the ideas and thoughts from all of you on this thread, and the one I read just before this one.

I will be coming back here to reread your ideas, thoughts and suggestions.

I know that all I can do is the best that I can do today.

One day at a time, one small change at a time, I repeat this to remind myself!

Best to all of you and thanks to all of you.

Bonnie

I am also looking for some serious motivation! Two month's ago I got two job offers from two very exciting jobs that I had been interviewing for. I picked which one I wanted, quit my job and took a week off before starting the new job. In that week off I fell and broke my ankle. With no insurance.

Now it's 6 weeks later. New job is insane and challenging and exciting, I love it. And I am moving next week (so there's packing, cleaning and moving) all while on crutches. And there's more expenses because we had to hire movers since I am not able to help much.

I've gained 12 pounds and it is so depressing. I'm starting physical therapy tomorrow. Hoping I can get back to exercising as soon as possible. Not only have I gained weight, but I look less muscular now.

I am finally able to cook for myself again - so this week my baby step is to start tracking my food again. I made it through yesterday, went over my target, but I still tracked. I'm drinking my water and when I can exercise again I will.

But man is it hard to stay motivated when you're so overwhelmed! All of my Spark friends have really helped me get through the worst of it and get back to being positive.

Yesterday was a super-stressful Monday, I was the only one in the office for most of the morning, AND I had to leave at 11am to get my daughter to school, so I was calling around trying to find SOMEONE who could cover for an hour! I ended up having a Starbuck's latte AND stopped for a Snicker bar on the way home - not the best way to deal with stress. I planned to hit the elliptical when I got home but ended up feeding the grandbaby instead, oh well! But today will be calmer, today I will make better choices and today I will get some exercise. emoticon emoticon

Exercise always make me feel better, that's why I do it.

Eating crap makes me feel like crap, that's why I eat real whole foods, they make me feel great.

A hard cardio session helps me get rid of tension and stress.

Exercise. It gives me time to think, and it sends those endorphins coursing through my body. It does not solve curve balls, but helps to understand and deal with them.

I just want to thank all ya'll for all the inspiration I have just read. Today was an emotional curve ball for me but I stayed pretty well on my path. Tomorrow I go to my nutritionist's office, I am excited to let her see my Sparkpeople everything! And the plus is...I get to weight myself 3 weeks after my doctor's appointment that I broke my plateau. So I will get to see if I am still going down or what. I figure I have since I have added chair video workouts with Coach Natalie and doing more stairs at my church and walking more. Not to mention eating better. But the main point of this post is, thank you all for all the wisdom of your own slips, slides, falls or tumbles and that ya'll would share it would me.....a total stranger...who needs a support system and feels she has found it here with a Spark! Thanks!

God gives me every day and I am thankful. I hop to my goals daily.

It's true that curve balls is what life's about - serious health problems, work-related stress. In my case, DH's health - seeing some development that knocks me off balance. I aim to average 50 fitness minutes a day, but today i was knocked off balance and I did 6 minutes. I try to simmer down more quickly than I used to. I'll make up the minutes tomorrow.

Sometimes when things are going awry it is hard to think of positive things but that is one of the best solutions when lift throws that curve ball that you did not expect. I experienced an unexpected marital breakup and divorce and that was truly an unexpected life changing curve ball but prayer, Psalm 61, Psalm 62 verses 5-8, and Psalm 77 verses 10-15. I can shout when I read those verses.

All things are possible if you only believe, even losing 15 pounds

You need to change the way you think about it is the easy answer. Hard to do, but it is the truth. Two weeks of not exercising is not a failure. Getting depressed about it will hurt you.

If you read the testimonies on this site, you will see that a lot of the people who work this process as slowly making lifestyle changes they can stick with lose the weight within one or two years, even with plateaus and even with a few weeks off. And that is people with 100+ pounds to lose.

Don't focus on the failure. Getting sick is not a failure in the first place.

If now you have a time constraint time, go back to the 10 minutes a day exercise. If it is more that you don't have time to get to the gym - choose a different type of exercise. Do one of the short videos on this site or walk for 10 minutes. Leslie Sansone's 1 mile walk is a little over 15 minutes.

Multitask. I often walk while the microwave is going at lunch. If you watch even one television program walking in place during the commercials can give you the time to get your minutes in.

I had to really be ready and committed to a lifestyle change before starting to work a program here. I've had several challenges because of my health. I've had several curve balls come my way. I just have to get up every day and start my program again.

had a over controlling manager that did nothing and now they and his boss were demoted and supervise no one.

document your concerns on email and print them out then over time them are easy enough to hang when you go over their heads.

good luck
