Does your gym offer a class? Classes usually take an hour and you get a workout in.

Thanks for the great responses. I did look into my gym for the morning exercise classes, so may take one to see how it goes. I have been testing myself for the most beneficial form of exercise with in a 20 - 45 minute range. I have been on the elliptical machine for 25 minutes and can burn around 200 calories in that time period. I will also do 20 minutes on the treadmill and that would put me in a 120 calorie burn range that is really not too good.
You are right about the eating as well so I really have been watching and tracking all food intake. While I am not a big breakfast food person, yogurt, banana w/some granola is about all I can handle early morning. So if I am going to start working out in the morning, I really need to get some food in before the workout.

I workout in the morning before work and the only time I spend more than an hour working out is when I do long runs on the treadmill. Three days a week I do cardio (tempo run of 3-4 miles, speed run of about 3 miles, and a long run of 5+ miles). The other two days I do full body strength training with a quick session (4 minutes) on the rowing machine to warm up. My strength routine takes 30 minutes if the equipment I want is free. I do bench press, assisted pull ups, overhead presses, squats, deadlifts, and horizontal rows. Archimedes is right though, you eat right to lose weight and you exercise to get fit.

Janine,

If you have access to a gym, consider taking a morning class. Most classes run from 30-60 minutes and there are a variety to choose from. You might try a group weight training class called Body Pump. if it's not called pump, it might be called sculpt or flex or something else. a group weight training class would teach you how to use barbells and hand weights. If you don't want to do a weights class, you could try a boot camp. Boot camp classes have become extremely popular. Do you like to dance ? Try a Zumba class. that's a Latin dance fitness workout that's fun and a great workout. Lots of SP members do Zumba.

There's also spinning. Spinning is an indoor group bike class. You might want to check that out, BUT if you take spinning, do make sure you get to class 10 minutes early. the teacher will show you how to set up a bike. don't just hop on a bike. you need to make sure the settings are correct or you'll end up injured. bring a big bottle of water and towel because you will sweat. it's a great workout.

a class would maximize your 45-60 minutes.

Keep in mind that what works for me, might not work for you. there are tons of different things you can do to be fit. You can run, cycle, swim, take martial arts, box, play tennis, golf, ski, roller skate, dance, etc... it's ALL good.

You don't have to workout 2+ hours a day to be fit or lose weight. Because when it comes to losing weight, what matters most is what we eat. Good nutrition is what takes the weight off and keeps it off. Exercise is what keeps our bodies fit.

In short, you can't outrun a bad diet with exercise. If you want to lose weight, you have to eat right and watch your portions first. What you do for exercise depends on what your fitness goals are.

Well it is actually based on the number of reps you do on each machine. The circuit training plans on spark tell you how many reps at what weight.

If you like to swim, 45 min to and 1 hr of swimming is a great all over workout.

How about circuit training? You can pack a lot into a 45 minute workout.

I have a question for the the SP members who work out in the morning. I would love to start working out before work. I would like a routine that I could spend maybe 45 minutes to an hour doing. I like the cardio machines but my workouts are now about 2 hours in the gym when I do all that I want to do while at the gym.

What workouts do you do that maximizes working out in the shortest amount of time allowed?

Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks,
Janine
