Either one should work. If it motivates her to list her highest then that's her choice. She did lose it after all. Congrats !

Summer, I had this conversation with myself and decided to do what you did. When I restarted SP, I hadn't lost much, but decided to start at the point I actually was when I 'returned'.

Do what works for you - Why do you both have to do the same thing anyway? I agree with a previous poster - keep your eyes on your own paper.

It's not a race or a competition, so just how/who are you cheating?

Comparing your results with those of someone else is likely to cause a problem sooner or later.

Do what feels right to you. This journey is all about YOU, Yourself. The rest of the world will benefit by the good things you are doing for yourself, but don't get distracted by that. Just keep your focus on your new healthy habits and how good you feel.

I lost the majority of my weight (quite a lot) years before I ever started posting about weight on the internet, which was years before I ever found the spark site, which I've been on and off for years. I don't track here but use the site's resources and forums and am grateful to spark for providing them.

I change my tracker occasionally to reflect my stage of weight loss/maintenance. My current tracker shows my current "ideal weight" (115) and the weight I was at when I changed the tracker and my current weight.

It represents to me a "maintenance tracker" as my 2014 goal is to stay below 120 and I feel proud and happy when I see the weight tracker well below that but not dipping below my desired 115 (although if it did, it wouldn't throw me off as fluctuations are inevitable).

What I am trying to say (in a long winded fashion) is the tracker is for me, not to represent anything to anyone else. It is an aid in my maintenance. I could not care less what anyone else does with their tracker or how they use the site.

I would say it do it the way that you want to. What difference does it make to anyone but you? As for me, my highest non-pregnant weight was over 200 lbs but I don't want to see that on my ticker. I have not lost a lot since joining Spark. I use the sight to stay in touch with other health conscious people and to stay on track with maintenance.

There is no right or wrong. SP is a tool to be used to help you reach a goal. Use it in whatever way that works best for you. Like others have said, I have changed my tracker as well. I changed the starting weight from 185 to 186 (the 186 was only a few days before I started SP and I got tired of saying 15 pounds, 14 since starting SP) and I have changed my end goal from 158 to 140. 158 was my first goal (put me in the healthy BMI range) and 140 is my final goal. Splitting it up allowed me to feel like I had accomplished something midway through.

Again, in the endit is a tool for you to use in whatever way you want. There is no honest or dishonest as long as you are being honest with yourself, for YOU are the only person that YOU are accountable to.

Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint.- Mark Twain

I like my pre Spark starting weight. A year or two ago I had to recalculate my Spark information and my then weight was 145.

I want people to see where I started. When my ticker said I started at 145 and I offered advice. I always got the you only lost 10 pounds what do you know? That is why it says 165 that way people look at my ticker. They realize I have lost a significant amount of weight. And I might know a thing or two.

"Head games head games, play the games with your mind that you think will work for you.."

When I started... seeing a big number...so far away just was a little depressing for me, so I did mine in increments.

Even now, I still go down in 5 pound increments.

It's whatever works for you ;)

I say do whatever works for you. I've changed the goalposts on my ticker more than once, depending on what I needed or wanted to see.

The date I weighed myself for the first time in (years?) coincided with the day I started Sparking, pretty closely. (Weighed Jan 5, joined Spark on the 8th or 9th). So. I just used that first official weight. Had i "officially" weighed in sooner and known my "true" starting weight to have been higher - I probably would have used the higher weight.... but that's just me.

What I have fiddled with is the goal-weight goalpost. When I started, I understood on an intellectual level that I needed to lose a full 100# but I just... I just couldn't deal with that number. Whether it was honest or not... I didn't want to see it. So my original ticker was "start 245/end 199." It didn't look like the bunny had so far to run, that way. I could cope with a 46# challenge in a way that I just couldn't deal with 100. Once I got close to 199, I dropped my goal to 185 ("BMI overweight/not obese"). And once I passed THAT milestone, I finally felt able to put my ACTUAL desired goal weight on my ticker... the bunny is well past halfway, I can do this!!!!!

Head games head games, play the games with your mind that you think will work for you... if you don't like her idea of using "original start weight' then don't! If you change your mind you can change your ticker at any time, to any values that suit your needs.

Edited by: BUNNYKICKS at: 3/28/2014 (18:20)
Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

Lol, when I started I used my SP starting weight, which like you was lower than my "starting" weight.

Then after a month or so, I changed to my original starting weight - cause after all...I did do the work, why not see it on my ticker every day!

I love REBECANOLA's comment!

Keep your eyes on your own paper.

It doesn't matter what your friend does. It matters what you do and how you feel about what you do.

I can understand why you feel the way you do. If you both started your journey at 200 pounds and she puts in 200 (starting) and you put in 190 (Spark start) and then list a current 185 it looks like she has been more successful then you have been. She has "lost 15#s, you've lost 5."

Our brains play games with us. It's why a price is $19.99 not$ 20.00 and why we 186.7 pounds and not 187!

Your are both right. The starting weight can either be when you started Spark, but it could also be where you started when you decided to lose weight. Whatever works best for you to accomplish your goals.

When I started Spark I didn't know my weight, I just put in the last number I was when I was weighed last. When I weight in a week later, turns out I was 8 pounds lighter. Go figure.

I would list my starting weight as what it was on the day I started the Sparkpeople program. It is more important to me to see where I am at right now and where I need to go then to get reminders from the past.

I wouldn't call it cheating if you want to do it the other way as long as it honestly was your starting weight when you began the journey to lose weight. Neither way is wrong IMO- it is just a preference for how you want to view things. Your friend should do things her way and leave you to do things your way.

The weight on my ticker is my starting weight. I found Spark People a couple months later. I think after I lost the first couple pounds.

Why not? I did the work. It is not dishonest to take credit for the work that you have already done. And believe me I am honest to a fault. I don't have a poker face

A close friend and I began our weight loss journey at the same time at the same weight. She just started Sparking and listed her Starting Weight on her Tracker as the weight she was at her highest, I have been Sparking a few weeks, and listed my starting weight as what it was at the time I Joined. She insists I should do the same to give myself motivation and credit for the hard work already accomplished before joining Spark. I feel since I lost weight Before Sparking, listing my weight at my highest would be like Cheating since I wasn't a member at the time! Thoughts?
