Feeling frustrated is my #1 emotional eating trigger. Drinking wine does not typically lead to healthy food choices or portions, either.

I'm happy that I lost my appetite when I'm anxious or stress because if not I would eat constantly. It's more when I'm bored, so I try to keep myself busy.

Don't put me near a Toblerone or a toffee Symphony bar.

Not getting enough sleep the night before. It makes me crave carbs and fatty foods. If I eat enough of a mix of protein & fat throughout the day, I can usually do okay. But once most of my calories start coming from carbs, I just keep eating...

Does waking up count? Heh. Stress is a trigger for me. I also eat more when I'm bored. Sometimes, a commercial will come on and just trigger me to eat what was advertised.

Great topic!

1. Not eating regularly. On my long day at work I am on campus from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. If I don't pack a lunch or plan ahead I often find myself foraging/snacking/accepting food I hadn't planned for.

2. Anxiety. When I am doing a great deal of grading, I find myself wanting a snack to ease the stress of the work. I told my husband this morning, "I miss self-soothing with comfort food" to which he replied, "No, you don't!" (And he's right!!!).

3. Winding down on nights my husband is working late. Two nights a week I get home two hours before he does. I find myself wanting to relax with a snack before he gets home. This led to about a month of going over my calorie limit (and ultimately keeping me at the same weight for an extra two months).

4. Social anxiety. Particularly at large extended-family functions where I don't know that many people. I used to do the thing that was socially acceptable-- eat away! Now I have to find other things to do to ease that anxiety/boredom/etc.

night-time snacking!!! TV triggers my snacking button! Soooooo, no TV? Maybe a little less! No snacking? Have the healthy ones waiting for me in the refrigerator. I'm not always prepared for the snack attack. I will work on that one!

I can't think of any.

Maybe it's because I periodically and regularly allow myself "binge" days. I limit them, so my weight stays steady. I don't develop intense cravings because I know that if some food appeals to me, I can have it on my "binge" days - two a month.

Don't burn me at the stake :) We all have different methodologies, and my internist is well aware of mine. My blood work is great, I am 62, and he says he has no objections, especially since I've maintained an 80-lb. weight loss for several years.

My triggers are Friday and Saturday nights! The weekend usually means indulging in adult beverages. I have not found a way around this other than complete abstinence. Trying to limit to one or two doesn't seem to work for me. I've only been able to abstain a couple of times. I usually just go ahead and drink, but try to make better choices.....like very light beer and no mixers with sugary soda. If I do drink a mixed drink, I will mix it with club soda or soda water to minimize the calories, sodium, and sugar. I have found, though, that the older I get the less I drink. My other trigger is chips and dips....mmmmm!~

I am usually pretty good during the day until the few hours before going to bed, which is the worse time. A little nibble here and a little nibble there sure does add up. Trying to change that. One day at a time.

For me, I would say feeling too much pressure and feeling like everybody is expecting to succeed to the point where I am so afraid of failure that I self-sabotage. Usually I only get off track for one meal, though. It makes me feel yucky so I remember why I eat healthy in the first place... for me to feel good.

i must say my trigger is life it self i never get a moment to just focus on me;being a single mom never getting a break except when i get to hit the gym but thats only twice a week for an hour;then i am struggling to find five minutes to my self to focus on my healthy life style either i am at work with a consumer or on my other job at the high school ;and after a long day at work i am mommy for the rest of the day and night,it gets so bad i can't even eat or use the rest room in peace let alone watch on t.v. program in peace. but once my daughter is sleep thats when i want to eat because finally i have the opportunity to eat in peace.then it becomes so tasty i just want it to last.gotta get my emotions under control.

Whenever I am stressed out or frustrated I am tempted to eat junk. Before I started logging my food, I would just buy some chocolate or other junk food and eat it in the car and I would feel temporarily better or I would raid the pantry and eat chips. Now I go outside and take a walk or get some fresh air instead of eating. Logging what I eat really holds me accountable for my food choices so I don't make bad choices.

Oh Just reading all of your trigger foods makes me HUNGRY lol But I would have to say the worst is . Ice cream although those Reeses PBC are also a down fall ! I think ice cream is well just so smooth and creamy and it really isnt filling at all like say cake or pie ! lol it just slips down , One thing that helps me when I do eat ice cream is putting it in a cone instead of a bowl , it harder to over do and when a half a cup is in a bowl it looks so very tiny ! lol

Bread and pasta are my biggest trigger foods. I do best to avoid them altogether. Anytime I have pasta, I want second helpings, even if I'm not still hungry. And give me a loaf of italian bread and a stick of butter and I will finish it off in one day. I have been avoiding these foods for a couple months now. Lost some weight and feel so much better.

My bad choice triggers are boredom, emotionally upset or feeling like someone is controlling me( Like I know my partner is trying to help on some level, but when he gives me a look of disapproval it sets me off on a binge eating that I secretly do in my car) . My bad choice foods have always been Wendy's and cupcakes.

For me, its very hard to just sit and relax. I used to drink a lot, and that was my way of relaxing. I know that when I sit and watch tv now, that I need to make a commitment not to eat or drink. Eating is during meal or snack time, but not just to do because I cant sit still. Same with alcohol... I cant drink alcohol while I watch tv. In fact until Im used to this new lifestyle drinking alcohol is out completely.

My bad choices are triggered due to stress. I mean any stress. It can be work problems, relationship problems or family problems. I am learning now to journal my issues whether than eat them away and even my boyfriend has agreed junk food needs to stay out of the house :-) hopefully is will help when stress arises

The only difference between a bad day and a good day, is your attitude!

Really it's ANYTHING when I am over-hungry or have been depriving myself with restrictive eating. Once I get that hunger headache, I am vulnerable to anything I see. My go-to food for binge eating has always been potatoes, though. French fries and potato salad, especially.

Bad choice triggers for me are when I go to restaurants. I find it hard to make good choices when there are so many Choices. Ice cream is hard to resist. I do well when I'm at home. I'm able to control my portions and monitor what I eat.

I have a real problem with eating because I am bored or alone. I only work part time and from the time I get home until the husband gets home can be very tricky for me. The winter is worse, however I have been making progress with this by spending more time on spark and now that the weather is nicer getting outdoors more.

I have two bad choice triggers.

the worst one is my job. I have a desk job where I sit in front of a computer most of the time. When I am "bored" by work I start to feel hungry. We have vending machines on every floor and a convenience store downstairs in the lobby with lots of bad choices. I try to bring healthy snacks from home but if I don't watch myself, I race through them all at once.

my second trigger is my husband wanting to eat fast food for supper. it is really hard to plan meals for two when one of the two is not committed to eating healthier. now I am making my own smaller meals and he is making his own meals. this seems to be working.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Even the longest and most difficult ventures have a starting point.

I was just realizing that another of my bad choice triggers (not food) is trying to pay my bills with very limited income. That will send me after ice cream. Or if there is cake nearby, cake and ice cream. Or chips and dip. Mostly ice cream, though. I guess that is my main comfort food.

Wendi, I understand having the "people making you feel stupid" trigger, too. They usually don't just make me feel stupid, they tell me I am. That can trigger a run for the ice cream, too.

My problem isn't so much the "trigger" but how much of it I can eat. I literally can eat like a lumbar jack. It's so obnoxious. But now what I do is drink and drink and drink. I eat just to full my body. We all have bad days though and let me tell you I love Pizza and everything that I shouldn't!

Happy Thursday everyone!

I LOVE this board - thanks for the question! Can't wait to read everyone's answers - definitely looking for some inspiration on this topic!

My biggest trigger is when someone treats me like I'm stupid - intentionally or not. My dad and brother both have the habit of making me feel stupid, probably not intentionally, but I have to be very careful around both of them. But it's not just them, either. My immediate reaction to this is always chocolate - and I will eat anything in my path until I get some. It's always better for my calorie intake if I just eat the chocolate to begin with. Unfortunately, last Sunday, it was a half a bag of chocolate chips.

Another pattern I have just recently noticed is when I get home from work, I immediately seek out chocolate & a salty snack. I can have a perfect day from a calorie standpoint, not even thinking about it, but when I walk in the door from work, I find myself searching for anything that has chocolate in it. Last night, I mixed chocolate chips with coconut & pretzels for super-sweet and salty fix. Then I felt terrible about myself : (

Thanks for the question - I bookmarked this thread so I can come back and read all of the responses when I have more time!!

When I've gone too long without eating or I'm really tired, I make bad food choices. I'll eat whatever's sitting out. Yesterday I ate handfuls of shredded cheese and sunflower seed kernels... I like cheese but not THAT much! It's just because I was hungry and it was there.

When I'm tired from stress, and can't even motivate myself to go to the gym. I know that usually means that I've not consumed enough calories, so I rationalize an extra helping of a comfort food to pull me out of my doldum.

When I am ignored by husband of 21 years. He works at night to not see me. Sleeps on the couch or on the computer all day. He has 2 days off ignores kids and my self. He sleeps on days off or is on computer. Enough! Time for me to lose the weight and move on from husband. My dream Osaka man is out there waiting for me! emoticon

Wine before bedtime. Thinking this will help me sleep. Yes, it did, BUT, I wanted and did eat everything in site before I went to bed. It makes me so hungry, very bad choice, lol! Have to limit that, for sure. emoticon

Artificial sweeteners, along with most forms of carbohydrates make me want more carbohydrates and/or sweets. It is like a little is not ever enough, and there needs to be more and more, or I need to taste one more thing.

I'm trying to cut these things out of my diet to the extent that I can. No more baked goods (even gluten free/low carb ones), and as few artificially sweetened things as I can.

My bad choice triggers are sugary items that my husband, who does the shopping, for the most part. Also when he or others in the family used sweet products in front of me, when I've just finished working out. I ask myself don't I deserve to have this too after...........! emoticon
emoticon
I believe that sugary things left out are my biggest trigger, I need to think through the food and remember what it is really like moments or days later, constantly fighting the desire and then succumbing to the desire to eat more sweets to calm and feed the obsession.

I'm better off just not to pick it up if it really is a trigger food. emoticon emoticon

I have came to realize that I am an emotional eater when stressed, using that excuse of "What does it matter if I have (insert food here.) I deserve if after the day I've had!"

I think boredom is another. I have to have something keeping me occupied and I think that food tends to be a last resort for me. Or what I THINK is a last resort.

Maybe it's all just excuses...

Feeling like my life is out of control is the main trigger for me. I'm haivng some really tough challenges now in my marriage. I've recognized these would normally trigger me, and I'm really working hard to develop alternate ways to cope with emotions and stay on track. It's not easy, but a month/a year from now I want to be able to look back and be proud of my strength and courage. My health is worth the effort.

Good luck to all on this board...I'm rooting for ya!

Really? When I bake, I know EXACTLY what's in there, and eggs especially gross me out, so I don't eat a lot of baked goods, as you'd imagine, if I KNOW that there are eggs in them, though I'm told I kick heinee as a baker.
