"They are also really high in sodium and make me bloat."

Which ones are high in sodium?

Diet Pepsi has 35 mg... nowhere near high.

I agree, Crystal light and Mio are like diet soda without the carbonation.

I don't drink diet sodas. They make me binge. They are also really high in sodium and make me bloat.

I prefer water

Diet soda can have artificial sweeteners, preservatives, artificial colors, caffeine, sodium. Crystal Light has artificial sweeteners, preservatives and artificial colors.
Water does not have all those things.

You have to decide for yourself if it concerns you to consume all those extra ingredients.
I prefer to just drink plain water.

You can flavor water with natural ingredients like lemon or lime juice, fruit, cucumber, mint, etc. www.theyummylife.com/Flavored_Water

Check out the Mayo Clinic web site. As far as they are concerned if it is liquid it's water.
We actually get most of our water needs from the foods we eat. The 8 glasses per day started back in the 60s and there is no proof that we really need to drink an additional 64 ounces a day.

There are people who honestly believe that artificial sweeteners will kill you. There are people who are sensitive to them. Those people should not use them.

As for real sugar being better for you then an artificial sweetener, I think someone really hates artificial sweeteners!

Use what works for you.

i only drink water. on the off chance that I sip on a diet soda, i drink plenty of water to wash it from my system. I am on the wagon that says artificial sweetners cause most of the diseases. Doesn't artificial tell you anything.
i don't worry about just calories. I like quality calories- ones filled with antioxidants, good minerals, good vitamins and something NOT created in a plant. Pink, blue and yellow packets will never ever be in my house. Unlike some of the other posters who have not seen the evidence of what artificial sweetners can do to a body, I have and it is scary to think that people willingly put that crap in their bodies.

I love diet sodas, but I have heard that they can make it harder to lose weight because they make you crave sweets. I don't know if that's true or not, but I am trying to cut out diet soda now. I mostly drink water with a little bit of cranberry juice in it.

I am a diabetic. So it's either diet soda or no soda at all. I limit my soda intake to one per day, not because I am fearful of the sweeteners but because it has a lot of sodium in it and causes a lot of fluid retention if I drink much of it. I treat myself to one diet drink in the evenings and it helps satisfy my urge for sweets and wanting to eat. I will also drink a diet drink when we go out to eat because I hate city water with chlorine in it and even if I order tea, I still don't like the taste because of the water it's made with. At home, I drink water (well water) all day and sometimes a glass of decaf. unsweet tea. When I am out, I opt for bottled water when possible, otherwise diet soda. And I don't think a diet drink a day is going to hurt me. Certainly can't hurt me like sending my blood sugars sky high with a regular soda!

Here is a Spark Article on choosing beverages:

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_art
icles.asp?id=605

Personally.... I can't see as how a sugar Coke could be better for a person than a diet Coke. It's a lot of empty calories. And I don't agree that artificial sweeteners cause all the problems, that you see claimed around the 'net.

I drink a lot of water-- tap water. Because it's really cheap and readily available. I just have a problem paying a lot of money for water with a bunch of chemicals added to it. Although occasionally, I'll use one of those Crystal Light packets that you add to water. I can get 3 glasses of flavored water out of one of those packets (I don't like it "full strength".)

I think it's up to each person to take a look at the science, and make their own decision about what they themselves will choose.

There is a lot of media hype and book sellers making claims that artificial sweetners cause about every ailment you can imagine. I don't think there is good evidence to support it and I drink diet soda every day. I do drink water sometimes but prefer my diet coke.

I take a stronger stance when people claim sugared soda is better for you. That is a lie (though the people who repeate it mean well and just believe the lie themselves). It is full of absolutely empty calories. A little sugar is not bad for you (IMO) but drinks loaded with sugar and calories are bad for you (yes calories count and too many of them cause overweight). Sugared drinks are not very satisfying as food.

Anything with artificial sweeteners is bad for you. If you want a calorie-free sweetener, try using Stevia. It's not the best tasting, but it's natural and not full of chemicals. I'm guilty of using Splenda in my coffee every day, but I guess I'm willing to accept the risks of it possibly being hazardous to my health to avoid all the calories that sugar has.

If diet drinks have no calories or sugar in them how are they different from water? I don't drink tea or coffee but I love my diet drinks. And how is stuff like crystal light or mio any different that diet sodas?
