I am agreeing with you about the cellphones. All the passengers could not be disabled at the same ( or could they) , so that someone couldn't make a call. Its still a big mystery.

"This is what I don't get 239 people most with cell phones and you mean to tell me no one made a call? no one texted?"

Making a cell phone call from an airplane isn't common, even in the US. That's why phones and computers have "airplane mode". We are usually asked to turn off all cell phones and electronic devices during take off and landing. When we are given the all clear by the crew, we're allowed to use electronic devices in airplane mode.

Some airplanes now allow internet access, for a price. Southwest charges $5.

I'm used to flying coach. First and business class might have internet access on US or European planes. Don't know about planes flying into China because the Chinese government does restrict internet access.

The question is whether or not the first and business class passengers had cell phone or internet access. I would say whatever happened may have happened so quickly, they never had a chance. IF there was a hijacking, it wouldn't take much to turn off communications. We've already seen how someone with a lot of knowledge was able to turn off the transponders.

Still too many what ifs. Too many questions.

It did not "crash" or disintegrate. It was a planned event and will be used for evil purposes such as a weapon of mass destruction. The cabin was probably depressurized and the passengers are dead. It was not a "lone" effort. Some government has complicity.

They could of just wanted the plane , as we all know from that horrific day known as 911 they used planes as bombs who ever did this might just of wanted the plane and with no need for the passengers might of killed them.
I do hope we find out what happened to all these people and the plane for the sake of the families involved so they can get closure.

This is what I don't get 239 people most with cell phones and you mean to tell me no one made a call? no one texted? I mean even during 911 people were using their phones and in some cases that's how a lot of people got closure as they heard their loved ones for the last time.
I mean even if the were to gather all the phones (if hijackers or terrorists) there would still be one or two that would be able to at least send out a text. I'm thinking it must of been a pilot or both that did something and the passengers had no idea they were turning around and thought they were going the right course this just doesn't sound right.
I mean I know a lot might of fallen asleep but still I find it hard to believe that no one used their phone or sent out an email at the very least...... God be with them

"Piracy as in someone stole the plane? What would they do to the 200+ people on board? Murder them, sell them into slavery, or release them?"

Somali pirates ransomed their hostages. If this plane was hijacked and taken to a safe place to land, every single person could be held for ransom. And that demand doesn't have to be in money. Hijackers could use these people to ransom colleagues already in jail in China or Malaysia. China does have plenty of internal problems and most of the people on that plane were Chinese nationals.

If the plane was taken hostage, shouldn't we have heard from the kidnappers by now ?

This whole situation confuses and amazes me at the same time. How the heck could we have the technology to find our cell phones, but not to find a huge plane. I just hope that the passengers are safe, but if not that they went peacefully without any knowledge of what was going to happen.

Hijacked and now the plane is sitting on the ground waiting for a good target to fly into. As to the passengers, They are excess baggage to the scum that would do this and I pray for their souls. They are in dire jeopardy.

No idea. The article presented another theory that one of the pilots committed suicide by plunging the plane into the ocean. Sounds pretty wild.

listen to the news today - they think that someone turned off two communications systems - it is just a switch. a data system was turned off (but it can't be turned off) so it keeps pinging data. Hmmm.

To whom was this directed? "Saying that the transponder should be changed so we can track a plane even if it's hijacked by someone who knows how to turn it off".

I'm trying to follow this conversation, and I can't find the original posting of this. Thanks.

The flight crew has to be able to adjust and turn off the transponder. It's meant to identify the flight and route. Since the same plane flies different routes and flight numbers, they have to change their signal. They can also switch it from their flight sign to special codes that mean "emergency," or "radio is broken," or "hijacking." They can do that and make it look like a casual adjustment so if there's a hijacker in the cockpit, s/he won't know they're doing it.

I've also heard that they switch it off and back on all the time to help air traffic control see them in busy areas. Imagine you're trying to park cars by phone. You see 30 sets of headlights out your window and you have to help one of them avoid the others. It's a lot easier if you can say, "Hey, flash your lights at me." Then it's easy to tell who's who. And once they're on the ground, they switch it off so ATC won't get distracted by parked planes and can concentrate on the ones in the air.

And when you think about it, that's what the transponder is for. Yes, it can also be used to track a lost plane, but its actual purpose is to guide the tens of millions of flights every year that don't get lost. Saying that the transponder should be changed so we can track a plane even if it's hijacked by someone who knows how to turn it off is like saying that all car horns should be made to honk constantly so we can find you if a psychopath buries your car under a ton of concrete. We're probably better off leaving car horns alone and just trying to find ways to stop psychopaths from burying cars in the first place.

It seems to me that the media has been downplaying the fact that two passengers had fake passports...almost making it seem like this is a common occurrence, no big deal and means little. I certainly hope that there are not typically people with faked passports on typical flights. If there are, what is the point of passports in the first place?

I have heard this recent update as well:
"They just did an update on the news - both devices to track were intentionally turned off." I believe it was a hijacking based on what has been released thus far.

If the plane has been hijacked, Malaysia and China may have been forced to keep things quiet. Because, let's say these governments have been contacted by the hijackers and presented with a ransom demand. that's not something you can keep secret for long from the rest of the world. There is too much telecommunications monitoring going on cough spying cough.

If the plane has gone down over the Indian Ocean as a result of a pilot suicide or hijacking/suicide, they may never find any debris for years. They might have to wait for the ocean currents to wash up debris somewhere.

That's what's happening on the west coast now. That's where the debris from the Japanese earthquake has been washing up. You have to wonder if the same thing will happen to this place. Will bits and pieces just wash up for anyone to learn anything ?

As much as I would like to know all the details of what they uncover...I hope that they are keeping info out of the media so that the people responsible don't know the status of the investigation. On the other hand, I am amazed at the lack of communication different agencies have with each other, when they are trying to take credit for cases.

What I don't understand is why the transponders have a switch that can be turned off by the crew. It seems to me, for any commercial flight, they should be automatic, never turned off. They should be constantly sending information of the plane's position.

From a news report I listened to this morning, it seems that one transponder was turned off and then the second one 15 minutes later. That does seem to imply either a high jacking of some kind or possible pilot suicide. the high jacking could be home grown terrorists not part of a wider group. because so far, al quade or any other terrorist group hasn't laid claim.

The experts made a good point. if there was a catastrophic failure, everything would have turned off at the same time. The ocean is a lot bigger than people realize. And as big as a 777 Dreamliner is, it too can be lost in an area that size.

There are just too many unknowns. Of course, if the plane had disappeared in the Caribbean, people would have said the Bermuda Triangle was the cause. How many people remember that ?

Making the black box transmit to a computer would mean having MILLIONS of computers dedicated just to that. At any given moment there are about 5000 commercial flights in the air just over the United States. And how would you get a signal out from over the ocean? The world is really, really big, and most of it is beyond the reach of cell towers or radios. If you tried to do it by satellite, who would pay for the thousands of extra satellites that would be needed? Unless people are willing to pay $10,000 for a ticket from Denver to Chicago, it's not possible. Not to mention that then any terrorist group with a good internet connection could find out exactly where any flight was, so they could shoot it down without even needing a radar. All of this is why black boxes were invented in the first place-- nobody should have access to all data from all flights, and legitimate authorities can't intercept and manage it all.

As for the theory that some foreign government or terrorist group stole the plane... It's not that hard to steal an empty plane if you want a plane. If they wanted to hold the passengers, they'd be asking for ransom by now, and if they just wanted the plane but they needed a pilot, they could have hijacked a cargo plane. If it was a hijacking, it failed and crashed.

Praying for them and their families.

Last night on T.V. they showed how easy it was to turn off the black box. Scary.

I don't know what to think. I can't help but replay something Matt Lauer said the other day. There are so many things on a plane that would float. First of all, isn't it still true that your seat cushion is a floatation device? That plane should have been at around 35,000 feet. How would it be possible that the plane could crash and there not be SOMETHING that would float?

Any thoughts that there might be someone who hijacked it, turned off all communication, and landed it somewhere that that country's government is hiding it? Not sure what kind of planning that would take, but good grief! It's been a week and we have NOTHING.

My heart goes out to the family of the passengers on the missing plane. It is more likely than not in the ocean.

Almost seems like a hijaking to me. Possibly pilot suicide. It seems that the transponder was deliberately turned off... US airlines have rules about locking the cockpit doors from the inside, after 9/11. Doesn't mean other countries have those same rules. Doesn't mean other countries have any kind of rules about random passengers being able to take a little tour of the cockpit either. (I read an article about some women who said they were allowed into the cockpit on a Malaysian Air flight. But that's not a proven fact, to my knowledge.) And even if there were rules.... doesn't mean they're taken as seriously as they should be. Wouldn't take much, to wait for the pilot to say goodbye to the Malaysian tower, then seize control of the plane.

I think the plane went down in the water.... the big question though, is Where? I hope and pray constantly that they'll find it soon. Really disappointed that the satellite photos released by China the other day, turned out to be nothing. I find it fascinating that tomnod has got people all over the world, looking at satellite images just in case some extra eyes could find something.

I have no theory about this missing plane, but I think the most plausible explanation is its on the bottom of the ocean floor somewhere. It seems somewhere there would be debris found already if it crashed. The entire world just about is looking for this plane so at some point the answers will come.

You just have to be ready when your time comes with the way the world is now, so much war, evil, cruelty and negativity~

FENWAYGIRL18 as wonderful as technology is, it isn't always that great and there is always the possibility for it not to work and mishaps with people creating, maintaining and repairing every bit of the plane from the black box to the engine. And as small as our own piece of the world seems individually the world is a very big place for a person or plane to sadly disappear into, even with all the advances in technology.

I agree with the previous poster, the plane is at the bottom of the ocean but I pray they find it for the families.

I think the plane is at the bottom of the ocean somewhere, and it's a big uncharted ocean out there.
My heart goes out to the family and friends waiting for answers.

there are over 12 countries & over 80 aircraft & ships looking for this plane. I believe it is in the sea.My prayers go to all the families, & to all those in dire search of this plane. My sister in law is a stewardess she flies all over the world . I fear for her, because I hate flying, she told me it is safer than driving a car. she told me it gets so much attention when there is a plane crash because of the number of people killed in a plane cash. She said more are killed in cars than planes.I know that but I just do not like flying even though I do.
take care
Judy

I was wondering if they could make that black box signal go directly to a computer in case of a crash or something, there has to be some kind of technology out there... not just the pinging, but send a direct signal to some satelite or computer to say the plane went down...
This is so heartbreaking just as a bystander never mind those poor families... god bless them all..

It makes you realize what a big world it is out there and what a small thing an airplane is. It's really kind of surprising that this doesn't happen more often. Any time a plane crosses an ocean or a sparsely-populated area, it's out of contact with the ground for a significant amount of time. If one had a power outage and crashed or emergency-landed here in the desert where I live, it would be likely to take almost as long to find it. When hikers don't report in, it can take 3 or 4 days to reach them even if we know exactly where they planned to go, and even though they leave footprints and scent trails. Finding a plane in the Indian Ocean is like finding a single car in Alaska. Finding a plane in the search area this thing is in is like find a car somewhere in North America.

One of the problems with making the black box signal stronger is that then you'd have pinging everywhere. They have to be relatively short range so that when you're looking for one you don't hear every plane within 1000 miles. Making it last longer would require bigger, heavier batteries when they're trying to make planes lighter. It would make every flight more expensive and a teensy bit more dangerous, all for a device that is only useful in about one of every billion flights and then only after people have already died.

It's frustrating and it has to be an absolute nightmare for the families, but it's not that strange that it's hard to find. If you read what real pilots and aviation engineers say instead of listening to reporters and talk show hosts, it's not even all that odd that the transponder was off. Yes, it might be that someone turned it off, but if there was a sudden power failure, both it and the radio would go off, and the pilot would try to turn back but might well go off course without instruments, just like this plane did. It's just too early to know anything at all.

So sad....I think one of the pilots went off and killed the other pilot and then turned the plane's direction and ultimately crashed the plane but I think it is on land somewhere. I heard that they are picking up some kind of signals from cell phones but that may just be a rumor. I am praying for all the families.

They just did an update on the news - both devices to track were intentionally turned off. Either hijacking or pilot suicide.

First of all let me say that my heart goes out to the families of all 239 people on that plane, it must be frustrating to not know what happened to your loved ones and I really hope they get some kind of news soon.
I'm quite shocked with all this technology that they can't find this plane still, I know radar gets lost over the ocean, I know not all countries have the same technology, but that black box should have a better way of finding it other then looking in the ocean for it and listening for a ping that only will last for 30 days. What about the stolen passports, why didn't they realize they were stolen?
I mean I'd think that there would be better technology or GPS on that black box so it's easily found in the event of a tragedy.
I mean this is so mysterious it makes me wonder was it hijacked and is it sitting in a foreign country in a hanger and are those poor people hostages somewhere? waiting for the right moment to say they've been hijacked?
OR
Is this a twilight moment that somehow this plane flew into some freaky kind of blackhole never to be found again...I mean with all this strange weather it just makes you think that , that could be a possibility...
What are your thoughts?

Starting to like the new me!
Waiting for my garden to come to life!
