I dropped off my 40 items today. Thank you again, Ziggy for sharing that idea. It felt good to do a little something positive and I plan to do it next year again.

I love Ziggy's idea and I'm starting it a few days late!

I live alone and have 2 freezers and a cupboard full of food simply because I buy it when it's on offer. So I've set myself a challenge for lent - to spend no more than Ł1 a day on food all through lent but to live mainly off what I already have. Ł1 a day should be just about enough for fruit, veg, milk and bread.

However, I really see Lent as a time for drawing closer to God rather than giving up things, so I'm seeking to spend more time with Him as well. At Church we have a prayer challenge for Lent 'Each one pray for one.' We all put our names into a box and then drew out a name of someone to pray for every day throughout Lent.

It is a good time to develop one healthy habit that will help me for the rest of my life. Lent can actually be a very positive experience. I once gave up smoking for Lent and it is the best thing I ever did for myself. I never started again.

Lent can be observed is so many ways. I like to focus on "turning towards" something that is good. So I may fast from some on-line time to turn towards more time for spiritual reading, etc.

I have enjoyed reading these responses and this is a conversation that I enjoy having w/ people in all walks of life. It is interesting to see how Catholics/ Episcopalians and people from other denominations view and choose to or not observe the season of Lent.

As I continue to strengthen my relationship with God, I want to read the Bible more. I have also struggled with soft drinks, for which I've done well in drinking less, however, during Lent, I will give up soda.

I grew up Catholic but don't do Lent either. I've seen a lot of friends and family give up things like chocolate, alcohol etc up for Lent but the binging before and after is kind of yucky to watch. I'm not saying don't do it but I like the positive ideas better. I've given up sodas and sugar but I gave them up on my own, on no particular days at all and don't intend to go back to them.

I am not Catholic, but have decided to give up 'spending too much time on Facebook'. I check it way too often. I'm going to limit myself to once a day.

I am also going to spend more time reading the Bible.

I don't attend church in my area - there are no churches in my tiny town that feel right to me - but when I'm home with my family I attend. I'm participating in Lent nonetheless and decided to give up non-salad lunches - I've been packing too much heavy food or opting for the cafeteria.

I should share that I am not Catholic, but Southern Baptist. The question was posed "Why only do something healthy for 40 days?" My response to that is I have made drastic lifestyle changes since Sept and have allowed myself "cheat" meals on occasion since completing my 30 day clean eating challenge in the middle of Nov. I LOVE steak and while I definitely do not eat it like I did prior to the challenge, I believe that not eating steak or any sweets during Lent is not a bad thing. I don't look at Lent as a time of deprivation, but a time of restraint and a time to focus on my relationship w/ Christ.

I grew up catholic but don't do Lent! I will continue on with my kindness and positivity though. That's a nicer idea than giving up something. I'm already pretty much vegan, don't drink or smoke, rarely have sweets and treats so I don't need to give up anything really~

I do however like the idea of donating to a food pantry. I will contact the lady in charge of my church pantry and see what they need.

Made it to my maintenance weight of 125 pounds.

Even though I have reached goal. I still don't know everything about weight loss.

I don't see the need to punish myself any further, for 40 days, and magic will happen, but I do understand why it was done years ago. Donating food to others is always a good thing, however.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

The people with whom I live and I decided last night that we would do one additional meatless meal each week besides Friday. Not that it is such a sacrifice but it will bring out the creative side of those who cook. It is so much easier to start with meat and build around it. The nice side effects will be fewer calories and maybe savings on our food budget.

I consider myself something of a retired Christian. However, in past years, I have tried to observe Lent.

Some members ask why not engage in the behavior for life instead of just Lent ? I would say for the same reasons people find it difficult to lose weight and keep it off. They know what to do, why can't they stick with it ? We all talk about taking baby steps, right ? Well, for some people Lent could be that baby step towards a healthier lifestyle.

I've found that I keep my Lenten "resolutions" better than any New Year's Resolution. Making a sacrifice during Lent is kinda like making a promise to God. Most people want to KEEP those promises.

And I know that we should be making a meaningful sacrifice. However, many people have found Lent to be a time to kick some less than healthy habits. I know people who tried to quit smoking, quit swearing, lose weight, give up red meat, give up chocolate or sweets, etc...

I've given up Diet Coke. I've given up red meat. I've given up chocolate. All of it in every single form. Mind you, the minute Easter comes around, I'm into the Cadbury eggs. LOL !!

The point ? Lent is a time for some people use to make a meaninful change in their lives.

What will I be doing ? I'm thinking about going the 40 days without chocolate again. Last year, I didn't do Lent because I figured losing my job was enough of a sacrifice.

Then I thought, chocolate is about the only vice I have left. I don't really drink. I don't smoke. I don't drink soda. I'm pretty healthy. Chocolate is my one vice and everyone should have at least one vice ? right ?

I am just curious. What if anything are you giving up for Lent or is there something you are planning on doing through out the season of Lent?

For me personally, I am going back to a clean eating challenge and also plan on walking/ running 10-15 miles a week.
