In some cases your company insurance (or whatever insurance you carry) will give you discounts if you're enrolled in their programs. Some insurance providers would like to charge you full (or greater!) freight if you aren't in one.
I think the concept is a good one. But, as with so many things, implementation and accountability are the problems. I don't see it being any problem to join one, but as an individual, I think your wellness is probably best directed by you and your healthcare provider - not an insurance company.

In theory wellness programs are a great idea. However, I've learned the hard way that depending on where it's located and who is running it, it might be more harmful than good. It's very important to know the education and credentials of those who are advising you in any way. Unless they have the educational background and degrees or professional certificates, they may give you really bad advise. And don't just check out the initials after their name, research where those initials came from because different programs have very different requirements. It's happened to me, so now I'm leery of the programs. However, when run correctly, the programs can be a great asset to something attempting to start off on a healthier lifestyle. They can provide nutrition advise, activity advise, sometimes medical advise, and sometimes connect you with other like minded individuals to help motivate you.

My husband's work has a wellness program that I always participate in. We have to read articles and answer questions, keep an exercise log for 30 days, and have a physical. There's one more thing, but I can't remember what. Anyway, it certainly keeps you accountable and there are incentives.
