I have tried every diet on this planet and lost weight only to gain it back when I got off the diet. So...this time I am making a life style change and sticking to it.

For me, the difference between the concepts of "diet" and "lifestyle change" is still just semantic. I consider them the same thing.

I have lost over 100 pounds (40 with SP) and the key for me is a lifestyle change...no diet, no on and off, etc but a effort to make good choices, be aware of foods, use moderation, etc.
It works!

To me this is a life style change. If I change habits now - such as carrots for my snack instead of cake, I will soon learn that I would rather have the carrots....

It took more than a day to put it on. It will take more than a day to take it off.

"Weight loss seems easy but if it was easy, then everyone would be successful. Through a decade of diets, protein shakes, weight-loss on line support groups, etc. I find myself as lost as Hansel and Gretel. Diet books line my shelves, on coffee table, by my bed and in magazine storage basket. Realizing that there are so many different and sometimes, opposing ideas about weight loss and the best choices for long term and sustainability. It must be a true life style change, a change we can live with.

May present conflict is one of challenging, thought provoking and mind bending. When I read the words DIET (Depressing, Impossible, Exhausting, Tired) these words also enter my mind. All of which has it's place in most dieters minds. To change how we perceive this one word, we must focus on Positive results and added health benefits. Focusing on a Life style Change we can LIVE with.

First we must wade through hoards of dieting/eating plans to locate the ONE. The ONE plan best for you and you alone. Meaning that hundreds others could be on the very same plan, rating it a zero with little or no results with no long term sustainability. But for you, it WORKS! You know it the ONE that has changed the way you view food in general. That ONE that just clicks and you no longer associate the change in you with the word DIET, but a "Life Style Change". The one thing you can live with, finally. NOTHING feels as good as SUCCESS and knowing you and you a lone made this change in you.

I made a life style change two weeks ago and have lost 10 pounds and discovered it wasn't the best choice for a long term change. I was Depressed, Exhausted, tired and angry. I was not getting what MY body needed. I through experience have now become more aware of what my body needs to succeed and be healthy. I am working on finding the ONE. But I am positive that I can keep moving in the right direction and forget about the word diet and just give my body what it needs and the rest will follow.

A diet is something that you do until you lose weight and it includes cutting certain foods out forever. A life style change means you will continue on that healthy path for life learning to eat smaller portions and still being able to eat the things you love, just not as often or not as much.

It's all about a life style change for me. I want to lose it, get healthy and stay that way.

Keep your feet firmly planted in the clouds!!

As God is my witness, I will never be fat again!!! (quote stolen from STACYLUE)

Just semantics. For me, "lifestyle change" means the same thing as "dieting." In managing my weight is it all about food and exercise and a zillion other things related to my maintenance "diet" and healthy way of life.

It's a life style change for me. If this was just a diet, when I reached goal, would go back to old ways and gain the weight back. I'm looking for low fat recipes that taste good and fill me up. If I can find this, I can stick to my new ways, working on it. emoticon

"how do you create that life style change?"

One step at a time!!!!

You can probably think of a few "life style habits" that you have right now, that are contributing to weight gain or hindering weight loss or maintenance. Some of these habits you probably hold dear and true (the "i refuse to give up [x]!! if losing weight means giving it up, i'd rather stay heavy!" sort of things that feel really important to you). Don't mess with those things.... not just yet, anyways....

You probably can think of a few life style habits that you have, that you are NOT so attached to - things that have developed into "habits" but if you think about them, you can say "well, that, i could live without....." START WITH THESE!

For example. I always ate a lot of sandwich-loaf bread, because sandwiches = familiar, easy, cheap, good enough... but do I LOVE white loaf? Nope, I really don't. I got in the habit of using it because it's cheap, convenient, easy, handy - you gotta hold your sandwich fillings in something, right? Well.......... maybe not. Maybe I could dollop my tuna salad atop a heap of lettuce and tomato. Maybe I could have soup for lunch, or some dinner leftovers, instead of a cold boring sandwich. Maybe I could come up with LOTS of ideas for meals that didn't require white loaf. So... I did that. No more crappy bread. Now, if I eat bread, I eat GOOD bread, the kind that stands alone and is delicious without butter, mayo, or filling. Really good chunk of chewy artisan bread with my stew. Mmm! Giving up white loaf turned out to be an EASY habit to change... and a habit I won't return to! And... it knocked my lunch-calories back by at least 100, maybe 200 calories... a calorie-reduction I do not even notice.

What do you eat out of habit, that you don't much care about? Get rid of that, first.

Once you succeed with ONE change, you'll develop the confidence you need to try the next change. Build on your successes. Soon you'll feel strong enough to reconsider those Non Negotiable things you thought you couldn't live without - and will start coming up with compromises (i.e. having them but only once a month, having them but only in certain portion sizes, or maybe doing without/substituting something else for a period of time).

Before you know it, a year's gone by and you wonder why that darned wonderbread ever felt so "necessary and important." You'll look back and reflect on "what you ate then" and realize - your lifestyle did change, maybe a lot! One little step at a time.

Goal 1 - break 200 (46 pounds lost)**DONE**
Goal 2 - leave obesity behind (BMI 29.9, at 185#) **DONE**
Goal 3 - BMI = Normal (154# or less)

I'm knew here, but for me it has to be a life style change.. I've dieted all my life and as soon as I stopped the diet I'd gain it all back and more. If I even think the word diet , I start starving to death ! Over the last 18 months I've made several life style changes. The only meat I eat is fish. No white bread. Every thing I buy is either low fat or fat free. These are small steps but permanent steps. Just recently changed from splenda to truvia. Don't like it as well but it's healthier and I'm slowly getting used to it. Now I'm working on drinking water. Hate it ,but slowly getting used to it hopefully. For me it has to be small steps to become a life style change. By the way I lost about 35 lbs with my new changes. A small amount for me (I'm 298 now ) but better than gaining.

A "diet", meaning to most people a *weight-loss* diet, is a "temporary fix". It's adopted in order to reach a goal, whereupon it's eventually abandoned to return to previous eating habits. This is why the majority of diets eventually fail - even the surgical weight-loss ones.

A lifestyle change is one in which you abandon your previously unhealthy diet and focus eating habits on health. This is the way you make permanent health improvements, of which weight loss is only one aspect.

If you plan to eat differently only for a short time span and then revert... don't torture yourself to start with.

Some people, I call them "normal people" (note, only in a lighthearted fun way, not to say that I am 'abnormal') can diet. They just want to lose a few extra pounds. They might even be completely aware it's potentially temporary. Wanting to look good for a wedding. Shedding 'holiday weight'. They might bounce between a low and high, and they've been doing that for some time. No lifestyle change required. That is their lifestyle.

For me, lifestyle change was required. Dieting may have played a role, but the goal was lifestyle change. I'm still on the journey. I always will be. If I get off the journey of constantly changing lifestyle for the better, I'll go right back to where I was.

ok, the one thing that I have come to realize is it has to be a change that you can live with. So you have to change the way you look at food, exercise, etc. and find away to make it a part of your daily life. If you can not stick with it, its just a diet. I am doing better but NO way there yet.

OK .... until I came to SparkPeople I had no notion of "life style" beyond the TV program (Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous). My whole adult life was about "dieting" because the only reason I ever considered losing weight was to look good & get/keep/renew the interest of whoever I was dating at the time.

Thank heavens the changes I'm making are to and for my LIFE!

Diets are not as permanent as a life style change. Best to be a more selective eater consistently making healthier choices as apposed to going on a binge eating or drinking too much.

I dieted myself to 250#s.

I "lifestyled" myself to 145#s.

A diet was about temporary deprivation.

Lifestyle was about learning to eat to be healthy and still being able to enjoy what I like.

Diet was brutal, nasty gym workouts that I hated.

Life style is about workout routines that I can live with and accomplish at home.

I had to wrap my head around the "THIS IS FOREVER" concept before I could be successful.

It has to be a lifestyle change, if i want the weight loss to be permanent. And honestly, if I don't go into this with the optimistic plan for "permanent" weight loss - why bother? I am not doing all this hard work with the expectation of returning to my previous lifestyle, inevitably regaining.. gah!!! Been there done that not doing it anymore.

It is for this reason that I have always been very strongly of the mind that I better find foods that fit a healthier lifestyle THAT I ENJOY.

For me it's a llifestyle change, because it's something I want for the rest of my life, day in a and day out.

Now, in the future I might want to drop 10 pounds for a wedding or vacation or something, and for that I will "diet".

Both.

Yes, I have made a long term lifestyle change. But that new lifestyle includes regular exercise -- whether I WANT to do it or not -- and some dieting as well. If I am going to be successful for the rest of my life, I need to deal with the fact that there will be fluctuations along the way. Sometimes, I will be able to do and eat what I want to ... but at other times I will have to exhibit self control/discipline to make sacrifices to achieve my goals.

Live style change - I have a huge sweet tooth and every Sunday have a big family dinner with desert. I have learned a roast dinner is just as enjoyable with no gravy and baked instead of mashed potatoes. Also, there are lots of very good deserts out there that look completely awesome and mouth watering under 200 calories. I've learned to enjoy big family dinners (stuffed when you leave the table) for under 500 calories, including desert!

And besides, my hubby always said... it's not the food I eat that's my problem - it's the exercise I need to add to my day to make me healthy. :)

For me it was a lifestyle change, that had the added bonus of losing weight.

I changed from eating 80% or more meals in restaurants to eating 95% of meals cooked at home (which, incidentally, required that I learn to cook).

I changed from being incredibly "efficient" (get the most accomplished with the least amount of movement) to deliberately taking extra steps to get things done. I am no longer able to sit still, and have become one of those folks who used to annoy me by continuously fidgeting.

I changed from eating the number of calories each day that was required to maintain my higher weight to eating the number of calories each day required to maintain my "goal" weight. To me, there wasn't any point in dropping below what would be my final maintenance range in order to get there faster --- I chose to learn to eat at the level that I would need to keep forever.

All of the changes that I made were ones that I enjoyed making, and which ended up with me being happier. This *is* my lifestyle, and I have no intention of ever changing back to ways that didn't make me as happy.

Start weight: 240 lbs
Goal weight: 155 lbs (reached March 7, 2014)

For me, it's a diet. But it is teaching me the skills to make it a lifetime change. When I reach my goal weight I will have to use these skills that I've learned for the rest of my life.

But right now I am calorie restricting. When I am maintaining I will be eating what my body needs to not gain or lose. And I plan on continuing to exercise for as long as I can, thankfully I have learned to really love it.

So yeah, it's a diet that is teaching me how to change myself into a healthier, fitter me :)

It can be both. Ultimately people successful at losing weight make a lifestyle change, but at the beginning they need to have a road map as to where to start. That is where diet definitions are handy. Nearly all commercial diets will lead you to weight loss if you follow them. From there it is up to each of to pay attention and learn what works best you us. You may need to try multiple diets before you find your best fit to make the ultimate lifestyle change. I truly believe it is folly to apply a single way of eating and believe it will work the same for everyone.

For me it is a lifestyle change - but lifestyle includes enjoyment and holidays. Holidays tend to mean extra food - and probably extra exercise but a healthy lifestyle can accommodate the celebrations of life. It's when we celebrate with food all the time that the problems come!!

Life style change. If I were just dieting I would be stressed and obsessive; instead I am relaxed, hopeful, and grounded. Like it a lot better!

Diets are something you go "on" or "off." It is a lifestyle change. I agree it's a matter of semantics.

To me, it is more than semantics. A lot of people talk the talk but really they only plan to "go on a diet" and are often not that serious about a lifestyle change (though they tell themselves otherwise).

I am saying this partly in hopes there might be one or two out there who will think more deeply about this because I truly believe the only way to take off excess weight and keep it off is a lifestyle change (unless you have ten or less pounds to lose that gradually crept up on you over several years).

Something that comes to mind with this topic is typical Weight Watchers Meetings. For example, one time I went to one right after Thanksgiving. The members would casually chat at times before and during the meeting, telling about their week. I recall a member lamenting that she gained, but she told of having this piece of pie.....and someone asked, "Was it worth it?" And she said emphatically, "YES!" And many knowingly laughed.

I am not trying to say anything bad about the woman who had the piece of pie (we've all been there). The point I am trying to make is that we need to get to the idea in our own heads that the piece of pie is NOT worth it, and it is really isn't even a laughing matter.

One more thing I want to say is that if you want to eat pie and it is counted in your lifestyle change plan, then it is fine. But if you eat it when it was not part of your plan just because you want to celebrate (with rich, unhealthy food) and it tastes good, well that is the type of thing we need to change in our heads, permanently.

when someone thinks ...they are going on a diet to lose weight...they usually have the concept that the change is temporary and that the weight will remain gone without having to cramp their 'style'. When someone tries to change their life style, they are also trying to change their paradigm and the way they manage their choices. That's like the difference between redecorating a room (diet) and renovating your house (life style change).

Ok, Back on track with Dash Diet today. I read an interesting article on SP about life style change. It was so eye opening for me, it was not anything I didn't know. I just never really gave it a lot of thought. We all say we are going to do a life style change when in fact we are thinking DIETING. Life Style Change is more than a Diet, Its about really changing how you think about everything from eating, exercise, accountability, etc. It stated very clearly “ transition from “dieting” to a “lifestyle change.” The key to making a shift to a new lifestyle is developing the skills and confidence to stand on your own two feet..
The key to changing a lifestyle is consistency.
The key to consistency is motivation.
The key to motivation is to know where to look. emoticon
