Facials, like massages and lots of other things that people like to do, are in my opinion not necessary at all, but if they make life more pleasant, why not enjoy them.

They aren't necessary and sometimes they can even cause breakouts, but they are relaxing and it is more of a treat. As many of said you can get the same great effects at home.

My 101 year old mother never had a facial, uses Noxema, as she has for decades, still looks good, and she would tell you facials are a waste of money, especially if you really can't afford one, like a lot of other things in life. You will still live ok.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I go maybe 3 times a year to a salon or spa to have a professional one, otherwise I give myself one at home every month or so. If you live in a polluted city, or wear a lot of make-up, I don't think that just regular soap and water is enough to get all of the gunk (technical term) out of your pores. One thing that has really made a noticeable improvement in my skin is my Clarisonic brush. They are expensive, but they really do a good job at getting rid of flaky skin and blackheads.

If you have formed the habit of checking on every new diet that comes along, you will find that, mercifully, they all blur together, leaving you with only one definite piece of information: french-fried potatoes are out. ~~Jean Kerr

I am your resident Esthetic's teacher and I believe that they serve a wonderful purpose in our lives, although not completely necessary. If you want to pamper, treat, or even prevent, seeing your local esthetician can do wonders for your skin. The power of touch can do marvelous things to ones emotional state.
I get as much out of giving a facial as my clients do. I make people's skin healthier, I spend time caring, touching and relaxing with each facial that I give. My goal is to make each client feel 1 hour and 15 minutes of being the most important person in the world.
I try to instill this magic in each student that comes through my class.

It depends on if your current regimen is working. I love facials and used to get them every 6 weeks to keep my acne at bay. I went in to a dermatologist because I couldn't afford facials and she said they are fine. I was prescribed medication to deal with my acne and now I don't have it. I use cleanser and moisturizer once per day with my medications a couple days a week. I'll do a mask every couple weeks if I notice my face getting a little too flaky but thats it.

For me, I get one once a month at the medical grade. I have dry, problem skin with a lot of issues from the past and terrible genetics (acne, lines on my forehead since I was 19, etc). I can afford it and that, along with better products (not necessarily expensive) have improved my skin.

However, are they necessary? No. They provide some superficial, and in the grand scheme, minor improvements in my skin. If my budget didn't allow for them, I wouldn't get them.

For Christmas one year, I received a gift certificate to get a facial and a massage. It was wonderful. Do I think it helped my skin ? I'd say that the exfoliation was effective, but is a professional facial necessary to have good skin ? it's nice, but not really necessary. There are plenty of good products to help a person maintain a healthy complexion.

Would I like to have a professional done on a regular basis ? Sure, but over time, it would be expensive.

Personally, I'd like to know what products George Hamilton uses. Considering how much time he spends in the sun working on that tan, his skin should be like leather. However, whenever I saw an interview with him, he seemed to have wonderful skin. So, I wonder what he uses to keep that youthful glow.

I don't think necessary, but a nice way to get pampered, Would make a nice reward for losing to have one done at a spa! At home I make my own using table sugar, vanilla, and a small amount of olive oil. The sugar is a good exfoilant and disolves in water, the oil moisturizes, and the vanilla just smells nice!

They are not necessary at all.

A good healthy diet, and a lot of hydration from water helps immensely.

You most likely can make the same stuff at home with the same, if not better, results. Someone posted a link - check it out.

I use a gentle cleanser, followed by a toner made from apple cider vinegar and water tasty-yummies.com/2013/05/22/how-to-make-y
our-own-apple-cider-vinegar-facial-ton
er/
, then followed with a good moisturizer (SPF if daytime).

I exfoliate once or twice a week, followed by a good moisturizer.

If you want to splurge on yourself - save up and go once every few months just for the experience.

I don't think they are necessary but, like so many others have stated, they are a treat. I just make sure that I cleanse my face every night and put a fantastic night cream on to replenish the dryness. It feels wonderful. In the morning, I using a cleansing foam, wash that off, and put on a great moisturizer with sunscreen. My face hasn't felt so wonderful; smooth and feels great.

Facials are not necessary. Back in our grandmother's days I don't think they had facials and both of my grandmothers had beautiful skin. As others have said, if you have problem skin get the correct products. Otherwise, a little soap, tempid water and a light moisturizer with sunscreen is all you need. I also find that going without makeup for a day or 2 helps my skin.

I have had 2 facials in my life. The first one felt very nice and was enjoyable. The second one was just a mess.

You know what would be really good for your skin? Not eating fast food.

I second the recommendation of sunscreen--I'm almost 40 and don't have wrinkles. I use olive oil to cleanse my skin and exfoliate with a homemade salt scrub.

No, I don't think facials are necessary. You can take care of your facial skin needs at home unless it's something that needs to be seen by a doctor, of course. If your current products are not giving you the results that you want, they might not be the right products for you.

If you are looking for some good (in my opinion), basic, advice about facial skin care, selecting the proper products for your skin type, selecting and using sunscreen properly, and even maybe correcting minor complexion problems at home, then I'd recommend DermTV (you can just Google DermTV, oh and I'm in no way affiliated with the site). They have some pretty good videos that were made by a board certified dermatologist.

Overall, I think that most people would probably benefit from wearing sunscreen (I've finally found one that I can stand wearing--EltaMD is the brand). I have also recently discovered the wonders of products containing glycolic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells on a routine basis. Even if you think you don't have dead skin cells hanging out (e.g. you don't see flakes), they're probably there, potentially causing dullness, unevenness, contributing to acne, etc.

Some of these products are quite pricey and I, personally, wouldn't spend a bunch of money for something because it had a certain name. But, there are some pretty reasonable options to be found on places like Amazon, especially if you just use the small amount that you really need.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I don't think it's necessary... I don't like strangers touching me so I prefer to do all that kind of stuff myself. I've found that homemade facial masks and scrubs usually are waaaay better than all those expensive products.

Not necessary. As someone who has had terribly dry skin for the first 34 years of my life I can tell you what has helped me.

As far as skin treatments. I wash with warm water and then I moisturize. That's it.

My skin improved when I cut out wheat/gluten but it wasn't until I cut out casein and lactose that the white dry flakes and the sand-papery bumps have all but gone. I eat a ton more vegetables particularly green vegetables than I used to as well which I'm sure helps as well.

If I eat dairy milk, yogurt or cheese the next morning I wake up with flaky white dry patches on my face and other places. Which stay for a day or two and then go away. I have also noticed an increase in acne, at 36 :( does it ever stop, when I eat dairy.

As a side note butter and heavy cream seem to not have the same effect as they are very low in casein and lactose.

So that is what has helped me, it may or may not help you.

I have very basic skincare, I just cleanse, tone and moisturize. Occasionally I'll just put on a sheet mask. I love sheet masks because they are so convenient!

But do you think an occasional facial in necessary for a better complexion? So far I haven't had a facial in years. But do you think it's better to have one sometimes?

If I ever get a facial, I'd have to save up for one. And I can't have one like every month either, too costly!
