I do suffer every day with chronic pain. I take my pain medication every day. It takes the edge off the pain. If I don't take my medication I will not be able to sleep and that just increases the level of pain.

I also exercise 5-6 days a week. I ride my bicycle to help manage the level of pain I endure. It's a great low-impact alternative. Some days it takes all I have to get on my bike but I am overjoyed when I return from a ride! My pain levels are noticeably lower.

I have made a decision to acknowledge the pain but do the activity anyway.

Do not look where you fell, but where you slipped.

There is a line in Apocalypse Now where the colonel says "Death is either your friend or your enemy. I have chosen to make it my friend." I stole that line and inserted pain where he says death so when I am working out I say, "Pain is either your friend or your enemy. I have chosen to make it my friend." But I should say there is good pain (like the pain in a muscle you are trying to fatigue or that nice burn in your lungs when you are doing cardio) and there is bad pain (like your lower back hurts or your knee is telling you to back off). Still, my point is that you should embrace some good pain because it means your body is working and you are making progress towards your goal.

have you seen the pools with a treadmill in the bottom? Man, I'd LOVE to have one of those! They also can produce a strong current for you to swim against. I see the ads on TV every once in a while.

ETA - the brand name I've seen is Endless Pools - $20,000 and up emoticon

maybe I should start buying a weekly lottery ticket

yeah, I realized even though I'm ready to make all these changes in my life, the body disagrees (at least for now). I've toned it down some but refuse to give in to the pain. Thanks Ziggy

Just take it slow and easy... when I feel pain I stop...maybe you could just do 10 mins at a time through out the day. That seems to help me when my arthritis starts acting up.

Just saw Dr. Need to do what I can do. I did water aerobics for 3 years and that was the best exercise for me but my work schedule now is 6AM to 6Pm so I miss the classes that are at 530am and 530pm. I starting slow with wii Step exercises but really aggravated my arthritis. I plan to go to the pool at least one day on the weekend just for the water therapy. Thanks for your concern. I appreciate it.

If you have a doctor, I would go see him or her prior to doing anything else.. Just be on the safe side, get everything checked.

My pain is from 3 bad discs in my back and arthritis in my knees and back. I have backed off a little but continue to try and do some sort of exercise daily. I really don't want to take pain meds so I will work the best I can.

i try to make the distinction between pain and soreness. soreness is something it's fine to work through. actual pain is something you should stop and/or consult your doctor on because it's your body telling you something is wrong. it's kind of like the difference between stubbing your toe and impaling your food on a 2" nail. it's fine to work through a stubbed toe, but the nail you need an appointment for. if you're calling soreness pain to be worked through, that's fine. but if your pain is a little stronger you should get it checked out to make sure that you aren't doing more damage by pushing past it.

-google first. ask questions later.

I have been swimming three times a week and I have become too used to it. I needed to do something different so I started walking.

I have chronic pain and I had a rough night after walking yesterday. I walked again today but I will take tomorrow off. I know sometimes you need to take a day here or there to rest your muscles. I know walking isn't that strenuous but it is about all I can do. I am disabled and I have some problems with my back and my knees.

Epsom salts - your new best friend!

I have some joint issues (mostly with my left shoulder). I have to modify some of the exercises when I take group fitness. One class I decided to just push myself and not do the modified moves.
I cried myself to sleep that night. It felt like I had broken glass in my shoulder blade.
The 2 classes since then I've gone back to my modified moves. I have sore muscles (and I'm fine with that) but no excruciating pain that no amount of pain reliever will ease.

push yourself, by all means! BUT - it's also very important to know your limitations

I think everyone needs to analyze whether the pain they feel is just muscle aches from muscles not used in a while or pain from something that indicates a problem.
I would rather build up to a certain level of endurance, than need to recover from injuring myself.

After hurting all weekend since I started exercising after a few years, even though I started slow, I decided to push past the pain. I took a hot shower to loosen up the aches and pains and did 30 minutes of WII step this morning. Took a few ibuprofen after. Hurt my arm patting myself on the back ha ha. May have to leave the more strenuous ones for awhile. Start slow but keep going is my motto for today.
