It takes 3 days after coming in contact with a germ [if there was one] for you to get symptoms. Did you see her touch your food? I think handling money that is passed around carries more germs. I always wash after touching money. I also hand sanitize shopping carts. Don't stress. You'll probably be fine.

Think about all the handrails, bathroom door handles, buses, planes, and shopping carts you've touched in the last year. Don't you think sick people touched those items before you? And you are still alive.

Yes overreacting but understandable. Just keep taking the Vit. C and washing your hands. Zinc is good as well.

Ok, Shorty, how are you feeling?

BTW, Zinc has been shown to reduce/prevent colds if you can take it when you start to feel like you might be coming down with something. I finally got my daughter to try it this last time when she started feeling cold sxs and everyone she worked with was sick. She had runny nose for a couple of days and a dry cough for a few days where as everyone she works with was sick for a couple of weeks.

Only 61% of all workers in the US have any access to sick leave. People in a low-wage job like convenience stores and the food service industry are the *least* likely to have it. That woman struggling to work through her cold would not get paid if she didn't work, which means she wouldn't be able to pay her bills. Four days without pay would take out at least 18% of her income for the month, and most people working in that type of position can't survive a pay cut like that even for one month. On top of that, a lot of workplaces will instantly fire a worker who misses a day for anything less than hospitalization. You stay home because you think you have the flu, and your boss will tell you not to bother coming back.

It's a public health issue, definitely. The people who have the most exposure to germs, and the ones who handle our food, HAVE to work when they're sick. That worries me enough that I don't go to restaurants where I know the workers don't have insurance or sick leave, and when I have a choice, I shop at the grocery store that I know gives sick benefits.

But in your case, biology is in your favor. Colds and flu are most contagious before the sufferer even knows she's sick. When you feel a little funny but you're not sure if you're getting sick or if maybe there's just an elevated pollen count or something, *that's* when you're spreading germs around. People who are obviously sick have usually already actually killed most of the virus, so you're less likely to get it from them.

GETSHORTY,

I'm sure you'll be fine, but if you're not. It is doubtful the cashier passed their germs along to you. For all you know, some other customer with a cold could have spread all their germs all over the store. There are lots of different places you could have caught something, BUT, try not to worry. The stress of worrying that you caught something is making you sick.

And I agree with others. An employee might not have the option of being able to stay home when they are sick. I am currently working a contract job. If I don't go to work, I don't get paid. These days, being able to stay home from work when you're sick has become something of a luxury.

I wouldn't worry too much... There are dozens of people you encounter every day that have germs!

If youre generally healthy, perhaps youre overreacting a little. If youre dealing with a compromised immune system, you aren't over reacting at all. It's something that healthy people don't really think about and find it difficult to relate to.

Yes, I wouldn't worry about it. She was indeed most likely contagious several days ago and she touched the package, not the food.

And staying home isn't always an option. Many employers, like mine, basically count it against you if you call in sick. It causes a day of unplanned PTO. If you get enough of them, you can get fired.

I think she should not tell people she just handed food to that she is sick. I would of lost my appetite a little for the popcorn. Tell yourself that you have a strong immune system and her germs will not make you sick. If you do get sick try the spark recipe for chicken soup!

you would not be feeling sick this quickly. sounds like its more from lack of sleep. and fyi she made not have been able to take off work. i worked for the largest communications company in the world and fever, throwing up-didn't matter, if you were scheduled to work you worked. she may not have had that option to go home either. hope you are feeling better soon

Uh Shorty, you might want to duck, there are giant cold bugs hanging around your head...with huge chisels to give you a headache and super sized buckets of slime to give you congestion...

Sorry, couldn't resist! It takes about 72 hours from infection to symptoms. So your HA is likely from your lack of sleep. She was most contagious 5 days ago and if she is on the tail end of a cold she was probably tired and wanting to go home to rest.

I'm guessing that she came to work because she either is feeling better or if feeling ill doesn't have any sick time and needs the money

Earlier this afternoon, I stopped to buy a bag of popcorn for a snack. As I left the register, I told the cashier to have a nice day and stay warm (it was cold and rainy here), to which she thanked me but added that she couldn't wait to get home because she'd been really sick for the past 4 days--with a cold, cough, headache, sore throat--certainly I was appalled that she would still come into work!

Well, perhaps against my better judgement, I ate the popcorn anyway, even though the thought flashed to mind that maybe it was all germy now. (I did grab an anti-bacterial wipe by the exit and wiped off my hands and the package.) Now, I don't feel sick, but I do have a bit of a throb around my eyes, which could well be because I didn't sleep last night. Anyway, does this sound like just a head-game? Am I overreacting? I mean, had she not said anything, I'm sure I wouldn't think a thing of it and be so nervous!
