I've had two abdominal surgeries in the last couple of years. Both times I was told that I could get back in the pool at 4 weeks for VERY gentle exercise (stretching, a couple of laps, NOT swimming a full mile) and that I couldn't resume intense exercise for at least 6 weeks. I am always chomping at the bit to get back to the gym and have a very hard time waiting that long. Slow walking is usually OK/encouraged even before you leave the hospital.
Didn't you ask your doctor about this before surgery? Your discharge instructions might mention it as well. Certainly ask you doctor for a specific recommendation before doing anything beyond a casual stroll.
