Lighting is really important: it's makes a lot of difference, especially if your not that young anymore either. In general though, photos and the mirror are distorted images: they are backwards to what others see, right?

The person I see in the mirror never looks like the person in photographs and probably doesn't look like how other people see me. :P It's probably got to do with perspective, e.g. eye/lens placement... and of course something/someone in motion will look different from a picture.

I do regret that I have very few pictures of me when I was heavier. Some people actually find it hard to believe I was that big, since I don't have pictures. Even my husband has never seen any "fat" pictures of me.

I didn't like having pictures of me looking fat, however I did not have a perception that the real me looked better than the pictures, as so many here seem to be saying you have a good self image but the pictures don't match it. My self-image has always pretty much matched what the pictures captured, whether good or bad. Sorry, but I do not believe the camera adds 10 lbs though certainly, some pictures catch you in a bad or unflattering pose.

I don't even know if it is a self esteem thing. Its not that I look terrible or anything, its just that I don't look the way I think I look. On the other hand, it can't be a bad thing to *feel* attractive, even if photos don't necessarily match. Self worth shouldn't come from photos, its just a strange dichotomy between images and feelings, you know?

When I take pictures now I like the majority of them, but still delete the ones I don't. I always find flaws but some are more acceptable then others. Really dont like looking at my heavy or fat pictures, cant believe that I let myself look like that.

I guess I don't see the difference between the mirror and photographs. They all generally capture what you look like. I will admit I think I look pretty good for being 54 years old, whether in pictures or the reflection I see in the mirror. I hope this does not sound like bragging. I hope, instead, it is inspiring to others. I weighed more when I was a senior in high school. I weighed over 200 lbs after the birth of my third child, at age 29. I've maintained a healthy weight and wear a size 3 for many years now. It is one of the biggest accomplishments of my life.

I have to admit I haven't immediately recognized myself in a photo for years. I also think I look pretty good in the mirror, but can't believe how big I look in a photo. I working on correcting that. Down 23 pounds since last year at this time last year!

I rarely get a photo of myself that I like; and it's not body issues, it's my face. I've never had a photogenic face, to me, it looks long and horse-like in most pictures, and when I smile, it actually looks worse! I've tried getting a good picture, using different lighting, angles, and hair styles, but nothing works for me.

I see myself in pictures and think yikes! I see myself in the mirror and think I am ok. I can't wait until the mirror image and the picture image match.

It's b/c of a photo taken of me over Labor Day weekend that caused me to really take a long hard look at my lifestyle. I didn't think I looked that bad in the mirror, but that picture was eye opening. I can look at that pic and ones that have been taken w/ in the last couple of weeks and see how far I have really come, but I am still not where I want to be. Sometimes you have to give yourself credit for where you are and know that you are working to get where you want.

I cannot 'fake smile' so I'm not usually photogenic for posed shots. If it's a candid shot chances are much better.

sometimes pictures of me are "hey, not too bad for an old woman" and sometimes they are "jeez...am I really that big?"

there is a picture in one of my blogs of a me and 2 friends looking for shells on the beach. I was pretty happy that I didn't look HUGE in that pic - it was taken from the back!

Even if you don't post them....I think taking pictures of yourself as you exercise and lose are a great way to adjust your mental body image. I find it hard to like pictures of myself and yet I always think my friends look great. I think it's that negative self image al lot of carry around...and we internalize our worst critics

I'm sometimes shocked when I see pictures of myself.

Funny - if I look at old pictures, 10 years ago, I'm much more gentle with myself. And I had 20 pound more

It's gotta be a perspective thing, I take selfies to remind myself how good I look now compared to how I use to look, sometimes I don't recognize myself in the pic like the profile pic I'm using now, I can't believe my back looks that good.

Does anyone else feel like they don't look like themself?

I feel so much prettier than I look in photos.

I don't feel like I am 50lbs overweight. I still feel like I am fit and pretty like I was in college, but the pictures (and mirror) say otherwise. I can't wait photos match my self image.
