Are you rowing with good form? Bad form can be pretty dangerous on rowing machines, so you need to make sure you're doing it right. (Having said that, even with poor form I'm not entirely sure how you'd hurt your rib muscles...)

Almost all of the power should come from your legs, with very little from your upper body. Make sure your back is straight at all times and don't lean forwards or back too much.

I adore rowing (outdoor far more than indoor!) and would love a rowing machine! It's an excellent workout, which is a plus, haha.

Thanks everyone. It took a LOT of stretching last night to make the rib cramps go away. Those dang things hurt. The cat and cow positions, and overhead side stretches seemed to help the most. Those and the massage I sweet talked hubby into administering!

Deep sympathies to everyone else who is going through the aches and pains. Slow and easy doesn't always work.

I use Aleve or Tylenol because I'm one of those weird people who get headaches from taking Advil. The first time I took it for a wrist injury, the injury quit hurting almost immediately but I had a headache for the week I took the stuff.

I am definitely taking a few days off from that torture machine. What's scary is it is still at the lowest possible setting ...I may not be "man" enough to ever move it up a notch!

Hope you all had a great day and I'll quit whining now..... :)

Slow & Steady. I usually take a day or two to let my muscles recover/ heal when I've overworked them. It is not a good feeling. Motrin was a big help though. Hope you feel better soon. emoticon

Been there. Almost got stuck on the toilet once because my legs wouldn't cooperate after a hard, new workout.

Hot bath, anti-inflammatory, cat/cow stretch and a tennis or other ball on the knots between the shoulders. A gentle yoga session and heating pad may help as well.

You're using a new set of muscles. Take a rest until you feel better and start again going even slower. Maybe go a week at one time/setting before you increase it.

I find Advil much more effective than Aleve.....have you tried it? In any event, you need to take off a week from the rowing machine to get your ribs better. I would start with the tension on the lowest and work up from there both in time on the rower and tension.

Hope you feel better soon!

But, dear Lord, I hurt!

I received a wonderful gift at Christmas. Just what I wanted. A rowing machine. I work out regularly, I'm in decent shape, can go for an hour on my ski machine....

Got it set up ...did 10 minutes at the lowest setting, every things great.
Waited a day, did 15 minutes at the lowest setting. Still fine
Waited a day,did 15 minutes, still fine.
Caught a head cold, didn't work out for a few days. Two days ago did 15 minutes, every things still okay.

I was slow, I was careful..today I did 20 minutes at the lowest setting and every muscle in my rib cage is cramping! It hurts to breathe! There are not enough ways to stretch....Someone please kill me now.....need more Aleve....Cramping between shoulder blades...Why do I think tomorrow will be worse ...As Charlie Brown says: ARRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!
