I wish we had a tradition and hope someday we will; when I was young my family would have something special; fondu (hot oil and pieces of meat and shrimp) with salad and bread. Then my dad would make grasshoppers-with mint extract and green food color for the us kids. It was the only time of the year we ever used the fondu or the blender in our house. This year we have our sweet 5 month old boy and it's the first year we are just home doing nothing.

My goals are set for 2014 and I am ready to get healthy! I just turned 40, I just had a beautiful baby boy and I want to be a great roll model for him.

Anarie, raisins sound like concentrated luck to me!

Meowzy, I am from Oregon, USA. My mother is from Argentina. My father is an American, but he is more than half Spanish. I've lived and traveled all over Latin America, but I haven't spent much time in Mexico...so I know a few things about Mexican culture, but they don't always make sense!

Lana=borregito...OK, ya entiendo! Wool is slang for money in Mexican Spanish.

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

And yes, AzulVioleta, Hoppin' John is black-eyed peas with rice, almost always with a little ham, salt pork, or bacon. It's a US Southern, especially African-American, tradition to eat pork for luck as well as the peas. It's usually served with turnip or beet greens. Some say the beans represent coins and the greens represent paper money.

My family's only traditions are eating herring (anytime from Christmas to New Year's Day) and ringing bells at midnight. But over the years we've added Hoppin' John or another bean dish (the Southern families we learned this from say that to get the good luck it just has to be in January, not necessarily New Year's Day), one grape with every strike of the clock at midnight, and decorating with tacky gold decorations.

I'm not going to do any of those things this year, though! I work Wednesday, so I probably won't even stay up until midnight, I HATE herring, and I would have to drive 100 miles round-trip to get grapes.

Although.... I do have raisins. D'you s'pose that would work? Or would I get wrinkly, dried-up luck?

I have Chinese friends who break their old dishes and buy new ones for the Chinese New Year. They also give small gifts to everyone who comes to their home.

Our family tradition is to embrace your loved ones at midnight and wish them well. Grandma used to try and make us eat black eyed peas but I never would! Nasty things lol!

Yes I'm in Mexico :) lol and yes, well, we call it "Borreguito de suerte" or "Borreguito de la abundancia" :) we say everything in... diminutive form :P I'm not sure where the tradition comes from... "money" in spanish is "dinero" but another word for it is "lana" which also means wool... so I'm thinking... maybe it has something to do with that :S
:P Why do you know so much? hehe :P where are you from?

My whole family is from Guadalajara :) maybe there's a connection, I don't know... it's weird that different countries have similar traditions. Some of my family also write down their.... bad memories from the year and they burn them :P

I just bought red and yellow (here it's yellow for money) underwear lol now I just have to decide which one I need more emoticon emoticon

Oh neat, I have never heard the one about the sheep. Do you know where the tradition comes from? You are in Mexico, yes? What do you call that--borrego de suerte? ;)

I think that there are lots of cultures where people burn things to get a clean slate at the new year. I lived in Ecuador for many years, and there they build life-sized effigies of the old year (kind of like a giant doll or a scarecrow) and burn them at midnight. Sometimes the anos viejos have the face of a bad politician or an annoying national figure. A friend from Guadalajara, Mexico was telling me that they burn old clothes at the new year...which I thought was especially interesting since getting new clothes is big part of Arab new year's traditions...I wonder if there is a historical connection?

Ohhhh I always thought the grapes were supposed to be 12 resolutions, not wishes lol... oh well...
We do the underwear thing here too, and we also have the tradition of giving uhmm like little sheep... toys? Plushies? to friends, theyr'e supposed to be for good luck with money. Sheep shapped cookies seem to work too :)
Also you're supposed to sweep your whole house righ before midnight to get and keep the bad vibes out of your home. I have never tried that one, though.
I only do the grapes and sheep ones :)...

I will eat 12 grapes at midnight and make a wish on each one. This tradition comes from family members who are from Spain, but I have seen people do this all over Latin America.

Another cultural tradition for me is lucky underwear--gold for good luck with money, red for good luck with love. This is a South American thing.

What do you do/eat/wear for luck?
