Where is your sadness stemming from? Are you more sad about the emotional eating or are you more sad about WHY you are eating?

It does seem overwhelming when you have a lot of weight to lose for example 100 lbs. It is much more manageable to think in terms of losing 1 pound a hundred times. I have moved my supper to a later time to avoid snacking before bed time. I also avoid carbs (breads, potatoes, root vegetables) at night when they are least likely to be burned and save them for breakfast and lunch. I believe changing bad habits is key to long term weight management. emoticon

I have this trouble eating at night time is my worse down fall yesterday wasn't too bad I had an orange and apple with peanut butter but I struggle with it terribly . I have made the choice to start working 3rd shift again so that way I am active and the temptation is less there. I just have to make sure that I am giving myself enough time during the day to get rest as well .

Think positive ,making a difference one day at a time

I don't understand why I can't stop overeating and eating my emotions. I'm on a constant loop of sadness.

emoticon Emotional eating and exercise. Horrible emotional eater, but getting better all the time about analyzing the reason I am heading for the fridge!! :) I love to exercise but am exhausted when I get off work and am busy until late getting a million things done....I know, excuses, excuses...I am currently working on getting up in the morning to work out then.

Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling!

Eating in front of the TV set at night with all the food commercials is my downfall. Now I PVR (Personal Video Recorder) the programs I want to watch and fast forward the commercials. Next I will start doing exercises with stepper and resistance bands. I am a sugaraholic and have to avoid it along with wheat products. Just starting so see how it goes. emoticon

Food is my obstacle - and emotional eating, usually boredom at night. Or, when people bring things to work its like giving myself a break from work and therefore an emotional reward. Need to figure out another kind of break...or at other times to it is kind of a "break" feeling.

I have just completed my first week on Sparkpeople, tracking everything and light consistent exercising. I too am an emotionally eater and this has been a very challenging year, so my emotions are being taxed! Trying to incorporate favorite foods that keep hunger under control and have a tiny amount of hard candy if I get a sweet tooth. First week loss is six pounds.

pain is one obstacle- when i am really in it - i do not want, nor can i - eat. but when it passes my mind runs rampant - 'what can i have, what will i have!?'
emotional upheaval is another obstacle - when things are really rough - i can wretch and dry heaves from my nerves. it takes a few days to calm down - then i may be so messed up that i eat irradically or not at all.
exercise and my body - also obstacles -

positivity and optimism - in short supply - but these are my allies.

My obstacle is when people bring treats to work. I spend the day resisting and I end up feeling deprived so I overeat later or the next day. This is a tricky obstacle for me to overcome.

We always ate popcorn and a cocktail when we watched movies, which is sometimes two nights in a row. It was always airpopped but other snacks would show up. I don't do it anymore. I told my husband I wasn't going to eat after dinner anymore and he has stopped the snacking with movies, too.

There are tips on how to go to a party or family dinner and not over eat. One is only having one drink because alcohol loosens your resolve.

It's hard, very hard, to break this cycle. I have done your cycle for the past two years and once I committed to getting healthier and eating better choices, I have decided that I can break the cycle because I do know the tricks. I do have to recommit every night while I'm eating dinner.

I'm wondering if upping your exercise on the weekends might help. At family dinners or parties, what if you brought a dish or tray of appetizers that you know are healthy so you have something you can enjoy. I've been doing this and it does work for me.

Unless it's a birthday party or wedding. Always have a piece of celebratory cake, even if it's a little one. Life is too short to not celebrate special cake!!

Weekend eating! I do so well during the week. Then comes the weekend with family dinners and get togethers, and appies and wine... Then the circle begins again. Seems like every weekend I gain back all of the weight I lost in the week. I think I will need to stay away from family and friends on the weekends so that I can maintain my lost weight and continue to lose. Not sure what else I can do.

Thanks I appreciate all the tips and I found my self being the human garbage disposal also. All my kids drink are milk and watered down 100% juice. So I don't like those juice boxes much. I will try to do some of those exercises I am not real good with getting / laying on the floor but I will think of something. I really like Leslie's 2 mile brisk walk, more like power walking so better work out soon I hope to get to 4 mile but have to work up to that. But I am not giving up.

Exercise and Emotional Eating are my big two. I work on my feet all day long so I am beyond tired by the time I get home. My feet are very flat so even when I am not working they are very sore. Food temptations used to be big for me, but I learned to give my self a treat now and again and just track it like every thing else so now I don't feel deprived.

Alcohol. It leads to other bad decisions like being too tired to exercise and eating too much junk! I haven't laid off completely, but I have toned it down so that I can focus on exercise and eating.

By the time I get home from work/heavy traffic, exercising is the last thing I want to do. I plan on getting up earlier to workout in the morning and utilize walk breaks. I've been an emotional/compulsive eater since I was 10. Habits are to be broken! emoticon

Hi Brooklyn. With two kids and one that needs to be in right now, you often have seemingly too much to do and it's easy to not even put yourself ON your list.
I used my kids to exercise and there are websites that have them on it. Our favorite was to balance the kid on my feet while I laid on my back and once balanced they would "fly". I held on to their little bodies while they flew to each side.
I used to eat whatever they left on their plates. One day, instead of eating it, I put it all in a container till they went to bed. I was amazed at how much food was in it and the calories I was eating without even noticing it. It was a hard habit to stop, especially since I didn't count it as eating anything and would eat a regular meal too.
Try to only have good, whole foods for your family. Colored, pretend juice from juice boxes aren't healthy, just easy to give to them. So is juice in a sippy cup and you won't be contributing to land fills. Get rid of all the processed, high fructose, artificial flavored foods and candy. Just quietly throw it out and make sure you have other healthy snacks for them, apples with peanut butter, air popped popcorn, carrots, dried bananas, (just watch out for preservatives), almonds. I have lots of ideas for you. I was a stay at home Mom for years and battled my weight.

This has been my major problem for many years. Between my mother in law and my husband, I am often needlessly stressed due to their imagined high drama. I try to ignore them but it doesn't work and my first instinct was to grab some sort of carb or sweet. And then I couldn't stop eating them.
Now I have the courage to tell my husband that it's enough and he needs to stop. I used to try to assuage his problems but there isn't much you can do to stop a "what if" worrier. Now if he doesn't stop, I have actually told him to "shut up". I know that's not nice but I always try every thing else first.
I don't talk to his Mom on the phone every time she calls because she is as she is and we live in the same town.
Now I literally walk outside instead of into the kitchen. I do not go back in until I feel calm and collected. There is always something to do outside physically and it is a good distraction.

I am an emotional eater. I eat when I get bored. If I find things to do with my hands I do worry so much about eating. I enjoy crocheting but lately when I do that my hands fall asleep and start to hurt. I just can't do it as much as I use to.

I am such a bad emotional eater. I have noticed that everytime I stress out, I wander into the kitchen. I sometimes do it so automatically that I cant stop it. What I began to do was to go to the cabinet, get a cup, and get a glass of water from the refrigerator. This is new, and I don't know what made me think to do it, but it is a lifesaver. Drinking the water actually calms me down a little, and by that time I don't feel the urge to eat anymore. I am really excited about it and thought I'd share.

Thinking happy thoughts

My biggest problem is I am a stay at home mom. So I am always around food. My other concern is due to my daughter's low immune system we stay in most of the flu / winter season. It can get very boring and stressful. Then I have back trouble on top of that so exercising is not easy for me. Been power walking 2 miles a day. Just starting again but really need motivation:)

All of the above too. I can usually stay on track 1 day a week then I "forget" or something! A week later, I'm starting over AGAIN. Yuck! I hate it. I would've lost this weight and kept it off years ago. I'm my own worst enemy.

By far my biggest obstacle is exercise. It is in the top 10 of my least favorite things to do. When I joined SPARK this time, again, I immediately purchased the Spark People Activity Tracker, put in the goals I wanted to achieve each day and synced it to my computer. Now, while I still don't like it, I need to see that I reached my daily goal and it forces me to keep going until they are achieved.

It has only been a week but thanks to the SPAT, I am exercising more than I ever did. Do I like it, not so much, but I do it because I am in a challenge with myself to meet or exceed my listed goals. It is working for me so far.

My biggest obstacle is Arthritis, therefore limiting my exercise. If I don't exercise, it hurts, if I do exercise, it hurts. Food would definitely be my other obstacle. I am happy to say I have a handle on emotional eating and eating because I am bored.

It's the exercise. Hate it, don't want to do, don't have time to do it. BUT also know that it is essential. It's hard to do something you absolutely HATE!

Addicted to sugar and have a problem with emotional eating. First thing I do in the presence of stress is reach out to my friends, junk food! I also think I just like the high you get in starting a new diet! You are driven to success and have a new found energy. I cannot count how much money I have spent trying to lose weight-pills promising record weight loss, weight loss clinics, diet books, etc. the difference this time is that I have identified the problems and have come to terms with this is not being a sprint, but a long term journey to healthier living.
