It does seem overwhelming when you have a lot of weight to lose for example 100 lbs. It is much more manageable to think in terms of losing 1 pound a hundred times. I have moved my supper to a later time to avoid snacking before bed time. I also avoid carbs (breads, potatoes, root vegetables) at night when they are least likely to be burned and save them for breakfast and lunch. I believe changing bad habits is key to long term weight management. emoticon

I have this trouble eating at night time is my worse down fall yesterday wasn't too bad I had an orange and apple with peanut butter but I struggle with it terribly . I have made the choice to start working 3rd shift again so that way I am active and the temptation is less there. I just have to make sure that I am giving myself enough time during the day to get rest as well .

Think positive ,making a difference one day at a time

I don't understand why I can't stop overeating and eating my emotions. I'm on a constant loop of sadness.

emoticon Emotional eating and exercise. Horrible emotional eater, but getting better all the time about analyzing the reason I am heading for the fridge!! :) I love to exercise but am exhausted when I get off work and am busy until late getting a million things done....I know, excuses, excuses...I am currently working on getting up in the morning to work out then.

Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling!

Eating in front of the TV set at night with all the food commercials is my downfall. Now I PVR (Personal Video Recorder) the programs I want to watch and fast forward the commercials. Next I will start doing exercises with stepper and resistance bands. I am a sugaraholic and have to avoid it along with wheat products. Just starting so see how it goes. emoticon

Food is my obstacle - and emotional eating, usually boredom at night. Or, when people bring things to work its like giving myself a break from work and therefore an emotional reward. Need to figure out another kind of break...or at other times to it is kind of a "break" feeling.

I have just completed my first week on Sparkpeople, tracking everything and light consistent exercising. I too am an emotionally eater and this has been a very challenging year, so my emotions are being taxed! Trying to incorporate favorite foods that keep hunger under control and have a tiny amount of hard candy if I get a sweet tooth. First week loss is six pounds.

pain is one obstacle- when i am really in it - i do not want, nor can i - eat. but when it passes my mind runs rampant - 'what can i have, what will i have!?'
emotional upheaval is another obstacle - when things are really rough - i can wretch and dry heaves from my nerves. it takes a few days to calm down - then i may be so messed up that i eat irradically or not at all.
exercise and my body - also obstacles -

positivity and optimism - in short supply - but these are my allies.

rage guilt and revenge - the late great nelson mendela said - IT IS LIKING TAKING POISON AND EXPECTING YOUR ENEMY TO SUFFER!!!

My obstacle is when people bring treats to work. I spend the day resisting and I end up feeling deprived so I overeat later or the next day. This is a tricky obstacle for me to overcome.

We always ate popcorn and a cocktail when we watched movies, which is sometimes two nights in a row. It was always airpopped but other snacks would show up. I don't do it anymore. I told my husband I wasn't going to eat after dinner anymore and he has stopped the snacking with movies, too.

There are tips on how to go to a party or family dinner and not over eat. One is only having one drink because alcohol loosens your resolve.

It's hard, very hard, to break this cycle. I have done your cycle for the past two years and once I committed to getting healthier and eating better choices, I have decided that I can break the cycle because I do know the tricks. I do have to recommit every night while I'm eating dinner.

I'm wondering if upping your exercise on the weekends might help. At family dinners or parties, what if you brought a dish or tray of appetizers that you know are healthy so you have something you can enjoy. I've been doing this and it does work for me.

Unless it's a birthday party or wedding. Always have a piece of celebratory cake, even if it's a little one. Life is too short to not celebrate special cake!!

Weekend eating! I do so well during the week. Then comes the weekend with family dinners and get togethers, and appies and wine... Then the circle begins again. Seems like every weekend I gain back all of the weight I lost in the week. I think I will need to stay away from family and friends on the weekends so that I can maintain my lost weight and continue to lose. Not sure what else I can do.

Thanks I appreciate all the tips and I found my self being the human garbage disposal also. All my kids drink are milk and watered down 100% juice. So I don't like those juice boxes much. I will try to do some of those exercises I am not real good with getting / laying on the floor but I will think of something. I really like Leslie's 2 mile brisk walk, more like power walking so better work out soon I hope to get to 4 mile but have to work up to that. But I am not giving up.

Exercise and Emotional Eating are my big two. I work on my feet all day long so I am beyond tired by the time I get home. My feet are very flat so even when I am not working they are very sore. Food temptations used to be big for me, but I learned to give my self a treat now and again and just track it like every thing else so now I don't feel deprived.

Alcohol. It leads to other bad decisions like being too tired to exercise and eating too much junk! I haven't laid off completely, but I have toned it down so that I can focus on exercise and eating.

By the time I get home from work/heavy traffic, exercising is the last thing I want to do. I plan on getting up earlier to workout in the morning and utilize walk breaks. I've been an emotional/compulsive eater since I was 10. Habits are to be broken! emoticon

Hi Brooklyn. With two kids and one that needs to be in right now, you often have seemingly too much to do and it's easy to not even put yourself ON your list.
I used my kids to exercise and there are websites that have them on it. Our favorite was to balance the kid on my feet while I laid on my back and once balanced they would "fly". I held on to their little bodies while they flew to each side.
I used to eat whatever they left on their plates. One day, instead of eating it, I put it all in a container till they went to bed. I was amazed at how much food was in it and the calories I was eating without even noticing it. It was a hard habit to stop, especially since I didn't count it as eating anything and would eat a regular meal too.
Try to only have good, whole foods for your family. Colored, pretend juice from juice boxes aren't healthy, just easy to give to them. So is juice in a sippy cup and you won't be contributing to land fills. Get rid of all the processed, high fructose, artificial flavored foods and candy. Just quietly throw it out and make sure you have other healthy snacks for them, apples with peanut butter, air popped popcorn, carrots, dried bananas, (just watch out for preservatives), almonds. I have lots of ideas for you. I was a stay at home Mom for years and battled my weight.

This has been my major problem for many years. Between my mother in law and my husband, I am often needlessly stressed due to their imagined high drama. I try to ignore them but it doesn't work and my first instinct was to grab some sort of carb or sweet. And then I couldn't stop eating them.
Now I have the courage to tell my husband that it's enough and he needs to stop. I used to try to assuage his problems but there isn't much you can do to stop a "what if" worrier. Now if he doesn't stop, I have actually told him to "shut up". I know that's not nice but I always try every thing else first.
I don't talk to his Mom on the phone every time she calls because she is as she is and we live in the same town.
Now I literally walk outside instead of into the kitchen. I do not go back in until I feel calm and collected. There is always something to do outside physically and it is a good distraction.

I am an emotional eater. I eat when I get bored. If I find things to do with my hands I do worry so much about eating. I enjoy crocheting but lately when I do that my hands fall asleep and start to hurt. I just can't do it as much as I use to.

I am such a bad emotional eater. I have noticed that everytime I stress out, I wander into the kitchen. I sometimes do it so automatically that I cant stop it. What I began to do was to go to the cabinet, get a cup, and get a glass of water from the refrigerator. This is new, and I don't know what made me think to do it, but it is a lifesaver. Drinking the water actually calms me down a little, and by that time I don't feel the urge to eat anymore. I am really excited about it and thought I'd share.

Thinking happy thoughts

My biggest problem is I am a stay at home mom. So I am always around food. My other concern is due to my daughter's low immune system we stay in most of the flu / winter season. It can get very boring and stressful. Then I have back trouble on top of that so exercising is not easy for me. Been power walking 2 miles a day. Just starting again but really need motivation:)

All of the above too. I can usually stay on track 1 day a week then I "forget" or something! A week later, I'm starting over AGAIN. Yuck! I hate it. I would've lost this weight and kept it off years ago. I'm my own worst enemy.

By far my biggest obstacle is exercise. It is in the top 10 of my least favorite things to do. When I joined SPARK this time, again, I immediately purchased the Spark People Activity Tracker, put in the goals I wanted to achieve each day and synced it to my computer. Now, while I still don't like it, I need to see that I reached my daily goal and it forces me to keep going until they are achieved.

It has only been a week but thanks to the SPAT, I am exercising more than I ever did. Do I like it, not so much, but I do it because I am in a challenge with myself to meet or exceed my listed goals. It is working for me so far.

Everything happens for a reason. Let go...Let God. PamB

My biggest obstacle is Arthritis, therefore limiting my exercise. If I don't exercise, it hurts, if I do exercise, it hurts. Food would definitely be my other obstacle. I am happy to say I have a handle on emotional eating and eating because I am bored.

It's the exercise. Hate it, don't want to do, don't have time to do it. BUT also know that it is essential. It's hard to do something you absolutely HATE!

Addicted to sugar and have a problem with emotional eating. First thing I do in the presence of stress is reach out to my friends, junk food! I also think I just like the high you get in starting a new diet! You are driven to success and have a new found energy. I cannot count how much money I have spent trying to lose weight-pills promising record weight loss, weight loss clinics, diet books, etc. the difference this time is that I have identified the problems and have come to terms with this is not being a sprint, but a long term journey to healthier living.

Someone else said its all 3 to varying degrees and I have to agree. I do eat emotionally sometimes, I also eat out of boredom and habit. Exercise in the gym is fine, when I can get there, but I am not an outside person... unless its sunny and nice out... but those days are few now! I am bad at eating out... I love food and though I can eat only a portion and pack the rest for home, I like food that has taste and flavor... too many restaurants cannot do healthy food well.

I sometimes have to avoid going places because I know I will have a hard time resisting. Some social meetings that include lunch are hard...plus they usually are too high priced for the amount I really should eat. Being a vegetarian makes it a bit more difficult too.

One social meeting gives us the choice of fruit or dessert....we don't have a meal, as it is at 3 pm. I always choose fruit.

Stressful marriage, not feeling like I am worth making the effort for, FOOD, depression, chronic pain... the bottom line is, I often don't feel my life will be one bit different whether I weigh 300 or 140, so with that negative mindset I allow myself to fall off the wagon. I guess I am afraid that I could put in the work and still be an utter and complete failure. I don't quite know what to do about that. The root of the problem for me is emotional.

Been so good to read all posts on here I struggle with emotional eating to and it seems to be most of the time lately. But recognising now what makes me start a day of emotional eating has helped me to overcome this on some days I do not beat myself up any more if I do have a bad day I just get straight back the next day after considering what I am doing to myself and keep a spark diary of how I am feeling etc and why. I know it is hard to remain focused at these times. Exercise another obstacle because when you are in an emotional place it is hard to find motivation, but the days I do stick to walking I know I feel better in my self, just need to do it!!!!

Even reading articles and posts are a challenge for me. I just can't imagine begging able to do the exercise videos. For now, my goal is to go for a walk at least 3 times a week. Happily I am being consistent with that goal and actually feel better and enjoy the walks.
Emotional eating derailed me in the past. I gave up when the journey got hard. I am a restarter but under new management this time. I am actively looking for positive inspiration. Whenever I find a good comment I add it to my Spark page. I will make each day of this journey positive and hope to be encouraging to others.

Honestly I struggle with all of them but at different times and with varying frequency. Right now I'm feeling pretty strong and doing well on all three fronts, but it's constantly a work in progress.

I don't know if you call it emotional eating or compulsive eating, but I constantly want to eat whether I'm hungry or not. I know I eat when I get bored, but I find myself thinking about food and what to eat right after I've eaten. I'm glad I found this forum because this has really been bothering me lately. I don't know why I do it. So now,I'm constantly trying to keep myself from eating, drink something instead. Thanks for listening.

Emotional eating and binging are my biggest obstacles. Depression and fibromyalgia pain are runner up. I struggle finding the desire and motivation to exercise the way that I use to.

Food! Also, medications.

I love exercising (most days) and even on days when I don't feel like working out, I usually talk myself into doing it by reminding myself about the benefits. For days when I feel really unable to work out, I make a deal with myself that I have to do just 10 minutes of [exercise/activity]. I promise myself that if after 10 minutes I still really want to quit, I am free to do so!

Thank goodness for the chair exercises on here and Sit and Fit emoticon on PBS everyday! That is how I started and I still do them at least once weekly. I love the arm and shoulder and the core.

My best friend does her exercises in bed at first and her doctor is amazed how good she is doing she started with three of different things she could do in the bed and now does 100 each. leg lifts, arms, core, she take floor exercises and makes them her own. Where there is a will there is a way. emoticon !Good Luck and Keep Sparking! emoticon

What an interesting thread to read through. I'd say my biggest obstacle was money - because I can never keep a good programme going because I can't afford to all the ingredients I need to keep to a good programme - lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds etc. This leads to a feeling of deprivation - and I have to constantly be looking at cheap meal options - which in turn leads to emotional eating! I'm also a bit averse to sweating and getting hot - which puts me off any really serious workouts!

How am I planning to win over it in 2014? The money problem I can't really solve - but I'm going to aim to make more soups and use more beans/lentils. I am also going to give calorie cycling a try - and see if allowing myself more on some days will help me psychologically. With the sweating and exercise, I'm going to wear workout gear and exercise in the morning, so I can shower afterwards and before work. I will exercise outside whenever possible too. I will gradually increase the amount of cardio/aerobic exercise I do.

Emotional eating is one of my downfalls. While I love healthy food and I love to cook, I also wasn't paying attention to my food intake. As for exercise, living up north, winter puts its limits on the kind of exercise I love to do - riding my bike, long walks, working on my house and yard, using the swimming pool - especially this winter so far. I have reconstructed my basement to include a gym area, and that has helped some this winter. I try to use the Spark People exercises to change things up a bit, and that has been helpful.

In preparing for the Olympic games, I am vowing, right this minute to watch the first hour in my gym while exercising. Anyone with me??

Emotional eating tends to be my biggest downfall. Re: exercise, I found that watching a series that I really like on DVDs or whatever and making a rule that I can only watch it while actually exercising, is really helpful. As an aside, telling yourself that you hate exercise, doesn't help you do it. Try changing the wording to yourself, eg exercising is challenging, or I haven't yet found the exercise that is really appealing to me.

Working out is my obstacle. I have a hard time finding the time to do it. I leave for work at 7:30 and get home at 6:30. I'm hungry when I get home so working out just doesn't fit at that time.
I hate getting up and getting on a treadmill or spinning bike at 5 am! Yuck.
I have been able to get a little exercise in at lunch time. This evening or tomorrow evening I want to go ice skating after dinner. I think an hour of ice skating may be a fun way to get some exercise.

On my way today.

Emotional eating was an obstacle in gaining my original weight decades ago and it still rears its ugly head now and then but I do much better with it than I used to. Doubt it'll ever go away and that is fine.

I believe that one valid and traditional use of food is how it impacts the emotions. I think that is just normal for any human being of any weight.

The key for me is to remember there is a valid use of food in emotional life but not to the point it overruns my equally valid reasons to keep a low body weight.

Resolved in 2014 to remain below 120!

It's been me just not working out.... but I'm determined this year to make myself exercise whether I want to or not! This is the PERFECT time of the year for me to get in shape, so when the weather is warm I'll have something to show for it!

In the past it's been just food because I always had active jobs, and I was able to get myself out to walk. Now it's both because I'm having a hard time getting back into exercising. Some days are better then others though as I restart my journey.

It is also important to make sure you have good choices available to you and not to keep your temptations in the house. It is impossible to completely avoid chips or cookies or whatever, but that doesn't mean you need to stock them in your pantry! Home can be a haven.
