I understand what you're saying, however I can point my finger as I believe there is enough evidence. This 2013 study below proves correlation and not causation, however that is good enough for me until dietary sugar is proven not to cause diabetes. Better safe than sorry IMO.

Article - It’s the Sugar, Folks
By MARK BITTMAN

opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/27/i
ts-the-sugar-folks/

"The study controlled for poverty, urbanization, aging, obesity and physical activity. It controlled for other foods and total calories. In short, it controlled for everything controllable, and it satisfied the longstanding “Bradford Hill” criteria for what’s called medical inference of causation by linking dose (the more sugar that’s available, the more occurrences of diabetes); duration (if sugar is available longer, the prevalence of diabetes increases); directionality (not only does diabetes increase with more sugar, it decreases with less sugar); and precedence (diabetics don’t start consuming more sugar; people who consume more sugar are more likely to become diabetics)."

"This is as good (or bad) as it gets, the closest thing to causation and a smoking gun that we will see. (To prove “scientific” causality you’d have to completely control the diets of thousands of people for decades. It’s as technically impossible as “proving” climate change or football-related head injuries or, for that matter, tobacco-caused cancers.) And just as tobacco companies fought, ignored, lied and obfuscated in the ’60s (and, indeed, through the ’90s), the pushers of sugar will do the same now."

High levels of blood glucose cause the side effects of diabetes - such as peripheral neuropathy, kidney problems, etc. But you have to distinguish between that and the intake of dietary sugar.

It has not been proven that eating dietary sugar is what causes diabetes. This is a common misconception.

I'm not saying sugar is great. I'm saying that you can't point the finger at sugar because it hasn't been proven to cause diabetes.

CHEETARA - It is not the only cause. Just like smoking isn't the only cause of lung cancer. It is a MAJOR contributor though.

High blood sugar damages the pancreas, the organ which makes insulin to bring down blood sugar.

I wonder why lowering sugar intake is recommended for pre-diabetics then? I wonder why a low sugar diet is successful in treating and preventing type 2 diabetes?

I'm on dialysis bcoz of SLE. No one knows what actually causes SLE. 90% of SLE sufferers are women of child-bearing age. Only 10% are male. SLE can affect any organ, including the skin.

Guess what 80% of dialysis patients are : diabetics!

Right. None of those links you posted prove that sugar causes diabetes. It's a complex mechanism that hasn't been fully explained by science.

You don't have to eat the whole thing.

CHEETARA79 - "Islet beta-cell failure and the natural history of T2D. T2D develops in response to over nutrition and lack of physical activity in subjects that have underlying genetic and acquired predispositions to both insulin resistance (and/or hyperinsulinemia) and beta-cell dysfunction.

I agree that not every disease is caused by diabetes nor is every form of diabetes caused by diet. There are some very strange forms of diabetes that are rarely see.

Having said that, without any research just a guess based on experience, I would say that 80% of Type 2 Diabetes is caused by lifestyle. Poor diet and a lack of exercise are killing us. Change your diet and start exercising and you can "cure" type 2 Diabetes.

Diabetes kills your organs by damaging the micro vessels. So it slowly kills your kidneys, your heart, your peripheral circulation and your eyes, You get to go blind, have a heart attack and a stroke and live on dialysis. Yeah, lots of fun for everyone.

In the hospital we see people come in for a toe amputation, then 6 months to a year later a foot amputation. Then because those wounds won't heal they amputate below or above the knee. First one side, then the other.

One of the strangest things I read was in a guys chart where the doctor was cleaning a toe wound and the bone fell out. Yes, it fell out. Clink. Onto the tray. Guess what he got amputated a few days later?

All of the shocking movies showing people acting stupidly on drugs hasn't stopped anyone from taking them and using them, either. In fact, groups out there want to legalize every sort of balony that a person chooses to use/take inject, etc. Hasn't stopped anyone. Addiction is addiction. My husband had a liver transplant, due to something he encountered while in the Vietnam war, but became diabetic because the Anti-Rejection med he needs to stay alive, it's main side affect is Insulin dependent diabetes!!!! Same drug a person who receives a kidney transplant has to take for the rest of their lives. Every disease out there is not caused by diabetes, although many would like it to be like that, easier to complain about it.

Plan for tomorrow, but enjoy the heck out of today.

I'm not defending a high-sugar diet. It's not known exactly what causes diabetes type 2 so to blame sugar is misinformation.

DH lost weight - 50# and no more diabetes. However, a friend's daughter only 12 y.o. & thin as a rail has it. She was not a junk food kid either. We were all surprised @ that.

Most people know that diabetes can cause blindness. My great-grandmother had type 1 diabetes, and while she lived a long life, she was blind for the last 40 years of it.

What I didn't realize until recently is the damage that diabetes can do to internal organs. Last spring my father gave my mother a kidney, so I spent several weeks hanging out in the abdominal transplant wing of a major teaching hospital. Guess why most of the people there were in need of new kidneys and livers? Diabetes, mostly Type II. Getting a transplant is a massive and grueling experience that often fails. Even in the best circumstances it is a painful, costly and difficult experience which requires life-long maintenance.

I think the issue with type 2 diabetes is more about unhealthy carbs than strictly sugar. Being overweight, not exercising regularly, AND genetics all play a role. There is a lot of type 2 diabetes on both sides of my family.

All of the folks in my family who have it are/were obese (some have passed away) - except my sister. She's borderline type 2 and maybe 15 or 20 lbs overweight. All of them also have high blood pressure.

When sis exercises, her blood pressure goes back to normal and blood sugar levels stabilize.

Unlike me, my sis doesn't really like healthy foods. I prefer brown rice, whole grain bread and pasta, etc. She has gotten MUCH better than when we were kids. Now if she knows I like something, she will at least try it. Often she likes it.

as far as the disturbing images, I'm not sure how much good they do. Has it really made that many people stop smoking? Or kept them from starting? Most of us live in the "it won't happen to me" world.

You're right KJ. My Dad died from it but he suffered from it a very long time. He became very depressed about what he could no longer do. Yet he would never change his ways, too much alcohol, bad for him foods and no exercise.

This is why I always say that diabetes is the disease no one wants to talk about; it won't kill you today, tomorrow or any time soon, no, it takes it's time slowly shutting down organ by organ and makes one suffer a life time.

If anyone has diabetes you need to kick its ass now! Today as if it were gonna kill you tomorrow!

In Canada cigarettes have warnings on them with pictures of all the horrible things that can happen to you because of smoking. Do you think sugar should be sold with pictures like those in the link as well?
