I would have Christmas dinner with my Mom and friends rather than at my SIL house as she has a problem with the beverage aspect of celebrating.

Depending on the day ...I would like to take my family on a vacation. But can't afford that right now.
I would love to spend the holiday with my extended family but that's not an option this year.

Other days, I would love to stay home, drink cocoa and watch every version of The Christmas Carol ever made.

Given my "d'ruthers", I'd love to go on a vacation at Christmas. We used to do the Xmas-New Year's cruise when I was a kid, and it was great. I'd love to do that again. I'd also love to go to some environment which is atypical or at least unusual for me: like someplace snowy and "white"! There's also a gorgeous place not too far away which does the most amazing holiday lights display... and I'd like to go there while it's actually on, not just setting-up-for (which is how we encountered it before).

Even so, I do love the family gathering. I like the homey Christmas with the real tree fragrance, the comfort of family around us (even if it's just his family, since mine is all gone...), the familiar foods... There used to be a fireplace in the home, since removed... but on those rare occasions when it was actually cold for the holidays, there was nothing to compare to the crackling sparkling fire and the piney smell overlaced with those delectable kitchen aromas: the meat, the cookies...

I guess it's a toss. I want it all! LOL

...the problem with people these days is
they've forgotten we're really just animals ...

I would turn off the TV, ban all electronics and phones, have everyone cook something for a big potluck, and enjoy the company of all those participating without distractions. I would like to start traditions of reading Christmas stories aloud like they use to do in Victorian times and limit gift giving to homemade, thoughtful gifts. I'm tired of all the commercialism and texting and video game playing when we should be enjoying friends and family while they are still here. Pretty boring and simple - something we could do with a lot more of!

Lay aside life-harming heaviness and entertain a cheerful disposition.

If my holidays went the way I wanted, all the decorations and preparations would be done WAY prior to the big days. I'm always scampering around to finish up things and make meals, that by the time the holiday is there, I am usually exhausted and don't enjoy them as much as I would like. This year, I'm am trying to make it all happen while tending to my FIL, who recently broke his hip. Hours of my usual days are now spent driving and visiting him and coordinating his care, plus now taking care of two households. It seems that the holidays are par for undesireable things to happen and pile up.

I had to ask the question, too, about why people don't just do what they want instead of appeasing the family, et al, that we "properly suffer" visiting. I don't think it's because we don't care for the people that we visit, but instead we feel that having to do it takes away from our own time of relaxation on a holiday -- time spent traveling, dressing up, making an effort to talk about subjects that are mundane, feeling lousy after the ridiculously large meal, etc.,. is hard work. Every time I've left those affairs, I've always felt unleashed -- Whoopee! Now I can do what I want.

It seems very hard for others to understand that visiting any other time than on a holiday is OK to do and would serve the same purpose, but in many families, it is just TRADITION that everyone be together and suffer together for those days. No one wants to be on the "naughty" list for not attending family gatherings, and "being sick" only works once, and never twice in a row before others start talking about why you are always sick with something and what could be wrong with you?

Being with your children takes precedence on holidays. It's a tough thing to do, but if you are bound to "suffer" along with the auxiliary family so that you can spend Christmas with your daughters, you'll just have to try and change your attitude to Yes, I love doing this because I am spending time with them and nothing else matters. Maybe in the future you can split the holiday up or make every other year your party. We have a pretty good arrangement at our house. Our parents visit during the day of Christmas Eve and usually want to go home pretty early in the evening. Our daughters and their friends also come during the day, but stay late into the night (Christmas Eve). Christmas day, the kids do their things with SO's family or at their own homes with their respective friends. It works well for everyone. We all get the whole day on Christmas to hang out in our jammies and eat leftovers.

I do feel for you because I spent many years of my life doing what others wanted me to do, and our families were so domineering that I was apparently deemed incompetent to hold gatherings at my house. As my kids grew up, that all changed and little by little I pulled away from that scene. It's difficult to just blow everyone else off, but you have to consider that we only have so much time on earth to live our own lives. Yeah, you'll get scoffed at, but in the end, they will all forgive you (and probably admire your courage too)!

Have a nice Christmas, KJ.

I like things the way they are for the most part. My job shuts down so I get the Christmas through New Years off without touching my vacation (extremely lucky, I know). I go home to my parents' house because they and my sister are basically my only family left. Before I go home, I bake goodies (having taken up the mantle from my grandmother when she couldn't do it anymore before her passing) and take them to work, friends, my former job and home.

I do wish that we had more people as I miss the big get togethers (but not the drama) that we had when I was younger when more of the family was alive or in our lives and would love to host a big shindig for friends/family. My place is too small for more than 4, but if my condo sells and I buy a house (realtor is coming Friday), that may happen next year. :)

I do the holidays my way and I always enjoy it, I really think it's the best time of the year and It's sad to see people stress over it. Things really changed for me when I stopped the madness of gift giving.

I said this in another post, too and I think I'd like to change the way I'd like to do the holidays and that's by invoking D.R.I.P.!!!!!!
No talking about:
D - diets (I visit a friendly website to talk about that stuff, lol)
R - religion (only the browbeating religions that is)
I - illnesses (I don't want to hear about someone's diarrhea incident last week)

I would get rid of the whole gift-giving aspect. I prefer to spend time with the people I care about without all that pressure and hassle.

Also I would make it illegal for any employer to require or even allow any event at work that requires people to bring a "covered dish." If you want to serve food at an event ... cater it. Employees who don't cook and/or don't have the equipment, money, time, skill, etc. to be preparing dishes to serve to co-workers shouldn't be pressured to have to do those things.

I'd make the holidays (not just Christmas & Easter) about Jesus.

I'd invite a few military service members to share a fabulous meal I would cook.

There would be less focus on what gifts everyone is getting and more about the simple joys of hanging out with each other.

SHKIRK I like your idea. I would love to take my whole family to Hawaii. In a well appointed Lear Jet. And stay in an expensive compound.

Since I don't have that kind of money. I guess I will just be happy with the Christmas that we do have.

I love Christmas!

I pretty much celebrate the holidays the way I want to now so it wouldn't be very different.
I spent several years doing things the way other people wanted even though it was not convenient or enjoyable for my dh, dd or myself. We made changes and enjoy our holidays much more.

Honestly, I like things pretty much the way they are. We spend Christmas Day and have dinner at my daughter's and three grandkids. My sister is coming to spend a week with us at Christmas. I am taking her (and me) for manicures and pedicures and her only for Carvel ice cream-she loves it. The only thing I would change is for my son to have the day off as he is working. He did get Thanksgiving off and that was quite nice.

You have my permission to skip the suffering. ;)

I do whatever the heck I want. Most years, I ignore Christmas entirely. This year I feel like having a tree, so a tree I shall have. I will host a dinner around that time--probably there will be seafood involved. I will not see anybody that I do not want to see and I will not do anything that I do not want to do. This is the beauty of being an adult.

I love our Christmas traditions, so there's not much I would change.

I would like a few extra weekends in the Christmas season to spread out the busyness. It's such a whirlwind.

Also I wish my sister's family could be close enough that we could get together. They live in Spain. I haven't seen her in nearly 2 1/2 years.

actually I'd like to vanish for the entire month of Dec.

I don't Christmas shop (haven't in years - except for a few Angel Tree things), so it's easy for me to forget all the madness that goes on.
Saturday I went to TJ Maxx to get a dog bed and to LifeWay to buy some stuff the church needed. Extremely long lines at both places.

glad to say everybody was being pleasant where I was!

I totally agree, Rebcca!

Right now, I don't have the resources to do what I truly want, but second best (Christmas with the family) is a good second best. I'm still working on the transition from child/junior member of the family to independent adult, but once I do holidays will be spent how I (and hopefully my BF) will want to spend them

I spent Thanksgiving with my parents, not what I wanted to do. My siblings haven't come for the holidays in years and it is left to me to do it. This year for the first time I am going away for Christmas. I'm spending it in CA (all the way across the country) to spend Christmas with my Grandkids. They are 3 and 5, the perfect age to enjoy the holiday. I can't wait!

Hmmm..."If you could...?" I think the bigger question is WHY don't you do what you want?

For Thanksgiving my SO does his 'duty' with family at their place and I have created a tradition of going to the zoo with my GF. We always include a ride on the carousel. Each year is unique and wonderous in it's special way.

I am in a chapter of life where I feel I have the right to do what makes me happiest.

Honestly? I would spend the week by myself in a quiet cabin, far from the holiday madness. I know most people love the holidays, but my extended family situation is full of landmines I'd just as soon avoid. My parents and siblings have our holiday gathering the week before the holidays, so I would still be able to do that and then just skip all the other stuff.

how different would it be from what you are currently planning on doing?

For me I would have my Christmas at my house with my two daughters and my girlfriend but alas I have to do a whirlwind of a dance and visit folks I'd rather not visit but "have to".
