This year I cooked Thanksgiving for 4 people and I really got to scale back on the sides! Brined roasted turkey, herb and vegetable stuffing, sour cream mashed potatoes with gravy, roasted acorn squash wedges, cranberry jelly (yes, with the can imprint on it!) and dinner rolls. Dessert was a pumpkin pie from the store! The "must haves" in our house were the Yukon gold potatoes, jelly and pie, and I got to purchase 2 of the 3. I stuck to basics for myself - turkey, squash and stuffing, no dessert. I did have champagne with dinner as my treat!

Love all the traditional foods. I cooked this year so it was a combination of my traditions and my relatively new husband's traditions. It works for us.

Hope everyone has a happy holiday.

Due to dad being in hospital today and mom hanging out there, I visited them for a while but had no Thanksgiving this year. I miss my mom's dressing and sweet potatos !! Love them but only have them on Thanksgiving. Never make them or I'll eat to much so I never fix them. Bummed I didn't get any this year. lol

If you don't love yourself....how can you expect others to.

What Thanksgiving foods do you like? -- emoticon The roast bird (any other meat serving such as ham, chicken, prime rib), mashed potatoes/gravy, rolls, corn, cranberry sauce, pecan and chocolate pie, peach cobbler emoticon

What ones do you hate? -- anything casserole (especially green bean); stuffing; anything pumpkin emoticon

What foods do you have to have because they are part of the tradition? -- roast bird emoticon

Are you making a healthy alternative to a traditional dish? -- It's Thanksgiving, fer gawd's sake! emoticon Actually...I'm only roasting turkey and none of the traditional sides or desserts.

It will be an all-you-can-eat Thanksgiving for me today. By 3 pm I'll be in the Tryptophan Twilight! emoticon

Love Thanksgiving Dinner!

Best - Stuffing with Gravy, Pumpkin Pie

Worst - The turkey (but we need it as a cooking vehicle for the stuffing)

I'm not a big holiday person in general. Holidays were always filled with too much family drama. I don't mind turkey, and my mom's mashed potatoes are to die for, but I'm not having either today. My BF and I are making a pot roast in the crockpot and having mac'n'cheese and roasted Brussels sprouts. Just the 2 of us.

That's why I think it's not a big deal if stores are open on Thanksgiving. Not everyone has a big loving family with whom they want to spend the entire day. I grew up eating holiday meals at noon, so even if stores had been open back then it wouldn't have impacted the day.

I'm not going to be shopping today but I don't think it's a big deal that some people will be.

ARNIE I like the way you say you're cooking things your way when your family comes. For years I endured my Mother's overcooked turkey, rock hard stuffing and loose mashed potatoes. She refused to let anyone help her, heaven forbid if you tried to bring anything, insisted the party be at her house then complained the whole meal about how hard she worked. She finally asked me to take over the cooking but at her house. And I had to cook her recipes. I was thrilled and envisioned my happy day of cooking with the family hanging out in the kitchen and my SIL bringing her special cranberry sauce if she wanted to. Instead I had my Mother hanging over my shoulder questioning everything I was doing. And it happened the next year too. This year I'm going to put my foot down, if she interferes then she will be banished from the kitchen. If that doesn't work then next year she'll get the job back. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Karen

Growing up, I just loved the way my mom made everything Thanksgiving-- the turkey, stuffing, sides, desserts, etc., but she's gone now, and I miss her so much.

These days I have Thanksgiving at my SIL, which is a tradition on DH's side. The rest of his family is there and obviously, he enjoys sharing holidays and enjoying meals with his family. While my SIL is a very good cook.it just isn't the same comfort food that Mom made. On the calorie side, I guess that's fortunate for me, but sort of a let down emotionally. But on the plus side, I love my in-laws so the company makes the difference.

I love the traditional Thanksgiving food my family makes, but mostly because they have memories of family attached to them. I have to rely on my sister-in-law tomorrow to make the food and hopefully there will be many items I can eat.

I do like turkey, although I like turkey sandwiches and casseroles with leftover turkey even more. I live far away from my family, though, so I usually go to some sort of gathering of friends, where everyone brings something from their own tradition. This year I'm having two Thanksgivings. I work in a National Park, so almost everyone is working. One Ranger who gets the day off will roast a turkey and a ham and host a dinner that everyone else joins whenever their shift ends. I'll be one of the later people to arrive, so I'm taking a dessert. (A gingerbread-citrus upside-down cake that I'm making right now.) Usually at that type of gathering there are lots of traditional things and lots of unusual things.

My parents have an RV and spend the winter not too far away from me, so they're going to come on Monday and we'll have a family meal. I bought a turkey on my last grocery shopping trip, and I'll make some sides that are sort of traditional, but made the way *I* want them-- the sweet potatoes will be baked until the natural sugar comes out instead of drenched in butter and brown sugar, for example. The only really unhealthy thing we'll have is pecan pie. When we get together with the extended family there have to be at least three types of pie, so just one is an improvement.

OMG, I'm getting ideas on new things to try ...butter pecan cheesecake sounds heavenly, corn pudding sounds interesting, I'll have to look at some recipes

Waldorf salad sounds good too.

Sorry about your moms hand, sounds like it was really painful.
Our ambrosia is light green, made with pineapple, coconut, walnuts, mini marshmallows and pistachio pudding. My son used to call it toxic waste ...it's still one of his favorite dishes.
I think I'm the only other person who likes it so I wont be making it this year as he won't be here.

no pumpkin pie for us. Mom usually makes a cherry pie for me and a coconut cake for her DH.

She also makes a butter pecan cheesecake that is instant emoticon
so I avoid anything more than a taste (one bite) of the cheesecake

I love it all, too, but skip it as to me the Thanksgiving turkey has to include stuffing and be followed by pumpkin pie and unless I cook it, none of that is going to be gluten free.

So I am staying at home and making salmon.

love mom's cooking! She makes the best dressing (cornbread based - we are southerners!)

our standards - ham, turkey, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes with cheddar cheese, ambrosia, homemade cranberry sauce, stuffed prunes

I don't eat ambrosia anymore because I was with mom the year she sliced her hand open getting the meat out of the coconut. Now when I see that pink liquid in the ambrosia I feel queasy. And mom has used frozen coconut since that incident. That trip to the ER was awful!

any 'first timers' to our holiday meals make a face at the stuffed prunes...until they try them. They are stuffed with cream cheese and have 1/2 of a pecan on top

mom makes extra of the cranberry sauce for me. I love it mixed with Greek yogurt. Sis likes that nasty canned jellied crap, so we have that too.

I love everything Thanksgiving....but since changing my lifestyle, I have developed a fondness for more low cal versions of each dish. I take my sweet potatoes baked without anything, I love my green beans amandine, not in a casserole. I do my stuffing loaded with carrots, celery, and mushrooms, And the turkey is not swimming in gravy.

I am the cook at my parents house. We have to have it there and I have to cook their traditional recipes. They are old and set in their ways so I'm going to live with it and enjoy my day. I usually skip things like cranberry sauce, biscuits (I can have them anytime), salad and stick to my favs, mashed potatoes and gravy, turkey, stuffing and brussell sprouts. I practice portion control and do not have seconds. I finish it off with a small piece of pumpkin cheesecake.

I love every Thanksgiving food! I especially like to make turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce the next day. Potato filling, stuffing... mmmm!

love it! I decide what I love most and eat that. I can do without the mashed potatoes, even though I love them too. My plate will have: turkey, stuffing, squash, cranberry sauce and a little gravy. What I love a lot is the smells ahead of dinner.

I love the sides: corn pudding, mashed potatoes (no gravy) green beans, corn, waldorf salad and of course the rolls!

I am vegetarian so I won't do the turkey or the stuffing (it has turkey pieces in it)

My mom is really good about using vegetable stock in the side dishes so I know those are safe at home

Love it. But use a small plate and fill have with fruits and veggies. No second servings, and 1/2 piece of pumpkin pie. Yum

What Thanksgiving foods do you like?
What ones do you hate?
What foods do you have to have because they are part of the tradition?
Are you making a healthy alternative to a traditional dish?

I love the home made crescent rolls and the pumpkin cheesecake.

I would rather have a nice roast instead of turkey. But I do like all of the dishes I can make with the turkey leftovers.

I do not like boring bread dressing, or the even worse cornbread dressing! And I do not like bland mashed potatoes.I also don't like the mushy green bean casserole.

I make a wonderful sausage, chestnut and fennel dressing. I've been asked to make it on several non Thanksgiving occasions but we have to be traditional on T day! ?!?! Because that's the only kind some people will eat, I was told. Funny the same people gorged themselves on the sausage dressing, LOL!

I also found out that only 2 of 20 people who will be at dinner like the green bean casserole. But we HAVE to HAVE it! I suggested that if they want it they should make it and bring it. Surprisingly, they didn't want it badly enough to make it.

I'm making fresh, steamed green beans with red and yellow peppers with homemade mushroom sauce. Toasted almonds and homemade onion rings on the side to accommodate food allergies. (cooking for someone who is allergic to onions can be tough!)

Leftover mashed potatoes will be turned into yummy twice baked potatoes.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
