I am the cook in the family so I can figure out healthy things to cook and also make sides and desserts for the more picky eaters in the family. My hubby used to be a picky eater but he now will eat anything I cook. I'm REALLY thankful for that this time of year.

I will continue my walking schedule, try and add more time on the WII and continue with my Tuesday and Thursday exercise classes. There will be so many dinner parties, lunches and a few planned breakfast's that it is difficult not to gain but I think I can try and maintain by staying active.

All things are possible if you only believe, even losing 15 pounds

It's usually many dinner meeting, party etc in the end of year and start of next year. Only one thing I need to plan is not to eat too much. I try my best o refuse that eating social activities.

We're having a small family event and I get to plan the menu. So I'm planning mostly foods that are on my plan. Then I'll add the sides that my kids prefer and two desserts. The desserts will be one for them to spoil them and one that I can tweak to fit my plan. Then, when Christmas day is over, I'm not going to nosh on sweets all weekend. I'll pack up the leftover sweets to take to my grandparents when we visit.

I'll keep a menu for the other days too-all planned out, including using leftovers, so we're eating healthy. I am planning activities now that will include plenty of healthy, barely noticeable exercise and some planned physical events.

thankfully christmas in our family is everyone is on your own so i won't be surrounded by lots of family and food particularly my aunt's mac n' cheese. i will pretty much stick to the same routine of working out 5 days and eating cleanly. i refuse to gain weight over the holidays. i thought i would be closer to the 170s by this time but as long as the scale keeps moving down.

I will probably just try my best to go for the fruits and veggies and keep away from the carbs and sweets. Also plan on getting in some exercise! I want to be at 179 by New Years but that might be a bit much. emoticon

I try to take a doggie box on visits and ask for a knife and half the bakllava or whatever goes into the box, then the fridge, and is a treat for when i achieve a low calorie day!

I'm going to join the Y tomorrow so I can add swimming to my workout routine at least 2x a week. I also want to beat the new year's rush of people that will flood in. LOL

I am going to try to take a walk before or after dinner every night.

And finally, I am going to allow myself to indulge in moderation in the things that I crave the most. I am not going to sample every holiday treat just because it is there and available.

My birthday. LOL

I may even have a piece of cake--though a small one... but I don't like ice cream that much...

Now that I think about it, I really don't eat differently during the holidays, very few parties to attend any more (family are far away!...) and though the foods themselves may be different, the nutrition categories and portions are pretty much the same. If I make other choices, I have medical conditions that will remind me very quickly that it's a no-no!

Avoiding pain and illness is a wonderful motivator...LOL

I looked at my calendar and am aghast! This week, I have dinner at a party or restaurant five of the seven days!

I feel like I just recovered from non-stop eating over Thanksgiving when the adult kids were home for the entire week and we had "full" dinners complete with bread/rolls and dessert every night.

I am checking out the restaurant menus ahead of time to plan what I can order and still stay (reasonably) in my calorie range. And I bought a bag of clementines to be my "eat ahead" snack. And I'm planning to avoid alcohol because one drink tends to lead to a second and then all my planning goes out the window.

What usually packs on the pounds for me this time of year is not the holiday meals themselves but:

A. Going off the rails and buying myself extra junk food because "everyone gains weight over the holidays"
B. Giving in to food pushers and taking home lots of leftovers.

For A, I had gotten to the point where the holidays became a weeks long binge starting after Halloween. This year, I started getting back on track with my diet and exercise back in March and after some experimenting I found that eating slightly below SparkPeople's recommended range for carbohydrates effectively kills my appetite, so I've been maintaining that nutrition plan for months and it got me through Thanksgiving without an increase in body fat.

For B., my dad lives nearby and is my biggest food pusher in what is basically a network of food pushers (family, friends, etc). I hated to risk starting a conflict or hurting his feelings, but back in March I finally made it clear I didn't want the junk food he was bringing over. I think the fact that I had maintained self control throughout the year and turned down his food many times finally showed him I was serious. After that I think he got the word out to all the other food pushers in our family circle and by Thanksgiving nobody was pushing me too hard to go back for seconds, or to take home leftovers.

Last year I started to gain at Thanksgiving and did not stop until after New Year's. And then I had to spend the entire spring, summer, and fall losing all that weight.
So this year I'm being smarter and restricting my access to the cakes, candy, and cookies that are my downfall. It's not easy and I've been only partially successful so far and I've had to step up my exercise to try to compensate, but I'm definitely doing a better job than last year. Just remembering how hard I had to work this spring and summer is a good way to keep myself in line....

- I try to focus on the fun, not the food, as best I can.

- I love to bake, both for my family and for friends, but everything pretty much goes into the freezer as soon as it's done, where it 'lives' until I take it out to fix up plates or give away tins.

- I go shopping for a few new sparkly blouses or sweaters that make me feel pretty, and make sure I wear them to the various social events we attend.

- I try to formulate my eating plan ahead of arrival, and always allow calories for a cocktail, which I can drink slowly, and which keeps my hands busy and out of the appetizers.

- I try to incorporate as much outdoor exercise as possible into every day. Today, for example, I'm running a couple my errands on foot, which will take me about an hour longer than if I did them by car.

- I revert to weighing myself a lot more frequently than normal to make sure I'm aware of what occurs if I veer off course.

- And leaving for a warm weather vacation, as we are shortly, helps too! emoticon

Like so many others try to keep my habits normal. Drink plenty of water. Fill my plate half with salad and low cal dressing. DO MY EXERCISE, at least 4 times a week. Keep my weight steady over the holidays so I don't have to start losing what I put on.

I'm trying to create healthier habits so my plan is to not treat Christmas like an all you can eat buffet. I'll fix a plate with reasonable serving sizes of my favorite dishes and split a piece of pie with my goddaughter. I'm avoiding all of the extra food and goodies in my office like they're tainted with toxic chemicals!

I have an injury and can't do my usual exercise for a while. And I will be with family and friends for ten days, away from my usual routine. My usual routine is a lot of whole foods, veggies, etc. Vacation food where they live is a lot of pizza, hot dogs, burgers, and not much in the way of salad. But I will do my best to get veggies along with some pizza.

I have also just decided to make a plan. I will try for an extra ten minutes of exercise a day from now through New Year's, including while with the friends and family.

I am keeping up with my exercising. This helps me make better food choices overall. Yes, I have had some pie and desserts and extra helpings, but I so don't enjoy feeling like a stuffed sausage that I've actually eaten a lot less than I thought I would -- and I have been fine with that. Not feeling deprived at all.

I made such lofty plans to eat perfectly, and exercise vigorously every day, but I couldn't keep that up. The good news is, I have been eating better, and I've exercised at least five times now so, not so bad.

I try to focus on the social aspects of the holidays instead of the food. I look forward to seeing family that lives far away and attending holiday parties. It may be somewhat superficial, but thinking about dressing up and looking nice for holiday events helps to keep me motivated. I find that it is a nice reward to see relatives that I don't see very often or walk into a party feeling confident and beautiful thanks to all my hard work eating right and exercising. Otherwise, I try to come up with healthier versions of a few of my favorite holiday foods to indulge in only once.

Keep up with my usual SparkPeople program except for actual days of holidays (C'mas, New Year's Day). Try not to be ridiculous at those meals. If I do eat something ridiculous, try to keep the portion small. It worked pretty well for Thanksgiving - small portions of numerous items and I ended up having a cranberry gelatin salad for dessert. Not sure if I should allow candy in the house, though. This is my first Christmas on SparkPeople and I have always gotten a bag of chocolate candy that disappears far too fast. I think I could probably eat it in reasonable portions now, but will it be too tempting to be pleasurable?

Since I'm just now getting it all together, my plan is that I'll be staying within my calorie range every day except for Christmas Day itself. I'm not sure about New Year's Eve or Day since my plans are still up in the air. I'm happy that I did not gain any weight over Thanksgiving. Didn't lose any either.....

Enjoy the holidays, but remember that they are each only a day. I ate a lot at Thanksgiving, but am back on my plan again until Christmas eve. I can generally avoid over-indulging at parties, because I bring something healthy to share and avoid the cheese and desserts.

I'm not willing to give up the special celebratory foods that remind me of my childhood and are an integral part of Christmas. I would rather indulge moderately than deny myself. Having a holiday meal is not a problem; having a holiday month is.

I will think with paper and pencil (or iPhone) and make a list of foods that I can feel healthy about eating. I will decide on a few recipes from sparkpeople. Once I'm in the store I will pass up all sweets and buy lots of vegetables! I will move daily by walking and doing strength exercises several times a week. I will use sparkpeople for encouragement and motivation. I will eat sensibly during the holidays not stuffing my face like I have done in the past. This is my " plan." If I fall off, I get back on!

Stick to my regimen of exercising 4 to 5 days a week. I will be at my parents' house for Christmas so I will be mindful of what I eat.

I am motivated more than ever after buying a new Polar heart rate monitor and seeing the results are 50% better than using my old one after I had the battery replaced.

First, my gym is offering free trial HIIT classes in December. If enough people show up they will add it to the Basic Training (aka free classes) schedule. There are 4 or 5 that I can go to.

Second, even though around Christmas/New Year the group fitness classes will be on holiday break, they are hoping to have four or five spinning classes, again if enough people show interest in attending them. I saw the sign ups on Friday and it looks promising! So I will be doing those as well.

Other than that I will try to stick to my usual routine as much as possible.

My goal is to lose 5 lbs between now and New Years. The holidays don't scare me nearly as much as finals do (and those are spread over a longer period of time emoticon ) I know I am a stress eater so if I'm not careful finals can become a feeding frenzy. My plan of attack is to do more of my own cooking (my roommate generally does the cooking), track much more consistently, and try so hard not to snack at night.

Over the break I intend to do all of that plus spend much more time at the gym running and lifting weights.

The minefields of life never go away, we just get better at navigating them.

The only place success comes before work is the dictionary.

I'll be tracking every calorie EXCEPT for Christmas and New Year's. Using this strategy, I doubt I'll gain any weight. It's worked beautifully in the past.

Working six days a week, sometimes seven. I signed up for two 5-Ks to make sure I stayed focused on running 3x a week. The first is tomorrow, and the next is four days before Christmas.

Eat to fuel your body, instead of working out to offset calorie consumption.

Courage comes from the Old French for "heart". To be courageous literally means to do something heart-felt.

We have just celebrated the feast of Ashura, when we get treated with a version of Noahs pudding, but its not a very calorific time. More challenging is the time between Christmas and new year. My policy then is to aim to weigh the same at the end of january as i did before christmas. last year i actually weighed less!

My plan is to continue to work hard. I'm going to keep up with my workouts. If I have any holiday parties to attend to, I'm going to run an extra mile that day so I won't feel guilty about any extra calories. I'm going to work hard so I can earn those extra goodies. And hopefully I will be able to come as close as I can to losing the last ten pounds of my first big weight loss goal.
